Abstract
Norma Rae is a true story set in a Southern mill-town in the summer of 1978. Norma Rae and the mill workers were victimized by the mill owners - low, unfair wages, and poor health conditions from the work in the textile mill. During this time Norma was fearful for her family's health and becomes aware of a labor organizer trying to bring the union to the mill. Norma decides to join forces with the union organizer, Reuben Warshosky. Management saw her as a threat and ordered her out of the mill, but not before she inspired the mill workers. It is greatt leadership that finally brings the mill workers together and they vote in and start a branch of the Textile Workers Union of America. The film is a real testament to the transformation of an oppressed woman who was a follower and then become a leader.

The story of Norma Rae is based on an actual event, it tells how a fast talking, middle class union organizer named Reuben Warshovsky comes to a small souther mill town to organize a branch of the textil workers union. The textile mill O.J. Henley Plant was run with low, unfair wages, and unhealthy working conditions. In the beginning Reuben wasn't having any luck and through his struggle with the mill workers he inspired one worker Norma Rae and she joined forces with Reuben. Norma was a tough, southern middle class working woman who felt stick in her ho hum drab extistence. She has a love-hate relationship with her father Vernon, who was overprotective of Norma. She was trapped with a job going no where and two teenage children. She has very little time for anything else but with Reuben's prodding finally joins him in his efforts to bring a textile workers union to the mill. He was horrified by their working conditions and pay.
Norma is not just about union organizing she is very concerned with the class struggle and class solidarity of the mill

Leadership in Norma Rae

...Leadership in "Norma Rae" "Norma Rae" is a film based on a true story set in a Southern mill-town. The title character and fellow mill workers start a branch of the Textile Workers Union of America through the use of leadership. The two characters of Norma Rae and Reuben Warshofsky combine their talents to empower and lead the people of the mill from downtrodden workers to proactive union members. When Rueben first comes upon the town, he finds the managers of the mill oppressive to their workers. People have no rights. They make small wages. They work long hours. Rueben starts the revolution for the mill workers by inspiring Norma Rae through Superleadership. Norma Rae in turn empowers and motivates the mill workers to attain their common goal: a union. Superleadership occurs when a leader leads others to lead themselves. Superleadership is appropriate for Reuben Warshofsky because it applies well to organizational leaders. Reuben is a representative of the Textile Workers Union of America. He came to Norma Rae's town to start a union at her mill. For his job to succeed, Reuben needs to be able to start the call for union, and leave the area confident that the cause is in good hands. Superleadership is designed to facilitate the leader within every individual. A leader who exercises Superleadership is not necessarily a "charismatic" leader. He may have a set vision and great oratory skills, but he does not lead to be followed or obeyed. He leads so that others can lead themselves...

Norma Rae Paper

...Norma Rae Labor Unions are an essential part of the work environment these days. Many companies and corporations deal with unions to better understand the employees wants and needs. In earlier years, unions were not as prevalent and popular with employers. Employees were scared to go rise up against the employer. As people became more aware of the positive affects on joining a labor union, many individuals bought into the union idea. The movie “Norma Rae” provides great examples to prove the facts issued on the AFL-CIO website. One of the main problems illustrated in the movie “Norma Rae” was the working conditions. The working conditions for Norma Rae and her coworkers at the textile factory were brutal. One of the characteristics I noticed about the working condition were the break rooms. The break rooms in the movie should be considered a closet space. The working conditions were also very dangerous and loud. During one of the opening scenes, Norma Rae’s mother loses her hearing because of the lack of protection from the employer (Ritt (Director), 1979, Norma Rae). The employers of Norma did not care about her and the other’s well-being during working hours. The employer only cared about productivity and numbers. The workers and Norma had very little breaks during the work day which is a horrible way to work. Many of the workers during the movie looked very run-down and overworked (Ritt (Director), 1979, Norma Rae). According to the AFL-CIO website, one of the main reasons...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
