...Chapter 35 The Fiesta By seven in the evening, guests have begun to arrive. Arriving first were the petty government officials and clerks. Within a while, Juanito Pelaez and Paulita Gomez have also arrived escorted by Dona Victorina. Basilio stood before the house observing the people going in the house. He then noticed Simoun alighted with the lamp in his hand. He knew that the lamp is a bomb that will blow up the whole house along with the people in it. Fearing for his safety, he walked away. But as he was doing so, he noticed Isagani and also urged him to leave. He refused explaining that this would be the last night he’ll see Paulita as a single woman. Basilio explained to him that the place is mined and that the lamp is set to blow up anytime soon. Realizing that Paulita will likely be killed from the explosion, he immediately ran into the house. Inside the house, a note was passed around containing the words Mene, Tekel, Phares and signed Crisostomo Ibarra. Since only Father Salvi knew who he was and verified that the handwriting is his, he tremebled with fear over the idea that he is going to kill all of them. Noticing that the light is fading away, the Captain-General asked Father Irene to turn up the wick. Just then Isagani barged into the room, grabbed the lamp and jumped into the river. All the while, the servants thought it was a thief. Chapter 36 Ben-Zayb’s Allicitions Ben Zayb immediately went home to write about the incident that happened at the wedding...

Noli Me Tángere Term Paper

...José Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and medical doctor, conceived the idea of writing a novel that would expose the ills of Philippine society after reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. He preferred that the prospective novel express the way Filipino culture was backward, anti-progress, anti-intellectual, and not conducive to the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. He was then a student of medicine in the Universidad Central de Madrid. In a reunion of Filipinos at the house of his friend Pedro A. Paterno in Madrid on 2 January 1884, Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines written by a group of Filipinos. His proposal was unanimously approved by the Filipinos present at the party, among whom were Pedro, Maximino and Antonio Paterno, Graciano López Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente and Valentin Ventura. However, this project did not materialize. The people who agreed to help Rizal with the novel did not write anything. Initially, the novel was planned to cover and describe all phases of Filipino life, but almost everybody wanted to write about women. Rizal even saw his companions spend more time gambling and flirting with Spanish women. Because of this, he pulled out of the plan of co-writing with others and decided to draft the novel alone. Plot Having completed his studies in Europe, young Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin comes back to the Philippines after a 7-year absence. In his honor, Don Santiago delos Santos...

...Noli Me Tangere (novel) Noli me Tangere Image:Original cover, Noli me Tanger.jpg original cover Author Jose Rizal Country Philippines (first printing in Berlin) Language Spanish Genre(s) novel Publisher Publication date 1887 Media type Print Followed by El filibusterismo Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not as the alternative English title) is a Spanish-language novel written by José Rizal and published in 1887 in Berlin. The novel is commonly referred to by its shortened name Noli; the English translation was originally titled The Social Cancer, although recent publications have retained the original Latin. The literal translation is touch me not. Rizal derived these words from the Bible, specifically the Gospel of St. John 20:13-17, which describes how lepers were made to wear signs bearing these words to warn passers-by of their condition. "Touch me not" were also the warning words spoken by Jesus to Mary Magdalene when he rose from the dead. In the Gospel of John, Jesus said this because he has not accomplished his mission (after rising from the dead, he must ascend to heaven to see God the Father) and hence, cannot be touched. French writer D. Blumenstihl says that "Noli me tangere" is in fact the professional nickname used by ophthalmologists (such as Rizal himself) for cancer of the eyelids. Swot Analysis: Rizal Law

... We can also remember how he pursued his studies until he was able to travel to different places and encountered different challenges. We can’t as well forget his two of his great works Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. And the event on how he died in Luneta is still in our memories as we observe Rizal Day on December 30 yearly. We Filipinos are until today educated about Dr. Rizal. One can possibly wonder why we are studying our national hero as a subject itself. It is simply because Rizal Course is mandated by law under Republic Act 1425 or known as Rizal Law. Many may not be familiar with this law. This act was before Senate Bill No. 438 written and sponsored by former Senator Claro M. Recto and then written by former Senator Jose P. Laurel as R.A. 1425. On the 12th day of June 1956, the bill was enacted. Rizal law is made up of six sections that can be conceptualized in the law’s three major provisions. First, it directs educational agencies to include in the curricula of all schools, colleges and universities, public or private, the study of the life of our national hero, with emphasis on the original or unexpurgated versions of the Noli and El Fili. Second, it obliges all the libraries of all schools, colleges and universities to maintain an adequate number of copies of Noli and El Fili in their collections. Third, it directs the Board of National Education to take charge of the translation, reproduction and distribution of printed...

