...SQL Server and fragmentation Just wanted to share a quick tip on querying on sql server fragmentation and fixing things if needed. On our production server, which was setup by our sysadmin with all defaults as per configuration. I was also told that there is a weekly job setup for rebuilding indexes if there is a fragmentation. I did accepted everything told at a face value. But now its time for some treasure hunting. I had to do some sql BOL searching as it was not clear to me how/where I could find such stats. Finally came across sys.db_dm_index_physical_stats function which needs several arguments and based on it it will return details about an object's fragmentation. Lets look at this function first. sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats ( DB_ID, OBJECT_ID, INDEX_ID, PARTITION_NO, MODE); Here db_id, and object_id can take [ null | 0 | default ] as a value and all mean same. To narrow down the results, you need to supply actual value. Index_id could be [ null | -1 | default ], and all mean same, alternatively you can provide 0 if object is a heap, or actual id of an index if object is an index. Partition_no is the partition id of index or heap. Alternatively it can be one of [ null | 0 | default ] as a value and all mean same. Mode is a scan level used to gather the information. It can be any of [ default | null | limited | sampled | detailed ], where default (null ) is limited. So to begin with I took one of our biggest table and made the query...

...As peculiar as Ophelia’s death was, the deaths of Hamlet, Laertes, and Claudius are quite similar. Ophelia drowns in the river as the water fills her lungs. Laertes stabs Hamlet with his poisonous sword but at the same time stabs himself. Hamlet then takes the poison and has Claudius chug it. Each of these characters either succumbs to the poison or the damage done by the sword. The poison represents corruption and the lack of rational thinking they posses. As the water fills Ophelia, the poison fills these men and kills them. This relates to when the gravedigger says, “Here lies the water; good: here stands the man; good; if the man go to this water, and drown himself, it is, will he, nill he, he goes,--mark you that; but if the water come to him and drown him, he drowns not himself: argal, he that is not guilty of his own death shortens not his own life” because the water represents madness and they brought it upon themselves. Therefore, they are responsible for their deaths. However, Ophelia’s father, Hamlet’s rejection, and everyone telling her what to do pushed Ophelia to this madness, thus justifying that she is not at...

...Shortfall Distribution of Dividends According to section 24 of ITA a company is required to distribute a certain fixed proportion of its profit as dividend to shareholders. This dividend is taxable on the shareholders. If a company does not distribute the dividend then the govt. looses on the tax which would have been paid on such dividend. To avoid this al companies are required to distribute adequately their profit their profit within 12 months of the end of accounting year. This shows that there is double taxation of profit in Kenya, first at the corporate flat rate and then on the hands of the taxpayer. The ITA empowers the commissioner to determine the amount of distribution that could be made without prejudice to the requirements of the company’s financial needs. A shortfall is the difference between the amount of dividend determined by the commissioner and the actual distribution by the company. The commissioner expects the company to distribute the following amounts as dividend to the shareholders: A.40% of the net adjusted trading profit after tax B.100% of non trading income such as interest, dividend etc. Companies excluded from shortfall regulation: Companies that are subsidiaries of others. Companies that are subsidiaries of foreign companies and have no resident shareholders Companies with 51% or more shares held by non residents Shortfall is deemed to have been distributed and hence been a part of the income of the shareholders...

...Lyndsey Kessler English 4A 24th Nov. 2014 Mrs. Nills Biomedical Technology: Today’s Experiments Tomorrow’s Medicine I am sure you have heard of mammograms and MRIs, but did you know that they are a part of biomedical technology? Biomedical technology is any medical imaging device or a medical practice that involves biology or technology. Some people do not believe in biomedical technology because they say it had not been proven safe or effective, but it has already saved lives. This is why biomedical technology should be used in medical practices My first reason is that biomedical technology could help save many lives. This technology has the potential to cure many diseases, one example is that scientists have found that stem cells can become a wide variety of specialized cells, this could help cure Alzheimer’s. They also have the potential to help people that are paralyzed. Biomedical technology has already found ways to detect and cure many life threatening diseases. With mammograms and MRIs doctors can detect breast cancer along with other diseases much faster than they have been able to in the past. This could potentially help cure those who are diagnosed. My second reason is that biomedical technology can increase treatment options. Since mammograms and MRIs help detect diseases sooner there are many different ways to treat these diseases some of which may not be as severe. For example instead of doing radiation for cancer right away you could undergo surgery to...
