No child left behind is a federal legislation put into effect by President George W. Bush. This plan is messed up, the funding stinks, it is not developmentally appropriate, and it leaves many children behind. Our schools are made to teach to the test making the students as well as the teachers frustrated. Students that are in poverty, minorities, children with special needs, and those that are merely learning English are being put at a major disadvantage. Testing has gone on for years. It started during World War I when the army was testing the recruits to see what kind of job was suitable for each soldier. It worked well for the army, so the government decided to use it to test students in school. Politicians have been trying to raise standards since 1983. Now, students are tested every year for promotion and retention and even have to pass a certain test to graduate. In the event that the students do poorly on these tests, the teacher’s salary is at stake as well as school funding. Teaching to the test hurts the students as well as the teacher. The students fear failing the test, which causes anxiety and the teacher is no longer teaching higher order thinking. This leaves the teachers very frustrated and may even leave the teacher to decide to leave the profession because of de-professionalization due to the teacher no longer having any decisions to make regarding teaching their class. After many years of testing, state officials are finally realizing that high stakes testing is not the answer. They are now talking about creating accountability that actually has research that backs it up. Future accountability should not come from high stakes testing, but from the schools actually being monitored. That’s some concept. The monitoring should start at the school doing a self - evaluation followed by a school site visit, then by being given an improvement

This law affects how students learn, the tests they take, and the way teachers are trained. It’s stated goal is to close the achievement gap between minority and non-minority students, between the disadvantaged and the advantaged, and between those living in poverty and those that are wealthy. After given a standardized test every year, the school is required to take different actions if their school does not improve each year such as directing a chunk of it’s funding to teacher development, giving students the option to transfer, changing it’s curriculum, or having the school shut down altogether. My claim is that we should adjust or amend the No Child Left Behind Act. No Child Left Behind’s attempt to narrow achievement gaps by ensuring that all children receive a quality education is admirable, but it is hardly realistic. Teachers would have to devote their entire time to teaching specifically just math and English. By doing that they block out any other subjects such as science, history, art, or any other important elective or subject. We should adjust the law by having less harsh punishments that way the students and teachers are not constantly stressing, and most importantly because we want to keep the students from doubting themselves academically.
