In laboratory 3, we will be exploring what light is and what gives an object its color. In addition, we will be using alternate light sources which will help us define the precise and characteristic wavelengths of light that certain elements will show through the colored bands seen when looking through the diffraction grating. The materials that are required for this lab will be the following: 3 meter sticks, 1 incandescent light source, 1 diffraction grating (600 lines per mm), 1 pencil, 1 element discharge tube, and 1 Helium, Hydrogen, Mercury or Neon light bulb.
In the first section of lab 3, four lab partners will be divided into two pairing two students on the right side of the table and the other two on the left. The groups will then be assigned either an incandescent or an …show more content…
In step 2, we will align two meter stick head to tail on our lab desk. At one end of the meter stick we will place an incandescent light source and at the other end, we will place the diffraction grating. In the middle of where the two meter sticks meet, we will then place a third meter stick perpendicular to the two others. Step 3, after this is all set up, the lights should be turned off. Step 4, we will record our observations after looking through the diffraction grating. Step 5, one partner will look through the diffraction grating while the other partner moves a pencil along the length of the third meter stick. The partner looking through the diffraction grating will tell their lab partner to stop moving the pencil when they believe their partner has reached the middle of the green region of spectrum. The length would be recorded in our notes. Step 6, we will proceed to finding the wavelength of the green region by plugging our measurements into the equations on the report page. Step 7, the partners will change places, repeating steps 6 and 7 looking at the near violet and far red end