...Ethics related to Sociology Introduction Living in this world without any companion is like a world without color. It is like you have drowned from the deepest part of darkness. As the saying “No man is an island”, it is proven that a person can’t live within itself. You must have friends and socialize with them in order for you to make a wonderful living. Having interaction with other people—sharing some beliefs and practices may consider as part of sociology. Sociology itself means “the study of society”, where it came from the Greek word “socio” means “society” and “-logos” mean “the study of”. Sociology is the scientific study of society, of the ways of which society is organized and operates, and of the factors contributing to both societal stability and social change. It is concerned with patterned social regularities rather than with unique personal experiences. Simply means that sociology is the study of the things around the society. Studying the society also involves ethical values where people will be taught how to live doing the right thing over the wrong one. Though people have their own ways of living, each of us may consider that ethics is very important in everyone’s life. Based on Emerita S. Quito, the author of the book “Fundamentals of Ethics”, ethics is from the Greek word “ethos” meaning a characteristic way of doing things, or a body of customs. In general, ethics is meant to be applied in order to teach the people how to live essentially doing the...

...Bais, A (2012) The Noli Me Tángere Catalyst of Revolution 1. Summarize the author's ideas in your own words. There are several points that the author mentioned in this article. However, he focused on the idea of Rizal using his writings especially the Noli Me Tangere as a catalyst of revolution. He stated there that Rizal intentionally used his writings to fight against the Spaniards and he did not want to take the power of Spaniards over us, instead he wanted us to be assimilated with Spain. It was also mentioned by the author that Rizal would rather use pen and a paper because he didn’t want useless bloodshed. He believe that Filipinos are not prepared for the revolution. 2. Do you agree with the idea that he wants to convey or not? Why? Yes, maybe Rizal intentionally wrote his articles to ignite the emotions of his readers and show their nationalism through a revolution. There are several events in the novel Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo that reflect the kind of oppression that Filipino experienced from the Spaniards. These written proofs are enough to ignited the urge of Filipinos to fight for their own rights. 3. Based on this writing, what kind of 'Rizal' does the author want to portray to us? Rizal as a reformist. He was able to fight for what he believes in without using any force. However, I would say that he can also be considered as a revolutionalist because his writings were one of the reasons why Filipinos fight against Spaniards. We know Rizal as an educated...

Noli Me Tangere Insights

...Noli Me Tangere Conclusion Noli Me Tangere was the most controversial novel of Rizal aside from the predicaments he encountered just to publish this novel. It aims to promote awareness and to free Filipino people using diplomatic means. Rizal aimed to redeem the country and its people by exposing the barbarity, greed, cruelty and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers. Noli Me Tangere portrays the different aspects of gaining independence. Jose Rizal focuses in social climbers, abusive power, family devotion, self-sacrifice, purity and faithfulness. Having been colonized by the Spaniards since 1500s, the author depicts the Filipinos suffering abuse from civil guards, friars and other government officials. Using their power to mistreat civilians, the civil guards harass them because of simple causes, such as not rendering the customary salute, etc. The same goes with friars who commercialize religion through simony and plenary indulgence. Government officials likewise make use of their power to control those whom they believe would be detrimental to the Spanish rule. Just as Crisostomo Ibarra, the main character in the novel, experiences this through the death of his father, this theme in “Noli Me Tangere” comes to life. Another very evident theme in the novel turns out to be patriotism. Portrayed by Ibarra and Elias, these two men earnestly desire for independence from the oppressors. Although different in their means of seeking reform, they both press their goals. Believing that...

As of 2003, it was recorded that 4 out of 25 marriages in the Philippines end up in Legal Separation. Other couples decide not to legalize their separation simply because they cannot afford it. This is one of the many reasons why many politicians are pro divorce. Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by court or other competent bodies (Oxford, nd.). It is way cheaper than annulment and legal separation. Philippines is the only country in the world that does not allow...

Spaniards abused the weakness of Filipinos; they used their power to do what they want to do. Especially I remember the system of the government, religious group and the justice implements in our country during the time of Spaniard colony. The whole time that I watch I feel blessed and proud for being one of the Filipino because we Filipinos fight for freedom in a good and nice way. We fight even we don’t have strong weapon to fight Spaniards army. I believed that the hero of El Filibusterismo is a rich jeweler named Simoun. He was Crisostomo Ibarra of the Noli Metangere. One good thing I saw in the play was that, it did not only show simoun’s (Jose Rizal) strong or positive points but his weaknesses and personal struggles also. It only shows that no man is perfect as was our national hero. However, this does not degrade his personality and character. Instead, it strengthens even more the views that Dr. Jose Rizal understood and had a good heart for his fellow countrymen. The impact of El Filibusterismo is to awaken the eyes of the Filipinos, to make revenge against the Spaniards, it just for peace and to get back the freedom. To show how Spaniards abused Filipinos. How the government system affects our lives. How religious groups used their power to manipulate Filipinos. Also El Filibusterismo...
