The first independent variable is the different luminance cues which included light, equiliminant and dark conditions, and the second independent variable was the target location either positioned on the same side (valid trial) or at an opposite location (invalid trial). The dependent variables include the reaction times of participants measured in milliseconds and the responses recorded for stimuli identification.

It is speculated that both the Magnocellular and Parvocellular streams in the lateral geniculate nucleus contribute to the essential task of processing color and motion information. In my experiment, participants will view a computer monitor displaying a white and black checkered background image. This image will be presented at low and high contrast to match the brightness and luminance patterns of the chromatic and achromatic stimuli presented. Specifically, two small squares will be the stimuli appearing in each trial at varying locations. Each stimulus will be presented with it’s opponent color pair. For instance, red and green will be paired together while black and white will be paired together. The stimuli will be moving upwards or downwards at a slow or fast velocity across the checkered background. The participants will be instructed to use the arrows on the keypad to indicate the stimuli’s direction of motion. After each trial, a blank white screen will appear for thirty seconds to avoid a refractory period altering results. Catch trials with no stimuli moving will be randomly inserted to ensure that the participant is paying attention. Accordingly, I will measure response times and the accuracy of responses to see if the threshold for identifying first order motion is effected by luminance and hue
