CECT IV:
IV contrast in CT is used to for enhancing blood vessels and the tissue structure organs like the brain, kidneys and liver. Intravenous means that a small needle is used to inject contrast media.
Pre-medications
a. Prednisone – It is a corticosteroid. The body releases substances that cause inflammation and this medication prevents it. This medication also helps suppress the immune system.
Functions:
• It is used as an immunosuppressant medication or an anti-inflammatory.
• Treats allergic reactions, skin problems, inflammation of the colon, lupus, psoriasis, or respiratory disorders.
Protocol: 50mg Prednisone PO 13, 7 hours and 1 hour prior to IV injection
b. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) – It is an Antihistamine. The effect of natural chemical histamine in the body is reduced by this drug. Several symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose are a result of histamine usage. …show more content…
Protocol: 50 mg taken intravenously 1 hour prior giving contrast

c. Methylprednisolone (Medrol) – It is also a corticosteroid that prevents substance release in the body that can cause inflammation. Since it is a steroid, it can weaken the body’s immune system making it easier for the patient to get an infection or worsen an infection the patient already has. It may also increase the glucose level in the blood and urine.
Functions:
• Treats inflammatory conditions like arthritis, psoriasis, Inflammation of the colon, allergic reactions, endocrine problems, and conditions that affect other body parts.
Protocol: 32 mg by mouth 12 hours and 2 hours prior to contrast
