Intended Major Profile Paper As of my senior year in high school, I plan to major in anesthesia and minor in psychology. Anesthesiologists or Nurse Anesthetists are one of the top paid healthcare professionals in the world as of 2015. With majoring in anesthesia comes a tremendous amount of responsibility. If the anesthesiologists gives the patient too high of a dosage, it could kill the patient, which would cause a lawsuit. From researching other occupations that intrigue me, I believe I want to focus on becoming an anesthesiologist for the emergency room. I like the idea of having a buildup of adrenaline running through my body, while putting someone under anesthesia for an emergency surgery. From all the research I have conducted, there are several schools in North Carolina that offer an anesthesia program in their graduate school. I also have concluded that many of these schools are expensive, but offer a remarkable amount of scholarships and grants for those who are less fortunate. Many schools in North Carolina offer a program focusing on anesthesia. A few schools have stuck out in my research. UNC Charlotte offers a program for Nurse Anesthetists through the Carolinas Medical Center they are partnered with. UNCG also offers an anesthesia program through the Raleigh School of Anesthesia. Lastly, Western Carolina University offers a twenty-eight month Nurse Anesthetist program. Out of all my research that I have conducted on schools that offer programs in anesthesia, I am leaning more towards UNC Charlotte. I have toured the campus and have fallen in love with the view. UNC Charlotte has everything that a college student would ever need right on campus. UNC Charlotte stands out to me because it reminds me of home. The campus is only an hour and a half from my house and forty-five minutes from my grandmother’s house. The campus is not too big and not too small. Another major seller for this campus was that they have a pharmacy on campus. This stands out as a pro to me because when I graduate from high school I will be a certified pharmacy technician. This would give me an opportunity to obtain a job while in school, without having to travel off campus. UNCG is not quite on the top of my list because I do not believe that it is far enough away from home for me. I was considering UNCG only because you have to get our BSN from UNCG in order to apply for the Raleigh School of Anesthesia. Western Carolina has weighed on my mind a little because of their reputation of being one of the top universities in North Carolina. I would love to attend WCU, however, I do believe that the campus is a little too far from home, as well as too cold. There are numerous of topics being debated and discussed in the field of anesthesia. One of the major topics being debated in this field is should anesthesiologist be able to perform assisted suicide? This is a debate that has been going on for years. It addresses the idea that if a patient is competent enough to make decisions for themselves, should they be allowed to request an anesthesiologist to put them at ease by overdosing with anesthetics? Another research topic that is being conducted in the field of anesthesia is the long lasting affects the anesthetics have on the elderly population. While these research topics are primarily based in the field of anesthesia, you have to become a nurse before entering the anesthesia programs. Many nursing students are conducting broad medical issues. At UNC Charlotte, they are researching and focusing on the mental barriers and challenges of women who are or have been deployed. The nursing students are conducting research on these women, mostly those who are amputees and are not coping well emotionally. UNC Charlotte’s nursing students are also researching how the brain of veterans suffering from PTSD is change or altered. Western Carolina nursing students are focusing on the topic of making people aware of the care taking skills needed to take care of people with learning disabilities. At UNCG, many of the nursing graduates completed research on the topic of do minorities diagnosed with diabetes lack the education needed to take care of themselves properly? North Carolina universities have a tremendous amount of scholars teaching the classes. Karen Lucisano is a key scholar at UNC Charlotte; she is an adjunct lecturer. While she spends her time lecturing classes and teaching our graduate students information, her primary focus is on her job as the coordinator of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at UNC Charlotte. Nancy Shedlick is the associate director of the clinical education department at the Raleigh School of Anesthesia. She teaches and is in charge of the students learning the information they need to know for clinicals and to be able to fulfill their jobs as CRNAs. These professors and administrators are well-known for their reputation of being good educators to their students. After all the research I have conducted, I have finalized my decision on becoming an anesthesiologist. I am not just looking at this major because of the money, but for all the responsibility they have to have. I believe that this health care career is beneficial to me. I have also decided that I am going to apply to UNC Charlotte, Western Carolina, and Duke University. I have weaned off of attending UNCG and then transferring to the Raleigh School of Anesthesia because I would rather stay at one school until I have obtained the degree that I want.

