...------------------------------------------------- Philosophy Western philosophy Some would consider the study of "nothing" to be foolish, a typical response of this type is voiced by Giacomo Casanova (1725–1798) in conversation with his landlord, one Dr. Gozzi, who also happens to be a priest, “ | As everything, for him, was an article of faith, nothing, to his mind, was difficult to understand: the Great Flood had covered the entire world; before, men had the misfortune of living a thousand years; God conversed with them; Noah had taken one hundred years to build the ark; while the earth, suspended in air, stood firmly at the center of the universe that God had created out of nothingness. When I said to him, and proved to him, that the existence of nothingness was absurd, he cut me short, calling me silly.[3] | ” | However, "nothingness" has been treated as a serious subject worthy of research for a very long time. In philosophy, to avoid linguistic traps over the meaning of "nothing", a phrase such as not-being is oftenemployed to unambiguously make clear what is being discussed. Parmenides One of the earliest western philosophers to consider nothing as a concept was Parmenides (5th century BC) who was a Greek philosopher of the monist school. He argued that "nothing" cannot exist by the following line of reasoning: To speak of a thing, one has to speak of a thing that exists. Since we can speak of a thing in the past, it must still exist (in some sense) now and from...

...Nothing – A mere seven characters long word but with such significance in our lives, which cannot be ignored. It has such diverse number of uses in our lives which we cannot even imagine. Everything, from us to the whole universe, started with this one word. It is the beginning of everything. As we can say, the step zero of all the processes is always ‘Nothing’. If something is already there then it cannot re-originate. Nothing existed before the Big Bang happened, which led to the creation of the universe. Now as the universe is already there, it cannot be re-created without it first being destroyed which will again lead it back to the step zero. It is also the most widely used word by us nowadays. ‘Nothing’ is what we do most of the times. It just may be the profession of a huge number of people in the world. Some love doing it and some are forced to it because of certain circumstances. To speak of it, at some point of time or the other all of us want to just sit back, relax and do nothing. This is what ultimately everyone’s goal is, this is what we work hard for all our lives. We all study hard to make a good career so that we can earn a lot of money and then just sit back and enjoy without having to do anything, which means being happily retired. It can also be used to hide our feelings and thoughts from the others. When we don’t want to discuss or talk about anything, we simply sum it all up in just this one word and the topic ends. Another form in which this word...

...There's nothing to say about nothing. Still, some people make a fuss about it. Among spiritual seekers, there's a lot of talk about "becoming nothing". On this site about nothing, we're not going to talk about "nothing", because "nothing" can't be talked about. When people talk about "nothing", they're not really talking about nothing, they're talking about something. It's not a real nothing, it's a "nothing" they can hold in their mind. It's a nothing that feels like something, perhaps a black hole, perhaps a lonely place. They have words for it, perhaps "void", "emptiness", "nothingness". Nothingness is not nothing. It comes and it goes, so it's got to be something. You can look at it. You can hold it. You can throw it out. And when you throw it out, what's left?... ...And that's all we're going to say about that. This little introduction has nothing to do with the articles on the site. It's just here to confuse the philosophers and perhaps intrigue a few people with a genuine interest in nothing. This is a site about nothing. We hope you enjoy it. Perhaps you'd like to start with a 25-second playful video clip about a show about nothing? love numbers. And I have always loved computing. That's the whole reason computers have had such a strong pull on me since 1981, when my mom's boyfriend decided I should have my first computer: a Sinclair ZX 81. I would like this section to be about numbers, computing and computers. At the moment, it's all about computers...

...* The sands of time 31 December 2013 The sands of time is another way of referring to time. It is more poetic and is often used when talking about how time passes. Examples: "I am always ready to score the winning goal," said the footballer, dismissing those who said the sands of time are running out on his long career. Plan for your retirement. The sands of time catch up with everyone. * Live in the present 24 December 2013 Present as a noun has two meanings. A present is a gift. The present is the time we are experiencing at this very moment. When you tell people to live in the present you want them to deal with current events and not be too concerned about the past or planning for the future. Examples: Don't worry if your former boyfriend cheated on you. Live in the present and find another person to love! Johnny was keen to save money to buy a house. His friends told him to live in the present and go on a holiday with them. * One in the eye 19 December 2013 If you say something is one in the eye for someone, it means that something is a big disappointment or a defeat for them - but you are pleased about their disappointment. Examples: I got the job! That's one in the eye for John – I've never liked him and I was sure he would get the position. Ha! Our winning the championship was one in the eye for our rival team – they are always boasting about their skills. * Get your skates on! 17 December 2013 If you tell someone to get your skates...

