1. GSM Nation LLC

Seattle, Washington
Founded: 2010
What it is: Through its e-commerce platform, GSM Nation offers a wide selection of smart-phones, tablets and other wireless accessories. The company not only sells the physical device but offers a no-contract wireless service plan for consumers who don't want to be locked into long-term agreements. Besides BtoC, GSM Nation offers solutions for organizations ranging from the government agencies to Fortune 500 companies.
How it started: When Ahmed Khattak arrived to the U.S. from Pakistan, the first thought was to call his parents to let them know he was safe. Yet, when he went to buy a phone he was shocked he couldn’t afford to buy one without committing to a two-year contract. Plus, he didn’t he even qualify, because he lacked a Social Security number or credit history.
It was that moment he decided he'd find a way to help customers in the U.S. enjoy the benefits similar to the international community, where phones are unlocked and mobile plans are available contract-free. GSM Nation was soon born out of a Yale incubator.
Why it's a winner: With expectations it will hit $100 million in revenue in 2013 -- only three years after launch -- GSM Nation is a winner in our books. Plus, it is helping consumers save thousands of dollars and offers some individuals, who may not have otherwise qualified for a wireless device, the chance to own one. 2. PENCILS OF PROMISE

New York, N.Y.
Founded: 2008
What is it: Pencils of Promise is a nonprofit looking to increase access to quality education for children in the developing world. The organization works with communities across the globe to build schools and create programs that provide education opportunities.
How it got started: Beginning his career in finance, founder Adam Braun thought this was his path. It wasn't until he met a young boy begging on the streets that Braun's life changed. Asking the boy what he wanted most in the world, the child responded, "a pencil." Deciding to leave his perfect job at consulting firm Bain & Company, Braun launched Pencils of Promise with just $25.
Why it's a winner: Any endeavor that is centered around social entrepreneurship tugs at our hearts. And with Pencils of Promise, Braun has done some amazing things. The organization has built more than 150 schools across Africa, Asia and Latin America and delivered over 5 million educational hours to children in poverty. Pencils of Promise is on track to break ground on its 200th school by year end and is projected to deliver its 10 millionth educational hour within the next year.

3. iCracked

Redwood City, California.
Founded: 2010
What it is: iCracked is the world's largest on-demand repair and buyback network for iOS devices.
How it started: While a student at California Polytechnic State University, AJ Forsythe founded iCracked out of necessity. After breaking his iPhone too many times, he researched and repaired his own device. Word spread and iCracked quickly became a full-time venture. AJ teamed up with Anthony Martin in late 2010 and began scaling the business. The startup is now focused on providing the best on-demand service throughout the lifecycle of a device.
Why it's a winner: For anyone who has owned an iPhone, dropped it and cracked the screen, iCracked is a lifesaver. Not only does it offer consumers a few ways to get their phone fixed -- mail, do-it-yourself and in-store -- it is also less expensive than bringing it to an Apple store.

4. Cater2.me

San Francisco, California.
Founded: 2010
What it is: Cater2.me connects chefs, food trucks, pop-ups and top local food with offices and startups in the Silicon Valley, New York and Chicago. Since its inception, the company has served 800,000 delectable meals in less than two years.
How it started: Both co-founders Alex Lorton and Zach Yungst attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School. After graduating, the duo spent time working in consulting and finance jobs in the San Francisco area. They had noticed how amazing the food was in the city, but at their jobs they were eating boring, bland food. It was at this point they saw an opportunity to disrupt the catered food business.
Why it's a winner: With the mission to improve the lifestyles of staff at both large companies and startups, Cater2.me's curated meals and farm-fresh foods make it easy. Working with the likes of Square, Apple and Dropbox and scaling to areas outside their home base without venture backing, makes Cater2.me pretty impressive. 5. GiveForward

