Based on your review of various annual reports, what approach is the most effective vehicle for this type of communication?
Miller (2011) stated that, “The most important part of a nonprofit annual report is the description of your accomplishments. Your readers want to know what you did, but more importantly, they want to know why you did it” (para.5). As long as the message is clear, and the results are presented, the form of the annual report must be an extension of the organization itself. The annual report should fit the culture and audience.
Which organization’s report told the best story?
The organization whose annual report I felt told the best story was that of “Clovernook Center for the blind and visually impaired” (Clovernook, 2011, …show more content…
The organization effectively told its readers what activities it was engaged in, what the effect of these activities were on their target audience, and where the money went that was raised by the organization. This sense of transparency was appreciated. Clovernook offered a simple presentation of their work without gimmicks or confusing graphics or images.
How does Adichie’s (2009) commentary on the danger of a single story translate to the organizational setting? How can her point of view serve as a useful lesson when developing an organization’s annual report?
Adichie (2009) stated that, “Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity” (17:35). This serves as a reminder that when one chooses to tell the story of the suffering, homeless, or poverty stricken that the story be told in a manner that serves the mission of the organization secondarily, after only it aides in uplifting the people who are the subject of the narrative. Since limited studies exist that examine financial reporting practices in emerging markets, little is known about the user perceptions of company annual reports in these markets. This paper contributes to filling this gap by examining the views of a wide spectrum of users on the usefulness of corporate annual reports in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach – The data reported in this study were collected through a questionnaire survey, covering seven user groups – accountants, executives, bankers, tax officers, academics, financial analysts, and investors. The 264 responses received were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA test. Findings – The results reveal that most use annual reports for obtaining information for share transactions. Despite the long delay in publishing many annual reports and lack of availability of these reports to the general public, the majority of users view annual reports as the most important source of company information.
