...The title of the research article I chose to critique is from the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. “Hypertension, orthostatic-hypotension, and the risk of falls in a community-dwelling elderly population: The maintenance of balance, independent living, intellect, and zest in the elderly Boston study”; this title fits well with the content presented in the research article. The independent variables are clearly defined as well as the dependent variables for the research being conducted. The content of the abstract is a very good overview of the content and it is consistent with the content. The abstract summarizes the objective, design, setting, participants, measurements, and results. Problem/Purpose The problem being investigated is the risk of falls in the elderly population related to the effects of controlled and uncontrolled hypertension and orthostatic hypotension. The authors do identify the significance of the problem as falls for being the leading cause of disability for the elder generations. Adequate background information is not provided to support the problem because the subject at hand “has not been investigated previously” (Gangavati, et al., 2011, p. 383). Explanation of the purpose of this study being conducted is provided by the authors. Literature Review The previous research articles and their outcomes are briefly described with different amounts of time from...

...Literature Search Paper NUR443 September 19, 2011 Professor Dina Faucher Literature Search Paper Numerous studies have been conducted to prove the relationship of shift work and fatigue and the results noted on medication errors. Two articles were chosen using the University Library, a qualitative research study and a quantitative research study from peer reviewed articles through the use of databases such as EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and Gale Powersearch. To research this topic, the query tool utilizing terminology such as shift work, fatigue, and medication errors was used to narrow the search. The intent of this paper is to identify the difference between research study articles versus plain journal articles, the type of nursing journals, and if the article is peer reviewed. EBSCOhost allows one to narrow the search, by selecting the mode as Boolean search, the source type as Academic Journal, the subjects as errors and patient safety, the publication as Journal of Nursing Management, AORN Journal, and Journal of Nursing Education, and finally the database as CINAHL plus with full text reduced the results to 259 articles. The articles are in order from most relevant to least relevant. Effects of working conditions of intravenous medication errors in Japanese hospital, written by Seki and Yamazaki was the most relevant article posted that encompassed the use of a quantitative research method to support the educational content. According to Burns and Grove (2011) “quantitative...

...Research Methods Summary, Week 5 Joseph H. Cortez NUR/443 June 5, 2012 Research Methods Summary Week 5 The results of this Quantitative study “Timing of Adiposity Rebound: A Step Toward Preventing Obesity” and through the use of statistics and comparison this correlational study has helped the health care profession with ways to identify the children who are at high risk for developing a high AR which in contrast will develop into obesity in later years. A correlational study is used to look for relationships between different variables. There are three possible results in a correlational study: a positive correlation, a negative correlation, and no correlation at all. The correlation coefficient is a measure of correlation strength and can range from -1.00 to +1.00. This study has a positive correlation. In summary to avoid a high BMI as well as a high AR teaching and practicing good eating habits and regular exercise can help prevent childhood obesity because the obese child will most likely become an overweight adult (Bloonpleng et al, 20120. One of the quantitative articles of this team is “Patient Education on Heart Attack Response: Is Rehearsal the Critical Factor in Knowledge Retention?” This article discussed that one of the most important patient education is explaining the early recognition and prompt response to the signs and symptoms of an acute myocardial infarction. The method used was a community- based quasi experimental study with assignment (cluster...

...Study Links Long Hours to Increased Errors | Top Abstract Background Method Results Discussion References | Study Links Long Hours to Increased Errors In 2005, the American Nurses Association House of Delegates resolved to disseminate recent research findings on the relationship between work hours, fatigue and errors. Dr. Ann Rogers presented the results of her study “The Working Hours of Hospital Staff Nurses and Patient Safety” published in Health Affairs, July/August 2004. Her study followed 393 registered nurses working over 5,317 shifts. Each nurse tracked hours worked, time of day worked, overtime, days off, sleep/wake patterns, errors and near misses. According to Dr. Rogers, fatigue results in: * Forgetfulness * Slowed reaction time * Diminished decision making * Reduced vigilance * Apathy, lethargy * Impaired communication. Delivery of health care requires higher cognitive functions – judgment, logic, complex decision-making, memory, vigilance, information management and communication skills. Fatigued workers try ineffective solutions to problems and neglect activities deemed non-essential. Sleep research indicates that most people need at 7.5-8 hour of sleep each night. Nurses in the study averaged 6.8 hours of sleep. Long hours, and the impact of competing priorities in personal lives impact getting adequate rest prior to working. In more than half the shifts, nurses were unable to take breaks due to shift demands...

