Known Stranger

...Known Strangers Acquaintance rape, commonly known as "date rape," is a form of sexual violence. Acquaintance rape is nonconsensual occurring between individuals known to one another, such as a current or former friend, acquaintance, someone you’re dating, or relative. Many people believe acquaintance rape is acceptable if the boy spent money on the girl, if the girl has a promiscuous sex history, or if the male and female have been dating or married. (David G. Curtis, Ph.D., B.C.E.T.S. “Perspectives on Acquaintance Rape” A rape victim sometimes experience secondary victimization from the police, friends, and family.) By being blamed for her behavior, the way she dressed, or for being alone with a man. This usually leads to victims blaming themselves for what have happened to them. Regardless of the circumstances, I feel as though using force, power, and violence to have sex with someone against their will is wrong. Nantucket Nectars

...Nantucket Nectars Case study Starting a new business venture is never an easy task. However, perseverance and a strong will to succeed can lead to success. Nantucket Nectars is a perfect example of such a feat. The company went from a “floating 7-eleven” to a profit making company. It took several years and even selling part of the company in order to raise capital to continue the business but all the hard work paid off. The owners realized the potential for continued growth but knew that more capital was needed so they considered partnering up with a more known company. This meant that they would be putting their company for sale. They needed a well known company to help them distribute their products especially to the large chain supermarkets who so far had not been very receptive to their not “well-known” brand. The Nantucket Nectars’ owners had many pros and cons to consider before their company went public. They wanted to still be able to have control over the company’s everyday activities. Furthermore, they wanted for the company’s culture to remain the same. They valued their employees who had been there all along this journey. Their informal attire and approachability of the owners was important to them. So, whoever they chose would have to have a similar approach. That could be hard to find as most big companies are rather strict and are set in their ways of doing things. Based on the data provided in the case study such as table C...

Analysis of the Known World

...Using wonderful literary devices, Edward P. Jones is able to show the effect of nature on Moses’ character, in his story, ‘The Known World’. He is deeply impacted by the natural world that surrounds him, and the author has successfully drawn attention to it. This is displayed strategically with the selection of detail as well as the vivid imagery that is presented. Firstly, Jones puts in a lot of detail specifically focused on nature to portray Moses’ attitude toward it. He describes Moses taking a bit of the soil, eating it ‘as though it were a spot of corn bread’ (19-20) and ‘clos[ing] his eyes’ (17-18). Eating this dirt ‘tied him to a small world’ (30-31) that he almost favoured more than his own life. Jones continues by transitioning the geography of his story to the scenery of the sun ‘fad[ing] to dark blue’ (22). This shows how he is enjoying the beauty of nature; by tasting the mud and adoring the view around him. Moses again ‘breathes deeply’ (48), smelling the coming of rain, and feels it ‘surge’ (49) through his body. Again, the connection between him and his natural surroundings is remarkably revealed. The link between Moses and the environment around him is thoroughly presented in this story with precise detail. Another way in which the author shows the association between Moses’ character and nature, is through vibrant imagery. Jones is heavy on the description of Moses’ surroundings, but little is focused on Moses himself. Details of the environment are so evocative...

...Gitanjali (Song offerings) by Rabindranath Tagore Formatted for Rocket eBook by: Kirby A. Heintzelman - June, 2000 Rabindranath Tagore(1861--1941), was the first non-White to receive Nobel prize (1913) for Literature. The event of course caused some furor at the time. New York Times in its prodigious generosity consoled its readers by alluding to the fact that after all Tagore was of Aryan Stock. It was first published in 1913 as a collection of prose translations made by the author from the original Bengali (a language of India) Poems. Evidence does indicate that the poet W.B. Yeats had a hand in editing and publishing it! GITANJALI 1 Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life. This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new. At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable. Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill. 2 When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would break with pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes. All that is harsh and dissonant in my life melts into one sweet harmony---and my adoration spreads wings like a glad bird on its flight across the sea. I know thou takest pleasure in my singing. The Long Song and the Known World

