...new generation of veterans with challenges. Adjusting to civilian life, getting a job in the bad economy and dealing with the mental effects of being in combat are just a few of the challenges that these veterans face. There are government programs and laws in place to help these brave men and women but many companies do not see the benefit of hiring a veteran and many people believe that they don’t deserve what they see as preferential treatment. Veterans have made sacrifices defending our country and our freedoms. Not only do I believe they deserve all of the advantages they earned but they also deserve to have preferential treatment when applying for jobs. We need to make sure as a country that they are not discriminated against while trying to make a living for themselves and get back to civilian life after putting their lives on hold to keep us safe. We as a society need to embrace our heroes and give them the assistance that they have earned. Today there are many problems that face veterans such as homelessness, unemployment, rising costs, foreclosure and bankruptcy. Many believe that because many of these issues are faced by all Americans in this bad economy it is unfair for veterans to receive special programs and assistance, but the difference is many veterans have PTSD. An estimated 367,749 veterans have shown signs of PTSD and have gone to the Department of Veterans Affairs for...

...social action creates stronger platforms for people to succeed and communities to develop more opportunities for improvement and involvement. Along with that universal truth, we must also acknowledge the fact that most of this change, most of these platforms, most of these improvements were started and spearheaded by the unspoken heroes and leaders of this world. Considering their 2.5% recidivism rate and their success in guiding people out of institutionalized and community-fenced prison systems, it is safe to say that Shahid and Connie Watson are two of the world’s greatest unspoken heroes. Shahid Watson is a native of Newark, New Jersey. Being one of five children, with parents and siblings who were involved in mainly drugs and violence, he had his sights set on getting out of his environment to create a better life for himself. After being homeless as a result of his familial situation, he graduated form high school in the top 10% of his class and was accepted into Rutgers University where he studied Business Administration (Watson, Shahid). As a result of the gang violence, drug abuse, incrimination, and the cycle of children being born into all of these categories, the Life Skills Academy was established in 1994. Life Skills Academy began out of a partnership with former NFL star Jim Brown (Cleveland Broncos) and Shahid Watson that started its movement by addressing the swelling gang violence in Los Angeles (Compton) and eventually began addressing the issue across...

...emphasizing the importance of gender roles and conservatism. In this system, women are mothers and obedient housewives, while men are the breadwinners (Domestic Violence Against Women in the Russian Federation). This strive for traditionalism leads many to weigh family over the individual. Thus, the spouses must endure all hardships of married life together. Domestic abuse is simply one of these hardships. The resurgence of traditional values is a response to the spread of liberal values in countries such as the United States (Hooper) which Kremlin and subsequently the media have painted as their main antagonist. In this story, Russia is honorably preserving the time-honored way of life, while the West seeks to disrupt and destroy it. These views have exacerbated the oppressive treatment of women in Russian society and in the family, allowing for the culture of domestic abuse to...

We can't cure every ill in society, You know, we're putting on football games. And unless it impacts the business, we have to be very careful about the disciplinary action we take. A player has rights too."" (Benedict, 2). -"The bottom line is that NFL players aren't like men in the general population, especially in the eyes of children. Rather, NFL players are seen as action heroes who epitomize strength, athleticism and toughness. That’s why so many kids emulate them." (Benedict, 2). -"The instinctive reaction and easy solution is to lay all the blame on the player and hold him fully responsible for his own problem and the taint it gives the league" (Steele, 1). -"Harsh punishments of such players have been tried by Roger Goodell from the time he became commissioner seven years ago" (Steele, 1). -"A fine of $2 million should get every team's attention. ...A tragic flaw is a flaw that is the common in most tragic heroes, and it is what brings the down fall of the tragic hero (Tragic 1, line 1). The most common tragic flaw is called, “hubris, which we usually interpret as a form of overweening pride, a reckless arrogance” (Booker 329, line 11). This flaw, unsurprisingly, is also exhibited by Creon. One of the most prominent exposures to how prideful Creon acts is when the chorus says, “Zeus, yours is the power, Zeus, what man on earth can override it, who can hold it back” (Schilb et al 872, line 678-680). This is in reference to Creon condemning Antigone to death. As Creon upholds the law of the land he has set in place, which was to not give Polynices a proper burial, he counter effectively makes him disobey the Divine Law. As soon as Haemon hears about...

...The Reality of Television Media About six years ago, a three-year-old child in London who weighed 83 pounds died from obesity. The parents—who may have partially been at fault for being unable to say “no” to their child’s destructive eating habits—were appropriately devastated. Obesity-related deaths aren’t especially common in children that young; however, childhood obesity has increasingly become a threat to children everywhere, with 20% of children aged six to eleven being obese (Ogden qtd. in CDC). Such a sad, shocking statistic ought to raise eyebrows and turn heads, yet parents don’t necessarily hold all the blame for their children’s obesity. It is likely that most children that young wouldn’t even know of such fattening foods without frequent exposure to it, regardless of how the exposure occurs. While I am not here to strictly talk about childhood obesity, it is part of the bigger picture: as the years go by, children are exposed to more and more television. It has gotten to the point where most children spend at least 1.5 times more time watching television than attending school (Herr)! More specifically, the average American youth watches about 1500 hours of television per year—that’s about 62.5 days per year of pure television (Herr). Many studies have been performed on the adverse effects of television on children, and generally speaking, television truly has a profound effect on their lives. Whether it be through advertising or typical programming, television...

