No Child Left Behind created a strict emphasis on standardized testing. Many advocates of this policy argue that standardized testing increases student performance and accountability in public education. Standardized testing creates testing anxiety for the student and the teacher, that hinders performance. Standardized testing under the original policy only mandated for reading and math assessments. Reading and math standardized test dismantle education holistically. Teachers of other subject begin to decline in importance and don’t receive the same amount of classroom resources as reading and math teachers. “This emphasis would result in increased educational focus on the subjects of reading and mathematics, while taking away instructional time from subjects not covered by the law” (National Education Association, 2010). 44% of public schools have decreased the amount of time spent on science, social studies, and arts by about 145 minutes per week to focus on law mandated tests (National Education Association, 2010). For over 10 years, our public schools have been dismantled and more students receive education that satisfies benchmarks and less rounded students are produced because of this. There are countless reasons why this act should be terminated. No Child Left Behind gave too much control over public education to the federal government. Due to locality and higher knowledge, states should have the authority to guide policies that improve the quality of education for public schools. States know best for themselves. Accountability and student success can be achieved when states are given funding and opportunity to create education reforms that