Adn vs Bsn

...Adn vs Bsn: Differences Rachel McAdams Phoenix University September 2, 2010 Adn vs Bsn: Differences may be a Matter of Degree In the late 1850s Florence Nightingale started her own school to train nurses and developed standards by which nurses performed their duties. She may never have envisioned that one day there would be different educational tracks resulting in multiple degrees and disciplines in nursing, each having their own set of criteria for excellence. Associate degree nurse (ADN) and baccalaureate degree nurse (BSN) are the two most common entry level nursing positions. An ADN can be obtained in two or three years whereas the BSN takes four years of education to complete due to additional courses. Differences between the degrees begin with education and mature as the nurse gains experience. Raines and Taglaireni’s (2008) article states ADN and BSN nurses attend the same basic liberal arts and general education courses such as English, literature, history, math, humanities, and arts. Both have basic nursing courses, the same technical skill sets are taught, and nurses must pass the same National Council Licensing Examination for RNs (NCLEX-RN©) which measures minimum technical competency for entry-level nursing practice. Colleges will differ in the exact requirements for each degree but the community college ADN program consists of approximately 75 course credits of which 38 are science and liberal arts prerequisites, and 37 credits are in the...

...but since 2001 the United States has had a 13% vacancy rate of unfilled , full-time RN positions and this has not changed as in past times ( Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). According to Fox & Abrahamson, 2009,” A web of dysfunction exists that is far more complicated than any single factor, “(235-244). There are many influencing factors to blame for this nursing shortage. One such factor is the population imbalance created by the Baby Boomers aging and leaving the workforce and the smaller Generation X’ers that have to try and care for all of these aging people (Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). Another influencing factor are our aging pool RN’s. Our average RN age is 43 and we have many nurses retiring. Half of RN’s are going to be over 50 by age 2010 and the U.S. does not have enough new nurses to replace them (Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). The third influencing factor is that 65% of our nursing graduates come from associate degree programs. This is in itself not a problem, but there are not enough nursing faculty, which must at least have a BSN degree if not an MSN degree to teach nursing. We are turning away perspective nursing students from programs because there are not nursing faculty to teach them (Roman, 2008)....

...down the street. To do this many hospitals are looking at how nurses are prepared whether it be Associate degree in nursing (ADN) or Bachelor degree in nursing (BSN) and how this affects patient outcomes. According to Hood, L. J., & Leddy, S. K. (2006) the ADN degree in nursing is a concentrated study of clinical skills at the community college level, while the BSN degree is completed at the 4-year institution, where education is focused on not only skills but also science, liberal studies, research and community health. The ADN was first introduced back in the 1940’s when after the war America found itself in a nursing shortage. Many of women who would have filled nursing positions found other jobs that were now open to them due to the war effort. During this time community colleges and hospitals started programs in which the ADN nurse spent most of their education learning technical skills, in the hospital setting many of the students were taught these skills by on the job training. This training included more practical then theory and there was no continuity in what was taught at the community college level or the hospital programs. Hood, L. J., & Leddy, S. K. (2006). To this day the average healthcare consumer cannot tell you the difference between the ADN or BSN prepared nurse. Now data is available and hospitals attempting to become magnet status or nurse friendly are realizing that the BSN prepared nurse is more versatile have better communication skills and are able...

Administrative Ethics

...There are many issues that arise when the patient privacy is concerned. In August of 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) were passed into law (Van der Aa, 2000). The law is intended to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system by standardizing how to exchange data for specific administrative and financial transactions, while protecting the security and confidentiality of that information (Van der Aa, 2000). The areas addressed for HIPPA are: • Concerns that disclosure of patient medical records could result in embarrassment, insurance declination, loss of employment, or failure to be hired in a new job; • Increasing costs of data exchange in an incompatible and often competing standards environment to exchange administrative and financial data; • Implement processes and systems to reduce fraud (Van der Aa, 2000). HIPPA was signed into law, to help create a standard that will protect patient’s medical records and personal health records. This act is to help the health care employees have more control of a patient’s information and its privacy. This act also gives the patient the right to control their own information. Apart from the right to inspect, amend and correct their confidential health information, patients now have the right to control what information can be released and to whom (Van der Aa, 2000). The following case study is an opportunity to review ethical issues relative to confidentiality. This case...

