No School In August
It seems like summer fun is a thing of the past. School ends in May and begins in early August. Instead of getting that last vacation, we are scurrying around buying school supplies. What happened to going back to school after Labor Day? There are many disadvantages in going back to school in August. I am going to point out a few of them.
The most obvious is the missed vacation in August. Everyone knows that it has always been the month for the last summer vacation. I would think that tourism suffers, when the summer break is abruptly ended. Local pools sit unused for an entire month. Theme parks only see visitors on the weekend. The bottom line is that money is lost due to going back so early.
August is just too hot, for school. I am sure the kids would agree that going back to school in August, the hottest month, is miserable. Who wants to go back to school in temperatures over 90 degrees? Everyday tasks of walking to and from the bus stop become a journey thru the desert. Yet, there is no oasis to be found. Besides that, who can pay attention in class? The summer is at its peak. There are too many places yet to go. The sound of the ocean waves call your name. The screams of the rollercoaster racing along the tracks echo in your head. There is too much fun to be had. I am sure there is a lot of daydreaming going on.
Another issue is safety. There are many extra-curricular outdoor activities. Many student athletes suffer from heat exhaustion every year. And unfortunately, there have been some fatalities. Kids can’t adapt to temperatures as well. They don’t know the signs of heat related illnesses. They don’t know the signs of dehydration. It is hard to focus on any sport, when beads of sweat are running off of your forehead. How can you catch a football, when your hands are clammy?
Another point to consider is the cost to the school system. Hot temperatures require non-stop use of the air conditioning systems, both in the classroom and on the buses. It isn’t an option when it is hot outside. There is nothing worse than sitting on hot leather seats. Sounds like a 1st degree burn. The cost of maintaining and replacing non-functioning units is expensive. This sounds like a burden on a school system that always needs money. I am sure these funds could be put to better use. How about making sure everyone has textbooks to use? Why not make sure every school is equipped with enough computers? Where are the rational decision makers?
I am sure you can tell that I am not an advocate for kids going back to school in August. Besides my personal opinions, there are many true facts that support my position. Let's bring back the “good ole’days”, when kids can enjoy the hottest month swimming, having fun on vacation, and keeping cool.

In the novel August was at his fifth grade graduation, and they were receiving their rewards. Mr. Tushman the principal got to the last reward ,and describes its importance and why it is a great reward. It showed kindness, character, friendship, and courage. Augustus had no intent or did he expect to win, but Mr.Tushman then said “will August come up here to receive this award”. August was in shock while the entire school began to cheer. Earlier at Via’s play August said “everyone deserves a standing ovation at least once in their lives.” This was big because he had his ups and downs , but in the end he made good friends, learned a lot about...

Mr Tushman Character Analysis

...commencement address, these children are in transition. Within this important shift, they are coming across somewhat-dicey topics for the first time. This is a huge phase for our kids and an extensive portion is spent at school. Having someone like Tushman as a role model comforts me that my child will continue to practice his morals and well-rounded standards at school. Tushman creates a safe environment where children can create bonds over the supervision of an astounding leader. He is so deeply enthusiastic with expanding the moral imagination of each child and developing character. I trust Mr. Tushman and the extent of his power to do what is best for our students. So why exactly are we all here today? To review Mr. Tushman upon his approach to integrating August Pullman into the community. August...

Awareness to the New Academic Calendar

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND Introduction The government might have realized that necessary steps must be taken in order to improve the education system in the country, leading them to make and consider some changes to keep up with the other countries. First, there was that bold move of implementing the K to 12 program where basic education will last for 12 years instead of the traditional 10 years. And maybe also because of climate change, just recently, there were reports about Malacañang being open to studying proposals to change the school calendar. However, the Congress still has the final say on the matter. This means that the academic calendar would run from August to May or September to June instead of June to March. This was intended to avoid the suspension of class because of typhoons just like last year, about 25 typhoons, including the Nov. 9 super typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines and also to copy the academic calendar of most countries in order to attract foreign students to study in the Philippines and assist the enrollment abroad of Filipino students and teachers. This will also allow Philippines a greater synchronization with the ASEAN, Northeast Asian and American and European universities since a lot of training programs and activities of summer institutes happen in June and July in which, in the proposed academic calendar, these months don’t have classes. At present, five universities named University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila...

Wonder By R J Palacio Essay

...difference. August had to get over what others thought of his face and learn how to survive at a school for the first time. The book sets up the reader with a theme that no matter how you look on the outside be courageous and not give up, the plot has the reader asking what will happen next and the characters represented in Wonder helps create a great literary work. The book has a theme that no matter how you look on the outside be courageous and never give up. I got this from the story because August went through many trials due to his face, but never gave up and made it through fifth grade. When August heard the Jack and the other boys making fun of him on Halloween, he could have told his parents he wanted to be homeschooled again. Instead he showed courage and went to school every day. It did not even stop him from trying to be friends with Summer in the fear that she was faking their friendship, too. When the 7th graders on the field trip started to bully August, he could of gave...

Final Proposal: Pro School Uniforms

... Executive Summary For my project I would like to have school boards change their dress code policy to a set uniform. I believe each year students dress more inappropriately to school, and do not follow their set dress code. With schools having set uniforms, bulling would decrease, and it is said that academics rise, violence reduces, it is a money saver for parents, and better prepares the student for the work force in the future. Also when a school has a uniform it helps the community look more appealing to those looking to buy a home there. Problem Statement Uniforms should be set in schools starting from kindergarten and go until the twelfth grade. Each year students break dress code, but it seems to be getting out of control. Students are dressing inappropriately for school and causing unnecessary attention to themselves, in the wrong way. This problem begins in the beginning of the school year and continues on until the end of the school year. With a set uniform it will not only affect the students, but it will affect the schools as well. Set uniforms will help the schools, because it will be one less worry the school has to think about. Uniforms will affect the students by preparing them for the future when you have a set uniform to wear to your job. Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to solve the issue of student’s not following dress code, and the student dressing inappropriately for school. With this being said, I would like to enforce uniforms to...
