...Number 40 The feeling of forgetting a phone, a name, and an address is simply frustrating and can mess with your head. It can make you quite uneasy and ruin the rest of the day. Some part of you is not really there, when you forget you’re most valuable belongings. The feeling of forgetting and delirious is exactly what we see in the short “Number 40” by Sarah Butler, from the anthology The Picador Book of 40, 2012. In the short story Number 40 we meet the anxious and unbalanced Melissa. Melissa is feeling anxious because she forgets a lot of things, and this time it is her phone. The short story is told through a third person limited narrator, where the narrator follows the forgetful Melissa throughout the story, and the reader is only able to read only her thoughts and feelings (s. 1, ll. 1-2) Melissa is living with her fiancé Simon: “Now they were living together”. “The ring Simon has given her two weeks ago” – “Three neat diamonds caught in three gold claws”. Simon has proposed to her, just two weeks ago. Melissa felt sick at the time, Simon proposed to her (s.3, ll. 84-85) she either felt vile because of the food or maybe she had a bad hunch towards the relationship. Moreover the relationship did not always seem to go as smooth (s.1, ll. 1-7) She feels like he is ignoring her, like she is not even there. The narrator uses flash back (s. 1, ll. 14-27) where Melissa and Simon was on vacation, where everything seemed wonderful and happy. But as soon as they came home...

...------------------------------------------------- Analytical Essay – Number 40 ‘’When she picked up the receiver, Melissa realised she didn't know Simon's number. She always just scrolled down to his name on her mobile.’’ This is how the narrator of Sarah Butler’s short story ‘’Number 40’’ describes Melissa’s loss of memory, which is chasing her throughout the story. The numerous attempts to fantasise her away from her lonely invisible everyday life culminate in the end, and she has to face the reality. These are some of the difficulties we are dealing with in the short story, through the actions and thoughts of the Melissa. The story is told through a third person limited narrator, who follows Melissa throughout the story. The narrator describes the story through Melissa point of view, and we get an insight of what she thinks and feels, though it’s told in third person: ‘’Melissa watched his face. His jaw moved in a chewing motion and she wondered if he ground his teeth in his sleep. He turned to her, lips pursed.’’ (p. 2, l. 106-108). Because of Melissa’s memory loss and strange behaviour, the narrator becomes unreliable. As a reader, we don’t get any other information than from Melissa, and it’s difficult to assess whether it corresponds to the reality. Through the confusing point of view, the reader creates it’s own interpretation of the story. The main character in the short story is Melissa, which seems very anxious and unbalanced. She is very confused about...

...In the 1950s, there was a significant challenge and thought of a recharged enthusiasm for creating Overton Park, with the extra reproductions of the national interstate thruways. Overton Park is depicted as a recognized 342-acre section of land which was turned into a group park, it was utilized for multi-reason diversions. Inferable from its adaptable plan, Overton Park soon turned into the social focal point of Memphis. Among its numerous attractions, the recreation center contained the "Memphis Zoo, the Memphis Museum of Arts, a (9) nine-opening fairway, a structure, and two little lakes." (Cooper, 2007, Pg 240) The subjects of Memphis developed common worries about the pulverization of the regular excellence of general society park incited by Congress. Has the administrator acted within his/her proper range of authority? Yes, even though the Court claimed the case to its sum. Overton Park was the milestone for the Supreme Court case. Congress plainly did not expect to bring about the interruption of the group; in this way this case was built up by the structure of a legal survey for regulatory activities. Even though the sectary replied that the case should have been dismissed because those that were bringing the action did not have to stand. (Cooper, 2007, Pg 241) "The death of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 and the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1968 taught the recently made Secretary of Transportation not to affirm the utilization of area from openly claimed...