If they do not follow these guidelines there is likely to be consequences. One environmental headline Caterpillar Inc. would rather forget was on August 1st, 2000, when it was awarded by the not-for –profit organization Clean Air Trust, the Clean Air Villain of the Month. It was said the company appeared to be deliberately avoiding the legal agreement to clean up their dirty engines. Only 13 months earlier the Justice Department and the State of California had signed off an agreement with Caterpillar Inc. The agreement with the company was made after an investigation found that more than one million heavy-duty engines emitted illegal amounts. Devices in the machines could go over their pre-sale emission tests and turn off all in the process of highway driving. The machines could emit as much as three times the allowable level of nitrogen oxide. (Clean Air Villain…, 2000) Caterpillar Inc. was under scrutiny again in 2003, for another violation of...

...Things such as tools, clothing, and medicine are often made from different parts of the animal. The killing of wild animals for food used to be a part of everyday life. There are people that are both for and against the taking of wild animals for these uses. Animal rights activists lack the knowledge of all the benefits we receive from hunting and act to fast in saying it is unsafe; two solutions to this would be to educate the activists on the benefits and to show them just how much safety is taken into consideration. The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a group of people that are against any type of the hunting of animals for food. Outcasts from ALF formed a militia, known, as the Animal Rights Militia (ARM). ARM believes that ALF does not take their violence far enough with regards to direct action (ALF, n.d.). Several examples of the violence that ARM is responsible for as stated on their website: Animal Rights Militia actions in England include incendiary devices causing economic damage to animal abusers. Some examples include Aug. 10, 1994 where C.H. Brown's saddler & leather shop, Madison and West World leather shops, Edinburgh Woolen Mill, and Nurse's fur store all had incendiary devices placed by ARM. Tens of thousands of dollars in damage was caused to the saddler shop. Another example is Aug. 24, 1994 when over $4,000,000 in damage was done with four incendiary devices placed at Sports and Model Shop (selling leather goods), Suede and Leather Shop, and the Cancer...

...ARISTOTLE'S POLIS: NATURE, HAPPINESS, AND FREEDOh1 Ideologists of all stripes seem to have difficulty dealing with t h e foundations of what is loosely called the ""Western tradition," t h a t is, the body of knowledge that has come down to us from Athens a n d Jerusalem. Of course, these days Jerusalem is simply ignored. T h e classical tradition, however, must be dealt with. Yet it is frequently so transfigured that what emerges is what the ideologist wishes u s t o see, rather than what is these. The most ambitious attempt at this sort of thing by a 'Yiberal" ideologist is Eric A. Havelock's T h e Liberal Temper in Greek Politics.' More recently and on a smaller scale, Fred Miller has, in the pages of this journal, interpreted one aspect of the classical tradition from the standpoint of "~ibertarianY' political theory, in his essay "The State and the Community in Aristotle's Polieics. "' This curious attempt to defend the "libertarianism9' of Lykophron and Mippodamus3 against Aristotle's '6ppaternalism9'is a daring, if ill-conceived, enterprise. In Miller's presentation, Aristotle seems t o emerge as a villain who misunderstand the enlightened political thought of the Greek "libertarians" and, we are to infer, derails subsequent political thought in the name of "'paternalism." Fundamental to Miller's reading of the Politics is the idea t h a t there is a distinction between ""cmmunity" and "'state" that Aristotle confuses in his use of golis. He argues that...

...The people of ancient Greece lived nearly 4,000 years ago. Yet even today, their culture impacts our lives! We received many gifts from the ancient Greeks. Ancient Greek Inventions are in fact the original concepts of some of our most well known products, to this day. Those original concepts have just taken on a more modern form. OLYMPICS: The first Olympics games are usually given the start year of 776 BCE, but they probably began even sooner. The ancient Greeks loved competitions of all sorts, especially sporting competitions. The Olympics were not the onlycompetition games held in ancient Greece, but they were the most popular. The Greeks took the Olympic games quite seriously. Nearly all the ancient Greek cities sent teams to participate in the ancient Greek Olympics. If two or more Greek city-states happen to be at war with each other when the game date arrived, war was halted for the duration of the games. Everyone wanted their city-state to win! Sciences Greece has importantly influenced the Western science in many ways. The Ancient Greeks especially contributed many things to the scientific world, from medicine to astronomy. The most famous ancient Greek scientists and their work are briefly described below. Thales of Miletus (640-610 to ca 548-545 BC) had travelled widely in quest of knowledge, visiting Crete, Phoenicia, and Egypt. Ηe brought Phoenician navigational techniques into Miletus. Thales is also said to have tried to revise the calendar. He also...