Chicago, Illinois.
Founded: 2008
What is it: GiveForward is a crowd funding site for medical expenses. Since its launch, it has helped thousands of families raise almost $56 million for out-of-pocket medical expenses. In 2012 the company won the Edison Gold award as the best new social innovation in the U.S. and was listed on Inc's 30 under 30 list.
How it started: After graduating from Yale in 2004, co-founder Desiree Vargas-Wrigley worked at the Kauffman Foundation, helping to support other entrepreneurs. Then came Hurricane Katrina. As New Orleans residents struggled to find aid, Wrigley wondered why there wasn't a reliable platform for donating directly to people in need. The same question nagged her six months later, when she spotted a donation jar in a cafe for a couple seeking a heart transplant for their child.
For a while, it seemed that others had already taken up the cause: Change.org, Kickstarter and The Point (eventually became Groupon). But none of those sites offered what she had in mind. Two years later, she decided to take on the idea herself.
Why it's a winner: Besides the obvious fact GiveForward is saving lives and helping American families avoid bankruptcy, it was also on the forefront of crowdfunding. GiveForward, IndieGoGo and Kickstarter all launched between 2008 and 2009. At that time the number of crowd funding sites could be counted on one hand.

6. APUS Group

As of October 2015:
Latest valuation:$1.0b (January 2015) CEO: Li Tao, founder
Location: Beijing Competitors: Nova Launcher, Go Launcher
Founded in 2014

In 2014, Li Tao saw the need to create a simple, user-friendly app that lets people customize the home screen of the Android mobile operating system.
So he left Chinese security software giant Qihoo 360 Technology Co., where he was in charge of smartphone products, and assembled a group of young Android fans to start up APUS Group.
The APUS "launcher," released in July 2014, attracted 1 million users within its first week, and 100 million users in six months, according to the company. In less than a year, the Beijing-based startup's bundle of apps, which include a variety of other mobile tools, had more than 200 million users worldwide as of August.
While most Chinese mobile apps focus on the domestic market, APUS is a rare example of a Chinese app primarily targeting overseas users. More than 90% of APUS launcher users are overseas, and the app is available in 25 languages, the company said.
The company plans to double its work force to 200 employees this year.
As APUS continues its expansion, the startup has attracted strong interest from venture capitalists. In January, the company said it raised $100 million in an investment round led by Chengwei Capital, SIG and Qiming Venture Partners.

7. IRONSOURCE

As of October 2015:
Latest valuation:$1.1b (August 2014) CEO: Tomer Bar Zeev (co-founder)
Location: Tel Aviv, Israel Competitors: iBario, Somoto
Founded in 2009

The motley crew that founded Israel-based IronSource Inc.–including three brothers and two former F-16 fighter pilots–still worked out of cafes even when generating annual revenue of $10 million.
IronSource Ltd. has grown immensely since then by taking a central role in a world in which software is distributed mostly over the Web. Its install software manages downloads and optimizes the process to create a better installment success rate. That software is now in over 2 billion computers, helping IronSource generate more than $260 million in revenue in 2014 along with Ebitda of about $55 million.
The company’s original customers were part of Israel’s bustling adware industry – a host of companies that draw most their revenue from affiliation agreements with online search providers. Many of these companies have been accused of being major sources of PUP – Potentially Unwanted Programs. Such programs, many of which users wouldn’t recall ever installing, may change a computer’s settings, activate pop-up ads or do worse damage. IronSource’s competitors like iBario Ltd. and Somoto Inc. hail from the same Israeli ecosystem.
The adware industry faces two big challenges. The first is the move from personal computers to mobile devices, which strips the industry of many of the tools it used to drive revenue, installations included. The second is increasing pressure from the likes of Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. on issues ranging from lack of transparency to unsavory advertising-injection methods.
To address these challenges, IronSource is bolstering its mobile products like MobileCore, a mobile-ad distribution platform. A growing share of the company’s clients comes from China.
Having tapped J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley, IronSource is expected to file for an IPO in the U.S. in 2015.