... It’s a process of hiding information so that outside sources cannot see or manipulate it. The most secure web encryption is 128-bit. It uses a longer sequence of bits to increase strength of encryption by offering an additional 88 bits of key length. This encryption uses a public key during the encryption process and a different private key for the decryption process. Most all providers now use 128 bit encryption which means there are 339 trillion different combinations to crack the code. (FAFSA) This ensures security of the data you send over the internet through secure sites. 128-bit encryption is so secure that trying to crack it simply isn't feasible. 128-bit encryption is 309,485,009,821,345,068,724,781,056 times stronger than 40-bit encryption. (FAFSA) It would take significantly longer than the age of the universe to crack a 128-bit key. Current cracking technology puts 128 bit encryption in the very hard to crack realm, but is not unbreakable. It just makes the duration longer and resource consumption more intense. In that case, those trying to crack have to consider if the unknown asset is worth the effort. State secrets may well be worth the effort 128 bit encryption is not bad encryption, but nor is it the best, the encryption standard for the government is 256 bit. If one wants to improve security, he or she could consider increasing to a 256 or 512 bit encryption. Also the use of salt and multiple algorithms will help increasing the security of one’s...

...Just another one-hit-wonder or a true star? One Direction. Nickelodeon wannabe or really committed? Big Time Rush. These are both questions when thinking about these two bands, but both bands have strengths and personalities which allowed them to strive. I really can't say if the pop music in this generation has gotten better or worse, because there are so many posers out there you can't tell who's autotuned and who isn't. At first glance, the bands seem identical, because they both have a fan base populated by girls and they're both boy bands. People also think that these bands' will fade out in a couple of years just like Hannah Montana and But truthfully, their music videos and acting, hit singles, and what they could do to have fans staying happy are completely different. Both One Direction and Big Time Rush are great bands, but both have to work to make it to the top. Originally, the members of One Direction each wanted to be solo artists. Yet if it hadn't been for that twist of fate and the discovery from "X Factor", One Direction wouldn't have been where they are today! Other than music videos, the boy band has no acting experience, yet they have 80 MILLION views on YouTube! The closest this boy band has gotten to acting is when Nickelodeon made their online diaries into a weekly television show as of March 2012. Only one of their singles, "That's What Makes You Beautiful" was on the Billboard Top 100, but that doesn't mean they aren't famous! They have performed on...

...Merely 35 years after the last shot was fired in the American Civil War on June 22, 1865, in 1901, anticipating his imminent displacement, George White—the last African American remaining in Congress—retired. He was a victim of North Carolina’s disfranchisement schemes. On the eve of his departure from the House, Mr. White lamented, “The mule died long ago and the land grabbers have obtained the 40 acres.” Audible in his tone was the frustration that underlay more than 30 years of broken promises made to African Americans. The phrase “forty acres and a mule” that Mr. White refers to in his address has its roots in the Special Field Order # 15 (SFO # 15). The order was signed into effect on January 16, 1865 by General William Tecumseh Sherman; just two months after Abraham Lincoln had been reelected to office. SFO #15 entitled each freed family forty acres of tillable land on islands and the coast of Georgia. However, there is no mention of mules (or any animals) in the field order. A popular fable is that Sherman's commissary man came to him complaining that he had a large number of “broken down” mules for which he had no means of disposal. Sherman sent the useless animals for distribution along with the land. The first two sections of the SFO # 15 describes the area where the land was to be reserved and section three clearly indicates the size of the land to be allocated. “Special Field Orders, No. 15 I. The islands from Charleston, south, the abandoned rice fields...

...Poor Barney Barney has finally decided to retire after many years in law enforcement, and Barney has done relatively well and setting himself up for a good retirement by participating in some early life real estate investments (Tailer, 2014, para.1). Barney owns some property in the North Carolina mountains as well as property on North Carolina’s coast. Unfortunately, Barney has some issues that will need to be addressed both legally and spiritually while attempting to clean his rights in regards to his property. The main legal issues in this case study are eminent domain, adverse possession, joint tenancy, and good-faith purchases of value. Co-Ownership Joint ownership of property occurs when more than one person holds entitlement of a property at the same time. There are many different forms of joint ownership such as joint tenancy, tenancy in common, and tenancy by the entirety (Kubasek, et al., 2014). Specifically, joint tenancy with rights survivorship is a type of co-ownership when one owner dies, the surviving owner or owners become the new owners the deceased share or title of property (Garber, 2014). This is important to Barney because the legal rights to his property were put in jeopardy by one of his co-owners Andy had left interest in a will to his son Opie. Opie took out a personal loan and used is presumed interest in the property as collateral. Opie then defaulted on the loan and the lender tried to foreclose on the land (Tailer, 2014, para.3). North Carolina house...