...goddesses have three basic roles life, death, and regeneration (Leonard & McClure, 2004, p. 114). The goddesses of life are Mother Earth, nature, sea, and universe. These goddesses are nurturers and overseers of security and contentment, prosperity and growth, and creativity and artistry. The mother earth goddesses are creators of earth and universe, such as Gaia of the ancient Greeks, and Tellus of the Romans. These two Earth goddesses gave birth to the sky, mountains, sea, moon, and stars. Some goddesses of life protect the institutions of family and marriage, such as Greek Hera (marriage) and Hestia (hearth), whereas other goddesses of life exemplify law and order to human civilization, such as Greek Horae- Eunomia (law and order), Dike (justice), and Eirene (peace). The Goddesses of Life carries the elements of nurturing,...

...these lines begins one of the greatest and most brilliant works of world literature - "Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri. "This is a poem about the Dante," danteida, "and at the same time, a poem about a man who, descending and ascending the ladder of the universe, cleaned, and acquires perfect knowledge." People at all times sought to know the universe. And he could not. Maybe that's why his "comedy" to this day loved by ordinary readers and critics, and researchers are still hotly debated around her, every day, opening in this work, something new, not yet solved. "" Comedy "- it's poetry, which has become itself the judge, interpreter, and the key to unlocking secrets" - rightly remarked Alexander L. Dobrokhotov in his book "Dante Alighieri". The theme of my work - "The conductors and the twins Dante and their functions in the" Divine Comedy. '"I think for most of its first full disclosure should understand that in general it is a product. First, the genre of "Comedy" - a vision. The entire poem - a "journey to the underworld, this poet in a vision." However, it is worth noting that "in the" Divine Comedy "the central character - not an abstract" I "and Dante with all the features of his personality and life events of the past ... At the same time," Comedy "is a fiction that develops on the literary laws." Dobrokhotov draws our attention to the fact that "the combination of real and personal fate of the literary scene was made possible by some middle managers - Chosen sense. Dante...

...African-American leaders such as Powell, Flipper, and McKinney. The accomplishments of these men paved the way for future African-Americans to flourish. These men along with the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskegee Airmen provided heroes for young African-Americans to admire and thrive to be like. Thrive to break barriers, prove wrong unwarranted doubt, and change the perception of a racially entrenched America. They were the beginning, some of the firsts, and they initiated the way for a new way of thinking. They started the healing in a deeply seeded illness. An illness called hate. It is an outstandingly hard illness to cure; however, not one of impossibilities. These valiant African-American leaders set underway a cure for a race, a nation, and a dream. African American Servicemen Contributions to Military History The United States Armed Forces has been one of great failures and great successes. One of its greatest failures was the inability to recognize at the time the contributions made by African-Americans as well as their ability for greatness like so many Caucasian Servicemen. Caucasian Servicemen such as General George S. Patton, General George A. Custer, and SGT Alvin York all contributed invaluably to the military including all of their prodigious accomplishments. African-American Servicemen have had as many accomplishments as Caucasian Servicemen, and they achieved these accomplishments in the...

...their own self-concept. These students end up finding similarities between each other because they have some sort of connection but only find it once they learn and open up about their struggles. There are many concepts of the self that can be found throughout the entire film. Empathy is one of the major concepts of The Freedom Writers. Empathy is the ability to put yourself into another person’s experience and to completely understand the other’s thoughts, feelings and way of being. (P.78) An example of empathy is when Mrs. G reads the journals and can really put herself into their shoes and really understand their individual experiences. If Mrs. G didn’t have a strong sense of empathy for the students, she never would have been able to help them conquer their personal demons. Mrs. G used a strategy called identity management to connect with the students. Identity management is when communicators use certain strategies to influence the way others view them. (P.81) An example of this is when Mrs. G plays Tupac in an effort to relate to the kids in the class. She hopes to have them see that they may have something in common and to open up to her. Reflected appraisal is the influence of others on one’s self-concept. (P.62) A good example of reflected appraisal is how Eva’s gang gets her to lie on the stand and participate in gang activities. The gang makes Eva believe that she is like them and needs to be doing what they do when she is really a good...

...veterans. Besides being homeless, this population faces other problems which include; social, economic, and psychological problems (Alker, 2009). Homeless veterans are more likely to suffer addiction as compared to the general population. According to Alker (2009), 76% of homeless veterans are alcohol or drug addicts. Because of the painful memories and the new reality of homelessness that dawn on them they turn to alcohol and drugs. Coupled with all the problems these homeless veterans experience social problems such as isolation. For this reason, they have no one to share their pains with and, therefore, they rarely receive help for treatable conditions such as addiction (Center for American Progress, 2008). Economic stressors are a root cause of homelessness for American veterans. The skills acquired from their military service, for many, fail to translate to job marketable skills or experience. Subsequently, female homeless veterans are less likely than male homeless veterans to secure jobs (Alker, 2009). That being said, it does not help that many veterans may come from disadvantaged families that are unable to undergird them as they return to civilian life. Additionally, the existing economic stressors...