8. GRABTAXI

As of October 2015:
Latest valuation:$1.6b (August 2015)
Location: Singapore
Founded in 2011
CEO: Anthony Tan (co-founder)
Competitors: Uber, EasyTaxi

Anthony Tan hatched the idea for GrabTaxi when he was a student at Harvard Business School in 2011. His vision: create an app to easily connect riders and taxi drivers in his home country of Malaysia.
GrabTaxi Holdings Pte. has since expanded to Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Mr. Tan says it is Southeast Asia's biggest taxi booking app, with 620,000 monthly active users in early 2015 and more than 60,000 registered taxi drivers.
To use the app, passengers type in their pickup location and destination. Taxi drivers, regardless of the taxi company they work for, can then accept bookings. The startup, which makes money through a combination of fees paid by drivers and riders, does not reveal its revenue or overall profitability, but says it is already making money in some markets.
The company's biggest challenge comes from competitors like ride-sharing service Uber Technologies Inc., which has expanded aggressively in Southeast Asia, a crucial market given its population of roughly 600 million. Another is EasyTaxi, which operates around the world and is backed by Rocket Internet AG, a German investor and developer of online businesses.
In one important respect GrabTaxi differs from Uber, perhaps its main rival. While the San Francisco company faces standoffs with international regulators over its legality, GrabTaxi has worked closely with government officials to ensure it complies with local laws, Mr. Tan says.
Mr. Tan has the transportation business in his blood: His great-grandfather was a taxi driver, while his grandfather co-founded Malaysia’s Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd., which distributed the first Japanese cars in the country and now assembles and sells vehicles. Mr. Tan says his upbringing taught him to be polite and to respect his elders – along with government officials.

Founded by German entrepreneur Oliver Samwer in 2007, Rocket is a cross between a venture-capital fund and a consulting firm that founds startups and helps them grow. ...Improving Your Note Taking ▪ Effective note taking is one of the keys to succeeding in school. Students should devote a considerable amount of time reviewing information discussed during classroom lectures. It is very difficult remembering specific details from classroom lectures without good notes. These note taking strategies will help you to take better notes: ▪ Make clear and accurate notes Make sure to take legible and accurate notes since it is not uncommon to forget key details discussed in class after it has ended. Frequently, students comprehend the teacher's lecture, so they'll neglect to jot down specific details only to forget them later. Students who keep accurate notes can review them later to fully grasp key concepts during personal study time. Additionally, since during classroom lectures teachers frequently cover many topics, effective notes enable students to concentrate on specific topics. ▪ Come to class prepared Students properly prepared for class usually take better notes. Proper preparation includes completing assigned reading prior to class and reviewing notes from previous lectures. Students who do this can ask questions about confusing concepts and be prepared for new topics. ▪ Compare your notes To ensure your notes are as accurate and detailed as possible, compare them with the notes of other students after class is over. Note Taking Assignment

...Dean Helton Note-Taking Assignment 1. Why did you choose Cornell, Outline, or Visual Map? I chose the visual map way of taking my notes this morning at church. I have actuallynever taken my notes that way before, but I really enjoyed it. I am a kinesthetic learner and seeing maps and graphs help me understand things a lot better than just simple notes. I was nervous at first to take my notes this way but I very quickly got the hang of it. After the sermon it was much easier for me to look over my notes and understand what the message and sub nots were pointing out. I will now take all of my sermon notes this way. 2. What did you like about the style of note taking you chose? I enjoyed using this style for many reasons. One of the main reasons was because it gave me the opportunity to listen more to the sermon wrather than focusing on writing down the notes that we were given. It also was a huge help to me after when I was looking over the notes. It gave me a clearer picture of what the sermon was about. 3. What did you dislike about the style of note taking you chose? I think the only thing I disliked about it is that it is almost like an outline,a nd if you are not careful you could miss an important long point that need sto be recorded just for the sake of making your picture graph look good. I added a few take away points at the bottom of my notes that I felt like I needed to add so that I could better understand the over all message. 4. How do you plan...

