Unit 11 Assignment

A computer network is 2 or more computers and other computing devices connected together so they can communicate with each other by sharing data, hardware and resources. The devices on the network are called nodes. Nodes can be connecting by using twisted pair copper wire cable, fiber optic or radio waves.

Computers and nodes can be connected in pattern and is known as the topology. There is a few different type of topology. The most common topology are - RING, MESH,STAR,TREE, and BUS.

There is also different type of computer network, the types are based on the capacity and the organization purpose. The most commonly network include Local Area Network (LAN) , Wide Area Network (Wan), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Personal Area Network (PAN).

A LANs use wired connections to connect the computer to each other such as a cable (thin cable, thick cable, and twisted pair), fiber optic and wireless transmission.
The purpose of a LAN is to allows computers on the network to share their resources such as hard disks, Printers, etc. for use by other computers on the network as if they were their own. LAN users can communicate with each other by chat or email. LAN computers can back each other, avoiding the stand-alone system without backup, failure may occur when system fails. The hardware that is required to build a LANs is Router, Network Interface CARD (NIC), cable connectors, Power Supply and PCs/Workstations.