...A Horrific 19th Century Slavery: The Afro-Americans’ Unrevealed Truth (The Long Song and The Known World) A Term Paper Submitted to: Marie Anne Balanni English Teacher Submitted by: Nikka Ocampo Student INTRODUCTION Why most people in the ancient times are slave victims? Why do slavery happens in the past? This is what I wanted to discover in my research. When we talk of slavery, it refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they live and at what they work. Slavery had previously existed throughout history, in many times and most places. The ancient Greeks, the Romans, Incas and Aztecs all had slaves. To be a slave is to be owned by another person. A slave is a human being classed as property and who is forced to work for nothing. Andrea Levys’ novel entitled “The Lost Song” and Edward T. Jones’ “The Known World” revealed to us the plight of being a slave rooted from their ancestral family and own personal experience as a slave. The two books have the same plot that unraveled the world of human existence happened in 19th century where forced labor centered in the sugar cane plantation. The main characters have a slight difference because the first one is directly the slave victim and the latter is born slave but became a slaver, owning a slave he bought. The Lost Song is set in the time of slavery and it is a story about a person’s life and the times they lived through. July a black house slave, is the main character that tells her...

The Lesser Known Species in Florida

...are the most popular, but there are other species equally interesting and beautiful, as the river otter, beaver, fox squirrel, key deer and over 500 different types of birds ("Great Florida Birding and Wild Life Trail", 2014). Although some of these species of animals are found in other states, Florida natives are unaware of the fauna diversity in their own backyard. The state of Florida offers 11 national parks ("National Park Service", n.d.) where both natives and tourists can spot these animals. For this reason, teaching people about Florida's lesser known animal species can help increase visits to Florida's National Parks, encourages outdoor activities, and raise conservation awareness in this state. Florida has both native and non-native animal species, but out of the native the most recognized species may be the alligator and manatee. Florida is home to more than just that and teaching people about its lesser known species can promote visits to Florida's National Parks. As mentioned earlier, there are 11 national parks ("National Park Service", n.d.) throughout the state, featuring the Everglades, which the National Parks Service describes as "The largest subtropical wilderness in the United States" ("Everglades", n.d.). Also, because of Florida's unique ecosystem consisting of diminutive variations there is a variety of habitats, such as mangrove swamps, cypress swamps and pine flatwoods, giving way to an assortment of wildlife species ("South Florida Water Management...

He is completing a dissertation entitled “Revision, Reunion, and the American Civil War Text.” N THE FIRST SENTENCE OF HER ART OF SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS, Helen Vendler tells a little white lie: “I have reprinted both the 1609 quarto Sonnets and a modernized version of my own” (xiii). e crux of this declaration is “reprinted.” Vendler does indeed print a version of the 1609 quarto—or “Q,” as it is referred to bibliographically; one could even say that she “reprints” the type of the quarto. Vendler does not, however, “reprint” the 1609 quarto Sonnets. Like nearly every modern editor before her, Vendler presents the poems as discrete units on a page, eliding and ignoring the page breaks that so o en—and, I will argue, so meaningfully—interrupt the poems. In “reprinting” these poems, Vendler uses a de cut-and-paste method to rearrange, re-member, and reconstitute the type of the 1609 quarto into uninterrupted material units, into what we would visually recognize as “sonnets.” e...

Both Henry and Moses seem to have lost the ablity to love and find purpose in life whereas another slave on the Townsend plantation was able to discover it . Stamford was young when being seperated from his parents, an orphan boy, lost and taken by the world of slavery. He was set up to fail as a person, he just trying to survive life by trying to find “young stuff” because a man “once advised him [finding “young stuff”] would allow him to survive slavery” (72). The Known World- Book Review

...writes about the fictional Virginia county of Manchester and flourishes it with a host of vivid characters and their interrelationships. When Henry Townsend bought his freedom from slavery, he followed in the footsteps of his mentor, white slave-owner, William Robbins. Henry runs a plantation of over 30 slaves, an irony that is not lost on the slaves themselves nor on Henry's father, Augustus, whose principled stand against slaveholding by free blacks costs him very dearly. When Henry dies, his wife is unable to cope with her grief and life for his slaves is turned on its ear as slaves run away, an ambitious overseer plots to fill Henry's shoes, and slave patrollers descend with a vicious brutality. Perhaps the predominant theme in The Known World is the nature of the power and distinction that human beings desired to hold over one another in the southern United States during the period leading up to the Civil War. The novel’s central subject, African American ownership of other African Americans as slaves, encourages the reader to concentrate not only on the relationship between particular races, but on the fundamental desire to own other people. Blacks like Henry may have fostered their desire to own slaves based on their experience with white masters, but they do not necessarily want to become white or act as though they are white. The novel is intent on probing many different types of master-slave relationships that are defined in terms more complex than skin color or race...