...FIVE NOTETAKING METHODS Notetaking Great note-taking takes practice. You have to find a method that works for you, and that may change depending on the class that you’re in (for example, a science class versus a humanities class). Here are 5 methods that are proven to be successful. Read over each one and decide if there’s one that might work for you. These styles are described in the format you would use to take notes in class. You might find that a comfortable method is a combination of 2 or more of the ones listed here, and that’s fine. Figure out what works for you and stick with it! Page # Layout of the page and where to write THE CORNELL METHOD Today’s Date You physically draw a line vertically down your paper, leaving 2.5 inches on the left and 6 inches on the right. This allows you to take notes on the right-hand side of the page leaving space on the left to summarize the main point with a cue word or phase. When the instructor moves to a new topic, skip a line. It is also a great idea to use some organizational structure to your whole page. Use bullets!  Use an indented system – kind of like outlining You can underline important words. If you aren’t able to completely write down an idea before the instructor moves on to a new topic, fill it in after class. After class, test your knowledge of course material by covering up the right side of the page, reading the cue words, and trying to remember as much information as possible. Then check to see if you remembered...

...between people in our rapidly advancing generation. In Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman’s play Post-Its (Notes on a Marriage), we watch as two young people who are in love and newly married, begin to leave each other post its notes when they have no time for communication with one another. The author successfully tells an amazing love story using a unique means of communication. According to Anne Maydan Nicotera, “communication is critical to inter-personal relationships” (Nicotera). The notes vary from topics such as one not wanting to wake the other as they leave early for work, for tasks that need to be completed throughout the day. The audience, through the reading of the post- its notes views the couple’s life as it goes through the early stages of a relationship, to having a child, to a downhill slide of their relationship, the steady reconstruction of a marriage, and eventually it goes on until one of the two passes on. By leaving these post-its notes, the unnamed couple manages to have a basis of communication upon which they both are able to agree upon. They manage to find a convenient and effective way to convey what they need to say to one another through post-its notes, and even though things get rough, and arguments ensue, they find their strength and return to one another. Their relationship is refound with a clean slate, and although there are occasional spats in the notes, the audience can see that their relationship is much easier once they settled their problems and...

Also, when someone has the will to power they will become in love with the very idea of using their power to dominate others even by ways of cruelty” (Nietzsche). In the graphic novel, Death Note, the deeds of the protagonist of the story, Light Yagami, represents the destruction of one’s rationality and devotion to the will to power principal. What starts as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to save the world for Light becomes a path built on the pleasure of his own dominations and rise to power. The premise of Death Note is both simple and provocative: floating above the human world is the world of the shinigami, gods of death who cause human beings to die by writing their names in notebooks. Occasionally, either by accident or malice, a shinigami drops it’s notebook into the human world and an innocent person picks it up. In Death Note, brilliant and handsome young high school student Yagami Light picks up a notebook dropped by a shinigami, who has fortunately written the rules of the Death Note on the cover. The most important rule is the most simple—if you write down the name of a person whose face you know, that person will die of a heart attack within forty seconds (T. Ohba). Light later discovers many permutations—the most significant is that he can specify both the time and...

...Taking Notes Eboni M. Whitfield Grantham University Student Success & Week 6 Taking Notes “Hang on to the world as it’s spinning around. Just don’t let the spin get you down”. This will always be one of my favorite songs by a great lyricist, Donny Hathaway; Someday we’ll be Free. In learning and retaining songs, I refrain from listening to it over and over again. I listen to a line of the song and write each line out. Writing the lyrics to songs is almost like note-taking. This strategy is in alignment with the Sentence Strategy in which I feel is most useful and effective in note-taking. The sentence note-taking method consists of writing a list of sentences as you read through the material (Johnson, 2011). The advantage to this strategy remains that it is more organized and it records most of the information. A disadvantage makes it difficult when it comes to determining the focal points and editing. Based on the courses I am taking, is this strategy most effective? Yes. Are there other strategies that may be effective? Yes. I have also found that with note-taking in my current courses, the strategy that best suits me is the mapping strategy. This strategy has been used in the past and in the light of the concepts of note-taking, it is also resourceful. This strategy allows readers to pinpoint the main theory of what they read and provide a visual representation of relationships between information and ideas (Johnson, 2011). Because research...
