In the 4th quarter of 9th grade science we continued our study of chemistry with a focus on chemical formulas, chemical reactions, and stoichiometry. Formative assessments included practice questions on how to write proper names and formulas for chemical compounds, balancing equations, converting between chemical units, and titration problems. The lab experiments for the quarter consisted of a freezing point experiment, chemical flame test comparison, the activity series of four metals, production of hydrogen, and the titration of an unknown concentration of acid. Summative assessments for the quarter were an evaluation of the freezing point experiment, written exploration of the flame test experiment, and two unit exams on chemistry topics. In 10th grade students will study science topics related to biology, environmental science, and some…show more content… He did not submit an evaluation for the freezing point lab and his exploration for the flame test lab was very short and did not contain most of the criteria required by the rubric. I think Andrew has the ability to complete these assignments but sometimes chooses to simply not do them. He will need to improve the quality of his assignments and his attention to rubric criteria to be more successful in future years. His results on our introductory to chemistry unit exam showed he understood some of the concepts and ideas but his results on the unit exam about the periodic table and chemical bonding were quite poor. Much of the content was new to Andrew and he did not spend enough time preparing before the exam. Throughout this year Andrew has shown that if he studies he can do well on exams but a lack of effort leads to poor results. After the exam he did approach me about retaking the exam to improve his score but did not follow up on doing this. Andrew can do much better in his science classes and I encourage him to apply a little more effort to do
