4. Summary
Packed into cattle wagons, the Jews suffer by nearly unbearable conditions. There is almost no air to breathe nor any space, there’s the heat, hunger, and thirst. Soon, the Jews begin to lose their sense of public decorum. Some men and women begin to engage in an openly on the train, and others try to pretend as if they do not notice. After several days of traveling in the inhuman conditions, the train arrives at the Czechoslovakian border. This is the point when they realize that they are not just being moved to a new place. A German officer announces that he takes official charge of the car, and threatens to shoot any Jew who refuses to hand in his or her valuables and everybody in the car if anybody escapes. The doors to the cars are then nailed shut. There is Madame Schächter, a middle-aged woman with her ten-year-old son. On the third night in the car, she begins to scream that she sees a fire in the darkness outside the car. Although there is no actual fire, the Jew are frightened by Madame Schächter for they do not know what might be ahead. But the fear is stirred away by the fact Madame Schächter is crazy. She continuously screams about an inexistent fire, and gets tied up and gagged so that she cannot scream. Later, Madame Schächter