These two factors must be improved in order to keep Middlefield hospital open and running and also to make the patient happy. There were some reviews on how people with the company feel. Dr. Rusty Gates which is a internist which moved his practice to a new hospital. Dr. Gates stated that the new hospital staff appear to have more invited in quality of patient care and the patients seem to be much more happy. Eileen Wright, which is the board member of Middlefield hospital, stated that within the last 12 months Middlesex has been declining. She also stated that the director of nursing is having difficulty retaining nursing staff, which is the main problem that we are having at Middlefield hospital. This is her major concern for the company. Last, there was Anne Teaks, which is the registered nurse for Middlefield hospital. She has been with the company for 22 years. She really doesn’t like the shortage of the staff, which occurs on all the shifts. She would like to see a turn around so that the patients can get the care that they need. In order to improve this problem that we are having at Middlefield I would say that Middlefield should improve more and continue to work with schools or nursing, universities, community colleges, and high school this way we will be able to recruit potentials staff....

Nursing

...The Nurse As Advocate Michelle Guth Walden University October 9, 2012 Nursing has not always practiced advocacy; rather, it is a relatively new role for nursing emerging in the United States in the 1980s (Hanks, R. 2007). As a professional nurse it is our duty to serve as our patients advocates. They rely on us to do so. Nurses are considered the protector’s of patient’s rights. The American Nurses Association is dedicated to quality nursing and safety of the patients and this comes in the form of advocacy. By creating initiatives that increase awareness both among legislators and the general community, the ANA is able to encourage legislation on vital issues such as safe patient handling and patients' rights.  This is how the role of advocate addresses social justice. Championing social justice in the provision of health care is a core attribute of advocacy (Bu, X. & Jezewski M. 2006). The meaning of this core attribute is based on the ethics of justice and reflects the social advocacy model. This model calls for nurses to vigorously make every effort for changes on the behalf of patients, communities and humanity as a whole, so that problems are identified and corrected. Nurses need to be community advocates and be involved in issues related to the health and welfare for people. The strategies we as nurses and professional associations need to do in order to continue to push for change in health care is to promote effective communication and coordination of care. We...

Notes on Nursing Compared to Movie Attonement

...detailed account of nurses working in the hospital in the movie atonement, during the time of war shows extensive research into the nursing practices of that period. After reviewing the notes on nursing by Florence Nightingale, a lot of similarities were observed in the movie and Nightingales notes. The concepts that I would discuss here are hygiene, Noise, Petty Management and Psychological support. Hygiene According to Nightingale, the greater part of nursing is preserving cleanliness. She even says that ventilation can never freshen up the air until and unless thorough cleanliness is observed. She states that carpets should not be used and that the walls should be painted with oil paint for easy cleaning. In addition to that she mentions about the concept of patients hygiene and nurses own personal hygiene. In the movie, it has been observed that the nurses are involved in mopping the floors, scrubbing the beds, cleaning the bedpans, and hand washing. The shimmering clean hallways and patient wards all portray the importance given to the concept of cleanliness. Here, when we see the nurses, their clean and crisp uniforms, wearing of the aprons and gloves when cleaning the bedpans, meticulous hand washing, and nail trimming all reflect the significance of personal hygiene. Noise In the notes Nightingale states how noise can be disturbing for the patient. She talks about the light, firm and quick step taken by the woman, which is required by the nurses. She describes it...

Improvement in Health Assessment

...examination. The nurse must incorporate the use of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation when performing a health assessment, all which are skills learned throughout the nursing education we obtained. However, we all need to improve on certain things in our practice. After reading the assigned chapters for this week and evaluating myself as a nurse, two keys things stood out in my practice that could use some improvement. The way I listen to my patients is the first item of improvement. I have always felt confident in the way I approach someone and the way I react when I am approached about the health issues of my patients, but as I think back to the many experiences I have had as a nurse, I recognize that the way I listen to some of them is not done to the best of my ability. I have many times found myself jumping into the conversation before I have heard everything that needs to be said by the patient, therefore leading to my own back tracking of given information. I need to improve the way I listen, by first, hearing the whole topic of concern or question and then proceeding to give my help through my response. The area of nursing I work in comes with a lot of hormonal emotions after the birth of a newborn, so many times my patients just need a shoulder to cry on or in my case cry with, which is how it ends up on most occasions. With this I need to be a type of caregiver that gets down on the patient’s level and out of the authoritative level as a nurse, so to speak...

