Is Family Ever Normal?
Who’s to say, what the ideal family really looks like? As we all are entitled to our opinions, what looks like the perfect family to me may not look quite so perfect to another. We shouldn't view family as the necular family because it extends further than the immediate household. Family can be considered anyone who shares the emotional relationship and unconditional love for each other. We shouldn't judge others based on our beliefs or culture. Growing up we learn important values from our elders and family is the beginning foundation for your learning. Your family does not necessarily have to be blood related, but traditionally consists of a mother, father, and children. With time comes change, and society’s definition of family differs in 2013 than the 1950’s. Reality television shows today compared to 1950’s do not portray families to imitate, it’s mostly broadcast for entertainment.
Reality television shows are a big hit these days. On average there are about 320 reality television shows that are shown throughout the year, compared to only four in 2000. In “What We Really Miss About the 1950’s,” the author Stephanie Coontz describes shows such as, “Leave it to Beaver” and “ Donna Reed” as shows American families should imitate. Children respected their parents more in the shows and maintained a close relationship throughout their lives. I feel respect towards parents is an important value, but we don’t see it very often it reality television. For instance, in the show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, the children, who are ages 6, 12, and 15 speak to their mother any way they please with no consequences. Another show I feel Americans shouldn’t imitate is Sister Wives. The parents chose to live a polygamist lifestyle, and the father is married to three wives. I believe their lifestyle to be adulterous. Even though these shows are for

Feminist Theories

...Marxist feminist Michelle Barrett (1980) argues that the role ideology plays in convincing women that unpaid domestic labour is fulfilling is important. Barrett discusses the ideology of ‘familism’ the notion that female fulfillment lies in the family. For Marxist feminists, the cause of female oppression is rooted in capitalism. They argue that although individual men benefit from women’s subordination, the main beneficiary is capitalism. Women are an unpaid labour force, as unpaid housewives, and have been used in WW1 as a reserve army of labour. This oppression is believed to be maintained by the role women adopt within the capitalist’s system as the unpaid homemaker in the family. Women are conceived that this unpaid role is natural and normal, through the ideology of ‘familism’ that promotes female fulfillment as achieved through motherhood intimacy and sexual satisfaction. Marxist feminists believe that in order to end female subordination, we must overthrow capitalism as well as the ideology of familism. This would free the sexes from restrictive family roles and ensure that domestic labour was shared equally. Strengths of Marxist feminists include the fact that they have demonstrated the power of structural factors, such as capitalism and ideology in constructing an explanation for women’s subordination. However, Marxist feminists have been criticised for failing to explain women’s subordination in non-capitalist societies. Marxist feminism also places insufficient emphasis...

A Comparative Analysis of Flannery O'Connor

...distinguished between the grandmother of the family and Julian’s mother. The two characters share the static notions of how each class is represented in regards to race and propriety through the racist southern traditions which they were raised. In “Good,” the grandmother of the family is viewed as an older woman who clings to racism and traditional southern standards which dictated how a person was to act due to the social class which they belong. The grandmother’s static belief that race and class are joined becomes apparent during the scene when the family passes the Negro child on the side of the road which states, “‘Oh look at the cute little pickaninny!’ she said and pointed to a Negro child standing in the door of a shack. ‘Wouldn’t that make a picture, now?’ she asked and they all turned and looked at the little Negro out of the back window. He Waved. ‘He didn’t have any britches on,’ June Star said. ‘He Probably didn’t have any,’ the grandmother explained. ‘Little niggers in the country don’t have things like we do. If I could paint, I’d paint that picture,’ she said” (O’Connor, “Good” 3) In this scene, the grandmother objectifies the Negro child as if he were a caged animal to watch and then she classifies him as a lower class because he is a Negro and therefore must unable to afford pants. The objectification of the boy is a direct effect of the notion that because he is a Negro, he must be in a lower class whereas because the family is white, they are able to afford many...

How to Write a Compare &Contrast Essay

...How to Write a Compare/Contrast Essay Compare and contrast essays are the other big essay types in academic writing. These essays will follow a specific question and are fairly easy to complete. There are several ways to write this type of essay. The most important thing to remember is structure. Many wonderful essays fall victim to the woes of bad structure, making any ingenuity to fall by the wayside. Go over the rules on how to write a general essay, and then structure your compare/contrast essay in one of the following two formats: 1. Introduction 2. Your introduction — like the five-paragraph-essay, should open generally (with a quotation, anecdote, generalization), and lead into the thesis statement. 3. Topic 1 4. This next portion of your essay (which may consist of one paragraph or several) should cover only the first topic of the comparison and contrast. Compare/Contrast essays take two topics and illustrate how they are similar and dissimilar. Do not mention topic 2 in this first portion. 5. Topic 2 6. This next portion of your essay (which may also consist of one or more paragraphs) should cover the second of the two topics. Do not discuss Topic 1 in this section. Since you have already gone into great detail about it, you may allude to Topic 1 briefly; however, do not analyze Topic 1 in this section. This portion of the paper is to discuss Topic 2 in great detail. 7. Topics 1 and 2 Together 8. Now that you have analyzed both Topic 1 and Topic 2 independently...

The path they followed in having children and their stated attitudes toward fatherhood reflects common American ideas about the importance of both biogenetic connections and caring for children. The most essential American idea includes the significance in resemblance to one another to stablish a kinship relationship and resemble a nuclear family. Interactive Narrative Study: Mothering Children With Autism

...More specifically, in a sample of 33 families of children with autism, Gray (2003) looked at the gender role differences that parents displayed in the coping strategies that they used to come to terms with their child’s highfunctioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome diagnosis. Mothers in this study voiced the disparate struggles they faced in caring for their child with Asperger’s syndrome, such as the intention to work outside of the home, but had the inability to do so because of the immense demands that their family life places on their responsibility inside of the home (Gray, 2003). Contrastingly, fathers felt less impacted by their child’s autism than the mothers of their children, especially because of the fathers’ often indirect role in the care of the child (Gray, 2003). Corroborating with this notion, Gray (1993) suggests that it is the mothers who take on more responsibility for the family care, where fathers are more on the peripheral, as “reserve source of support for their wives” (Gray, 2003, p. 635). Using discourse analysis in a qualitative study of stigma as experienced by...

Great Diluge

...Notion of a Great Deluge Name Institutional Affiliation Notion of a Great Deluge The notion of a great deluge is often associated with the story of the great flood in the Bible. However, several early cultures across the world have legends and myths when at one time in the past a shocking deluge wiped nearly all life on earth. Nonetheless, habitually a deity caused all these deluge stories to end civilization and bring about divine retribution (Issar, 2014). Most of them also have a hero who is chosen to survive. A discussion entailing the notion of a great deluge will be made with proofs of a flood in the respective regions being made available. In the Genesis flood narrative, God is disgusted with the profundity of the sinful nature of man thus resolving to flood the earth. Noah, a righteous man, is instructed to build an ark. After the ark’s completion, Noah, his household, and male and female representatives of all animals are called upon to enter it (Issar, 2014). The deluge destroys all life, not in the ark. Later, the waters recede and all those aboard can get off from it besides God promising never to send a flood again. The rainbow serves as the sign of God’s promise. In the flood story of the Babylonians, the gods undertake to wipe out civilization owing to disturbances due to human overpopulation. They first used a plague and famine but did not succeed. Enlil then advised the other gods to use a flood, but Enki instructed Atrahasis to build...