...Examples of Descriptive Writing The purpose of descriptive writing1 is to make our readers see, feel, and hear what we have seen, felt, and heard. Whether we're describing a person, a place, or a thing, our aim is to reveal a subject through vivid and carefully selected details2. Each of the four paragraphs below responds, in its own way, to the guidelines in How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph3. The writers have selected a belonging that holds special meaning to them, identified that belonging in a clear topic sentence4, and then described the subject in detail while explaining its personal significance. In the following paragraph, observe how the writer moves clearly from a description of the head of the clown (in sentences two, three, and four), to the body (sentences five, six, seven, and eight), to the unicycle underneath (sentence nine). Notice also how the concluding sentence helps to tie the paragraph together by emphasizing the personal value of this gift. 1) A Friendly Clown On one corner of my dresser sits a smiling toy clown on a tiny unicycle--a gift I received last Christmas from a close friend. The clown's short yellow hair, made of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the eyes. The blue eyes are outlined in black with thin, dark lashes flowing from the brows. It has cherry-red cheeks, nose, and lips, and its broad grin disappears into the wide, white ruffle around its neck. The clown wears a fluffy, two-tone nylon costume. The left side of...

...NothingAssertiveness Assertiveness is the emphasis of a person’s needs or thoughts in a manner that is respectful, direct and firm. Communication styles exist on a continuum, ranging from passive to aggressive, with assertiveness falling neatly inbetween. People who are passive and communicate in a passive manner tend to be good listeners, but rarely speak up for themselves or their own needs in a relationship. People who are aggressive and communicate in an aggressive manner tend to be good leaders, but often at the expense of being able to listen empathetically to others and their ideas and needs. People who are assertive strike a balance where they speak up for themselves, express their opinions or needs in a respectful yet firm manner, and listen when they are being spoken to. Becoming more assertive is one of the most desired communication skills and helpful defense mechanisms most people want to learn, and would benefit in doing so. EXAMPLES of ASSERTIVENESS 1. As we have already stated, respect both yourself and the other person (or people) involved. It all starts here. This is the foundation. Respect of everyone is necessary. 2. Always begin with a disarming statement. Begin with any of the following statements. You may find a few others along the way, but these will always work. Choose any one of these depending on the situation and your personal preference. In some instances, you may use more than one, but usually one will suffice: * Compliment the other person...

...simply by my dad accepting a job in Pakistan. Resulting me being more close to my relatives, removing the prejudices about Pakistan and, gradually loving my motherland. In May 2004 my dad got a job from Karachi. Both my parents missed Pakistan very much, having all their brothers and sisters there and not having met them for ten years really made them homesick. My dad instantly accepted the job without even considering how I felt about it. Egypt was my home for ten years, the place where I had all my friends and spots where we hung out. The idea of moving to another country 5000 km away scared me. Starting from scratch, making new friends, learning a whole new language and the things I heard about of Karachi really frightened me. There was nothing that I could say or do that would change my parents mind. After a month we moved to Pakistan. It was the first time I was in Pakistan and was entirely different from what I had expected it to be. The first thing my parents wanted to do was visit all of their brothers and sisters. Most of my cousins are of my age, at first I wasn’t excited to meet my cousins but after having met them I realized that nice they were, we had many common interests. Over the short span of few months I and my cousins became very close. I never realized how essential cousins were until I met them Before moving to Pakistan I was curious to know more about it. I opened my computer and searched for Pakistan specially...

...The strict pull-up is a bodybuilding-style pull-up in which the purpose is to maximally contract the muscles of the back and arms – mostly the lats, biceps, and forearms. The rest of the body is meant to remain in enough tension to maintain a rigid structure. With the strict pull-up, the body should not move except for those joints which are required to perform the movement itself, the elbows and shoulders. All other joints should remain relatively stationary, as they shouldn’t contribute to the force production required to execute the exercise. This is the classic exercise that people think of when they hear about pull-ups. (LINK) So, basically you need to increase muscle hypertrophy — in particular, the lat and bicep muscle. You have to train your core too because you have to keep your other parts of the body tense while doing pull-up, so it is easier for you. Below will be the exercises I can think of to improve your strength. If you do it properly, you should be sore the next day. Please do not do the same workout consecutively for two days because when muscles are sore/ torn, they need at least 24-48 hours to repair (usually 24 hours, unless you really trained hard). Switch the muscle group you trained daily, e.g., Monday train back muscles and arms, Tuesday train shoulders and etc. But actually I can’t think of any other part of the muscle that you need to train, so I will just give you what you can do to improve the strength of your back and arms. So as long as you...

...M4 – Analyse the reasons why costs need to be controlled to budget. Introduction – for this assignment I will be analysing the advantage and disadvantage about the business that brad owns, which involves transporting business people to and from the airports using luxury cars. Furthermore I will also explain what the word budget, fixed, variable and total costs means. The main topic that I will cover is the fact that if brad does nothing to his costs than what effects will it have on the business as well as him. Explain: 1) If they are not monitored then: - Managers may not notice problems because he can’t take steps to correct the problems if he doesn’t know it exists, he won’t know if he made more adverse or more favourable. If Brad doesn’t know that he have made more adverse than he will not be able to know how much adverse he have made and on which item. If the costs are not controlled by him than he will go above his budget and he will make a loss. 2) Paste in the Eco Clothing variance analysis and explain why it may be overspent in each area of adverse variance (refer to your completed hand-out) 3) What problems might this create? - Reduced profits - problem because…. - The need to replace/better train staff - problem because…. - The need to source new material suppliers/renegotiate - problem because…. - Pressure to increase prices - problem because…. Conclusion – • Consider (and then explain) how without the budgeting process (the setting...