Professional, Ethical & Legal Issues in Nursing Practice

...Singapore Nursing Board Standards for Nursing Practice defines that Nurses/midwives have the professional responsibility and accountability to uphold Standard of care and to contribute to their dissemination, interpretation and development despite medical advances, social and demographic changes and an increasingly complex healthcare delivery system that challenge the ability of nurses to provide safe quality of care. Should nurses fail to uphold certain standards and by doing so cause harm or injury to the client, they would be held liable in the tort of negligence. Description of a practical situation which raised ethical issues: Mr Lim 70 years old has been hospitalised for medical treatment with the diagnosis of chronic heart failure. He was ordered intravenous therapy by Dr Peter the medical resident. Nurse Su questions the order because it is for an infusion of Dextrose 50%. Dr Peter tells her that he checked it with Dr Lee, the medical officer. Nurse Su checks it with Nurse May before administration. Later, Mr Lim has a cardiac arrest and suffers extensive brain damage as a result of the infusion. The hospital inquiry is held and it determined that the correct infusion would be Dextrose 5%. Mr Lim’s family members are very upset and seek legal advice. All names mentioned in the above scenario are pseudonym. ...there are three different pathways to become a registered nurse. The three pathways include; the baccalaureate degree program, associate degree program, and the diploma program. All of these pathways allow the student to take the NCLEX-RN and become a registered nurse. What is the difference between the programs and student outcomes if all the students end up with the same licensure? The difference is the technical nurse versus the professional nurse. This paper will focus on the difference in competencies between nurses prepared at the associate-degree level versus the baccalaureate-degree level in nursing. "The existence of multiple pathways contributes to a confusing landscape of nursing education and creates challenges for aspiring nurses as they try to choose the most appropriate type of program in which to enter the profession" (book reference). The associate and baccalaureate programs are available to anyone who wishes to pursue a career in nursing, but the two programs prepare two different types of nurses. The associate degree level nurse is more focused on task oriented practice and are more technical driven and clinically competent. On the other hand, the baccalaureate degree level nurse is more professional and use evidence based practice and advanced critical thinking skills. Also, the baccalaureate degree level nurse is prepared to be in a leadership and management role versus the associate degree level nurse who is more geared towards bedside care. “Baccalaureate...

Personal Philosophy of Nursing

...Amber Hawn Mr. Professor Pascoe Comp 1 12, September 2012 Personal Philosophy of Nursing The American Nurses Association defines nursing as, “protection, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of the individuals, families, communities, and populations.” (American Nurses Association, 2004, p. 7) There is a lot of work in nursing. There are lot of cores, focuses, visions, and philosophies of nursing. In my opinion there are a lot of cores of nursing. So, I will be discussing a few different cores of nursing. One core of nursing is delivering quality care to the needs of the patients and families. You can do this through education, teaching and listening. The second core of nursing is patient education. “Patient teaching regardless of what medical condition or injury a patient is being treated for the success of the recovery process will be greatly affected by how well educated the patient is about what they are suffering from. (Right Health Community, 2008) Nurses should teach the patient about medications, and how to manage their daily living. The last core of nursing is love and passion for others. Why is one in nursing if they do not have love and passion for others? Without love and passion, patient outcomes are affected. You can show love and passion in a variety of ways. One way of showing love and passion could be taking the time to talk to a patient...

Burn Out Critical Case Analysis

...Critical Incident Analysis: Burnout syndrome It was my 11th week of clinical in tertiary care hospital. On that day, I had experienced an incident that I would like to reflect upon. I was assigned to a female patient with diagnose of third stage breast cancer. After taking her interview, I came to know that patient and even their family member didn’t know any thing about the patient prognosis and they were too worried to know about. For that reason, I went to doctor and inquired that whether doctor had told them about the patient prognosis or not. In response to my question, doctor got irritated and replied in a very rude manner. He said, “you want me to tell patient that when he would gone to die? Or how much life is remaining for him… six month or less then that?” why should I be bothered? Let the family deal with it. I have other number of tasks. On hearing that comment, I got astonished and remained silent in front of him. After some time, he again probe that we don’t get enough time to explain each and every patient about their diagnosis and prognosis and if we take such type of tension related to patient’s health status, one day we get burst out. After coming across this situation, several kinds of feelings came in my mind. First of all, I felt very strange on hearing that discourteous response of doctor.
