Cell Bio Bites Topic: Peroxisomes – What are they, where do they come from and what do they do?

Peroxisome – Small organelle that is enclosed by a membrane; it makes use of Oxygen (molecular form) to oxidize organic material. As a result of their functions, some of its enzymes produce hydrogen peroxide as a by-product, while other enzymes have the capabilities to degrade it.
Plant peroxisome – Peroxisomes that are specific to plants. They perform as well as aid in the processes of many plant cultivations such as detoxification.

Due to these processes we are able to release unwanted formations of molecules; for example the harmful hydrogen peroxide. Specifically, studies are recently trying to identify many more processes and developments that peroxides take part in.

Peroxisomes are specialised in nature; because of their profuse quantities and unique protein composition, they can be used models reflecting the adapting capabilities of the organism in response to different environmental conditions. Because of their role that peroxisomes play in so many plant development stages such as embryogenesis, seed development and reproductive development, they are ideal to view the details as to how the plant develops in different biotic and abiotic conditions it is placed …show more content…
The model for this experiment was the plant known as Arabidopsis as well as its seeds. The specific ecotype used was Col- 0.

The Arabidopsis seeds were initially sown into the soil, placed in compartment with no access of light and 4 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days; plants were also inside of a controlled growth compartment with the temperature at 22 degrees Celsius under daytime modified conditions (16 hours of white light at 100 μmol photons followed by 8 hours of darkness) for 3.5 weeks ahead of the drought treatment.

What is one major conclusion or discovery of the paper? The study performed in this article has given a greater understanding backed up with data, of how specific genes encoded by peroxisomal proteins are able to produce a response to their environmental surroundings. This feature of the study provides a set up for investigation of how peroxisomes play a role in the way plants react and adapt to their unwanted environment states.
