This is a galvanic cell. In this type of cell, electrons are transferred from one species to another by redox reactions. The reaction is split in two half reactions, in this case: Mg2+(aq) + 2e- ---> Mg(s)
And Cu2+ (aq) + 2e- ---> Cu(s). Electrons flow from anode to cathode through electrodes and the conductor wire and the energy released is measured by a voltmeter. The salt bridge allows for a free flow of ions between cells and keeps the solutions in a neutral electrical environment.
