Is Music Changing After One Woman?
The word power has many meanings. Many people know what it when they see it, but it is still so hard to define. Onika Tanya Maraj better known as Nicki Minaj has plenty of social power. She was born in Trinidad and Tobago but at the age of five, she moved to Jamaica Queens, New York. Her dreams were to become an actress but she later found her love in rapping. Nicki Minaj took on back up singing roles for local New York City rappers. Soon, she began to write her own material and got in her own group. She was eventually discovered by the Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who came across Minaj's MySpace page, loved what he heard, and signed her to his label. That connection led Minaj to Lil Wayne, who collaborated with her on a series of mixtapes, the first of which, Playtime Is Over, was released in April 2007. This and subsequent mixtapes, including Sucka Free (2008) and Beam Me Up Scotty (2009), showcased Minaj's female swagger and out-front style. She signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label in August 2009, becoming its first ever female artist. During 2009-2015 Nicki Minaj was the only rap artist out. She was the only female in a male dominated area. Artist like Cardi B and fans like myself all look up to Nicki Minaj. Cardi B is a new female rapper that follows the trend of Nicki Minaj by enhancing her breast and buttocks. Cardi B raps about similar topics that Nicki Minaj use to rap about. They both wear outfits that show off their body. Nicki Minaj has also influenced fans like myself by dressing like her or making sure we know every word to all her songs.