The History of Our Known Universe

...Running head: THE HISTORY OF OUR KNOWN UNIVERSE 1 THE HISTORY OF OUR KNOWN UNIVERSE The history of our known universe At one time, it was believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that all 2 celestial bodies revolved around the earth. This belief was so deeply held that complicated orbits of the planets were created in order to ensure that the earth remained at the center. Anyone that dared to challenge the earth center model was immediately considered a heretic and faced very serious consequences. Can you imagine the kind of world that we would live in today if great thinkers did not challenge the common thought of the time? Aristotle was a very famous Greek philosopher. Aristotle subscribed to the belief that the earth was the center of the universe and that all celestial bodies orbited around the earth in perfect circles known as Epicycles (Dept. Physics & Astronomy University Of Tennessee, n.d.) . In order to ensure that the earth remained at the center of the universe, complicated models of the movements of the planets were created. Eventually, this model, created in 150 A.D., came to be known as the Ptolemaic Universe. This model called for the planets to move in perfect circles around the earth. Because the perfect circles did not account for the strange movement of the planets, the planets were made to move in smaller circles (epicycles) as they moved around the earth. More and more Epicycles were added to accommodate the strange movement...

Conflict of the Known vs the Unknown

...CONFLICT OF THE KNOWN Vs THE UNKNOWN The novel What is the What by Dave Eggers depicts the struggle of the Lost Boys during the second civil war in Sudan. Egger writes the book for Valentino Achak Deng, a Lost Boy, who gives us a first hand account of the brutal experiences that the boys encountered. On reading the book, it was very touching, because every incident was carefully described with emotion, and gave us an insight into various conflicts that Achak himself faced. Recently we (The University of Tampa students) were visited by one of the Lost Boys, Atem, and he shared with all of us his first hand experiences when he fled Sudan. Atem was faced with many conflicts. When he was only six years old he fled Sudan. He is currently in Jacksonville, Florida with his family except his dad who was shot. When he fled Sudan he had no idea where his family was, and had lost complete touch with them. In United States, he was later reunited with his family, and his mother was unable to recognize him. Although she eventually realized he was a grown man and she finally acknowledged it was Atem. The Lost Boys faced many conflicting moments and decisions on their way to Ethiopia. One conflicting theme throughout the novel is the idea of the known versus the unknown. For example, on the way to Ethiopia, Achak and all the other boys envisioned Ethiopia to have tall buildings and many healthy people. Achak imagined, “We would have chairs in Ethiopia. I would sit on a chair, and I would listen...

Comparing Two Well-Known Diets

...There are many different well-known diets that people turn to, to try and lose weight. At first these well-known diets may seem to work however; their success can be short lived. There is a good amount of these popular well-known diets. The biggest loser diet and the 4-hour body are two well-known diets. The biggest loser diet claims that an individual who goes on this diet will lose weight, gain health, and taking control of their life using portion control, lowering energy intake progressively, and following a customized food pyramid. This diet does have a couple of strong points that could be pointed out; it really stresses the importance of physical activity, as well as promotes drinking lots of water and selecting low-fat foods. Although these are both great strong points there are some negative effects that could take place on an individual’s body. This diet can lead to nutrient deficiency. It does this because the recommended energy intake for this diet is below the recommended minimum of 1200 kcalories a day. To have a healthy diet plan the adequacy of nutrition should be a priority. It is difficult to achieve a healthy amount of nutrients when consuming less than 1200 kcalories a day. Taking in less than 1200 also sets up for failure on...
