Nowadays, we can see people who are suffering from eating disorder by either eating too much or eating too less. Both of these eating disorders harm our bodies and are socio-culturally related. Binge eating, compulsive eating, and anorexic paradigm are formed by the society and culture. The way of teaching what to eat and how to eat, the image of what is consider aesthetic bodies, and the economy and social status have great influences on the way we eat and eating disorders.

In “Not Just ‘a White Girl’s Thing:’ The Changing Face of Food and Body Image Problems” by Susan Bordo, Bordo discusses the stereotype that people who are obese are generally white, heterosexual, North America, and economically secure. People tend to think that other races or classes of people do not have problems with eating disorders. However, according to Bordo, it is not that they don’t have eating disorders, but due to the fact that they do not have any cultural or economic supports, for example, Tenisha, who Bordo used as an example, speaks that the African Americans are encouraged to embrace their big, voluptuous body. The normal size or skinny size formed by the culture and media created a new standard for women. Anorexic paradigm becomes a widespread disease that had an impact on all races and classes. Eating disorder not only happens in women, but men are also affected by it for the reason that they are not satisfied with how they looked. Becoming more aesthetic is not the only reason people decided to become skinny or not eat, but it is also a form of empowerment for women in order to have control of their bodies and to reject the traditional identities.
