I recently completed a Windshield Survey of my immediate community of Watkins Lake Estates and I have lived in Waterford for sixteen years. During this time I have noted the lack of adequate right-of-ways for both pedestrians and bicyclists. I also noted the alarming number of overweight and obese adults and children in the community. I’m sure you are aware of the exploding epidemic involving obesity and the increase of chronic disease conditions related to obesity including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). The effects of obesity and poor nutritional choices are well-documented and reported in every form of media available today. You may not be aware that the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2011-2020 as the Decade for of Action for Road Safety, with the stated goal to reduce road fatalities around the globe utilizing efforts at the regional, national, and global levels (“UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”, n.d.). Vale has a host of health problems which includes drug and alcohol use, but the one that I am addressing is obesity. The Friedman family assessment done on the family I chose also cooks in a lot of grease and carbohydrate that is affecting their family’s health. This indicates to me that these unhealthy choices need to be addressed because the family may be at risk for heart disease. I feel that there is a significant amount of language barriers in our community and the language barriers between Hispanic and Caucasian populations have continued to delay needed healthcare services. There has also been an undue burden placed on the community due to an increase in tax payer dollars because of a lack of insurance. I believe that in our community we could use wasted tax dollars in other areas, decrease hospitalizations, and increase tax dollars. The frustration of being misunderstood when trying to communicate is something that everyone has experienced. It is a very helpless and frustrating feeling and when on vacation we have all experienced this communication breakdown. Imagine this same frustration and helplessness when you are unable to receive the correct healthcare or because of a language barrier you were unable to understand the medical professionals and could not follow through with your own treatment. Many of the hospitals in our area feel that by providing an interpreter there will always be clear communication between the staff and patients. This is not so. Prevalent in one particular community is the instance of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses among 18-24 year olds, according to Sigma Theta Tau initiatives and the United Nations, one goal is to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. A few of these goals are By 2015, halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and by 2010, achieve universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all of those who need it (http://www.nursingsociety.org). In order for this goal to be realized, it is up to us as nurses within these communities to provide proper education and preventative care, but resources are needed. According to Hope for Miami, Miami-Dade has the 4th highest HIV/AIDS rate of all major US cities and the highest teen pregnancy rate in Florida.
