Mr. Jorge Rifa’
City Council and Administration.
2535 Commerce Way
Commerce, California 90040

Dear Mr. Rifa’ and Councilmember’s:

I understand the concerns of the quality of air and environmental safety of your resident’s has been a priority on your list of concerns. I recognize and appreciate the efforts the City of Commerce has done by addressing the concerns of the added pollution caused by the trucking traffic and railroad yards.

I understand there has been many letters written from the City of Commerce to the Los Angeles City Council regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that was prepared for the Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) project which addresses the potential growth of the railroad yards that is needed to accommodate the increased rail and container traffic. The increase in traffic will also increase the poor quality of air emitted in the City of Commerce. The lead agency is the public agency which has the principal responsibility for approving a proposed project such as the SCIG.

The railroad yards and trucking transportation is the main industry of this city that increases the revenue, but the environment must be a safety priority to your residents. How can the city continue to increase their revenue without continually putting the residents at an increase in health risk due to the smog and carcinogen causing pollution from the trains and trucking industry?

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is a statewide policy that was passed by the United States federal government for environmental protection. The California Environmental Policy Act (CEPA) passed in 1970, which does not regulate land use, but requires the state and local agencies within California to follow a

...Persuasive Letter Deborah D. Mogg NUR/405 June 11, 2012 Kim Hall Persuasive Letter Dear Mr. Supervisor: My name is Deborah Mogg and I am a Registered Nurse and a student at University of Phoenix in the RN-BSN program. I am writing this letter to you as the Supervisor of the Charter Township of Waterford to bring forward an issue that I feel needs attention in our township. I recently completed a Windshield Survey of my immediate community of Watkins Lake Estates and I have lived in Waterford for sixteen years. During this time I have noted the lack of adequate right-of-ways for both pedestrians and bicyclists. I also noted the alarming number of overweight and obese adults and children in the community. I’m sure you are aware of the exploding epidemic involving obesity and the increase of chronic disease conditions related to obesity including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). The effects of obesity and poor nutritional choices are well-documented and reported in every form of media available today. You may not be aware that the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2011-2020 as the Decade for of Action for Road Safety, with the stated goal to reduce road fatalities around the globe utilizing efforts at the regional, national, and global levels (“UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”, n.d.). I think these two can be put together to promote awareness and a healthier lifestyle for our community...

...Persuasive Letter NUR/405 2012 Diane Schlicke Persuasive Letter October 25, 2012 Brunilda Price Coordinator of Community Services Community Health Assessment and Planning Ocean County Department of Health175 Sunset Avenue Toms River, N.J. 08754 Ms. Price, I am a Registered Nurse pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in nursing through University of Phoenix. The class focuses on healthy communities, theory, and practice. One assignment for the class is to assess a family and conduct a windshield survey and community health nursing reflection in the community that the family resides. Working with the members of the family and the relationship that family has with the community and how they interrelate with each other is very informative. The Community Health Planning unit of the Ocean County Department of Health is the agency to contact knowing the division assesses current health conditions, obtains health statistics, and collects data regarding health indicators, resource for residents and community-based organizations, and identifies opportunities for improvement in health care. Identifying a community problem of childhood obesity that will adversely affect a toddler in the family that I am affiliated has heightened my interest to prevent the devastating outcomes associated with obesity (Ocean County Department of Health, 2012). Preventing lifelong disease process is a goal for the welfare of the community population. Addressing the issue of healthy food...

...Persuasive Letter Nur/ 405 May 2012 Persuasive Letter Dear Editor, Recently I have done a windshield survey of the community of Vale and an assessment on a family and would like to bring to your attention about a health problem that is affecting both groups. Vale has a host of health problems which includes drug and alcohol use, but the one that I am addressing is obesity. The Friedman family assessment done on the family I chose also cooks in a lot of grease and carbohydrate that is affecting their family’s health. This indicates to me that these unhealthy choices need to be addressed because the family may be at risk for heart disease. Both the community and the family are at risk for health problems that are related to obesity. This problem is related to the culture of the people in the community which is similar to the culture of the family. I am writing to you as a member of the Vale community and a healthcare professional that has worked with the family at risk. I am confident that with proper knowledge and adequate resources in place, both groups would benefit by learning how to incorporate what they learn in their daily activities and how to make healthy food choices. The National institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, (2011), states that “obesity refers to an excessive amount of adipose tissue and occurs when more calories are consumed than burned; energy balance is tipped toward weight gain, overweight, and obesity.” Some people...

...Persuasive letter University of Phoenix Healthy Communities: Theory and Practice John Marshall NUR 405 February 13, 2012 To the Editor, For the last 10 years I have practiced as a Registered Nurse and have also been a resident or our community. I feel that there is a significant amount of language barriers in our community and the language barriers between Hispanic and Caucasian populations have continued to delay needed healthcare services. There has also been an undue burden placed on the community due to an increase in tax payer dollars because of a lack of insurance. I believe that in our community we could use wasted tax dollars in other areas, decrease hospitalizations, and increase tax dollars. The frustration of being misunderstood when trying to communicate is something that everyone has experienced. It is a very helpless and frustrating feeling and when on vacation we have all experienced this communication breakdown. Imagine this same frustration and helplessness when you are unable to receive the correct healthcare or because of a language barrier you were unable to understand the medical professionals and could not follow through with your own treatment. Many of the hospitals in our area feel that by providing an interpreter there will always be clear communication between the staff and patients. This is not so. We deal with many different cultures on a daily basis and are hard to communicate effectively. The words we use can...

...Persuasive Letter Week 6 Course NUR 405 July 9, 2012 Professor Sandra Winters To The Funding Agency for HIV/AIDS: There are many low socio-economic communities in Miami-Dade County that have a certain thing in common; these communities are plagued with co-morbid health issues. Prevalent in one particular community is the instance of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses among 18-24 year olds, according to Sigma Theta Tau initiatives and the United Nations, one goal is to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. A few of these goals are By 2015, halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and by 2010, achieve universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all of those who need it (http://www.nursingsociety.org). In order for this goal to be realized, it is up to us as nurses within these communities to provide proper education and preventative care, but resources are needed. According to Hope for Miami, Miami-Dade has the 4th highest HIV/AIDS rate of all major US cities and the highest teen pregnancy rate in Florida. Many small non-profit agencies are eager to help those in need but often don’t have the capacity or resources to effectively do so (http://www.fcfcfl.org). In order to provide this community with care, we have to make attempts to get rid of the health inequity. During a windshield survey around this community many signs of decay were noticed and among these dilapidated structures stood many young mothers with children and many unemployed persons. Many...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...