...Vulnerable Population in the Workplace Noy-Starra Edge Nur/440 May 7, 2012 Mrs. Mendez Vulnerable Population in the Workplace Long term acute care hospitals (LTACHs), give extended medical, rehabilitative, and intensive care to individuals with clinically complex problems that need hospital level care for greater than 25 days (American Hospital Association, 2012). Many LTACH admissions are elderly patients, which is a vulnerable population. “Elderly and aged patients are considered to be capable and competent, they should be treated as a vulnerable group of patients, who may need additional care and protection of their interests because of their possible incapability to realize their rights themselves (Pishchita, 2007, p.350). Most LTACH take Medicare and Medicaid payments and all take private insurance. The government provides insurance for low-income seniors and younger persons with disabilities that are govern by the state of the individual. According to Caring for Vulnerable Populations (2011), these persons are among the sickest and poorest individuals making them rely on dual enrollment in Medicare and Medicaid government programs for necessary services. “55% of this population has an annual income below $10,000 and sixty million Americans currently obtain coverage through state-based Medicaid programs. These individuals come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and pose unique care coordination challenges. They disproportionately face chronic diseases and challenges...

...Planning and Design Analysis of a Qualitative Research Study NUR/443 Evidence-Based Nursing Research and Practice Planning and Design Analysis of a Qualitative Research Introduction A qualitative research is a “systematic, subjective approach used to describe life experiences and give them meaning” (Burns & Grove, 2011). With this type of research, the data are collected through interviews, focus groups, observations, and review of documents. Thus, qualitative research uses words instead of numbers. This paper is going to analyze the planning and design of a qualitative research paper titled: Patient’s experience of pain and pain relief following hip replacement surgery, published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing on October, 2010. Research questions Although the research question or questions are not clearly labeled in the study, the research questions were as follows: 1) How do patients describe their experience with pain after hip replacement surgery?, 2) How do patients describe their pain relief following hip replacement surgery?, 3) How does pain affect patients after hip replacement surgery? Problem A research problem is “an area of concern in which there is a gap in the knowledge base needed for nursing practice” (Burns & Grove, 2011). In this research, it was identified that many patients undergo hip replacement every year and previous research has focused largely on the long-term effects of pain for these patients but not so much on their subjective...

...Qualitative Research Article Critique Sharon Victoria-Cain NUR/443 February 7, 2011 University of Phoenix The article, “You Just Have to Make the Pain Go Away”-Children’s Experiences of Pain Management (2008) outlines a participatory case study undertaken in four pediatric units in a university hospital. Researchers collected data until theoretic saturation was reached. As a qualitative research, data techniques employed recorded interviewing and data analysis. The authors indicate that data collection techniques were triangulated in an inductive content analysis. Throughout the study, certain categories were identified from the data collected and coded – these categories were outlined in the tables at the end of the article and can be reviewed on the pain management nursing website. The results abled the researchers to inductively generate hypotheses which result in a grounded theory: “owing to the subjective nature of the pain experience, children’s self-reports should be the most reliable source of the methods used in the management of their pain” (Kortesluoma, Nikkonen, & Serlo, 2008, p. 147-148). There is a scarcity of research on children’s perception of pain and their expectation of pain management when in a hospital setting. Previous studies focused on methods used by health care providers and parents in alleviating children’s pain. This study’s purpose is to “describe the interventions young children use themselves and their expectations of other’s...
