Nursemaid’s elbow is a condition of dislocation of radius, a bone in the elbow. When the bone gets slipped out of its normal position at the elbow point, it is termed as dislocation. Nursemaid’s elbow may occur when the children are pulled up too hard by the wrist or hand. When the children are lifted up by one of the arms, they may get affected with Nursemaid’s elbow. Complication of dislocation of radius may be the child would face limitation in moving the arms. If dislocation of radius is not treated, the child may have to face it permanently.

Symptoms and Causes

Children suffering from nursemaid’s elbow start crying after getting affected with the injury. Due to elbow pain, children refuse to use their arms. Some children stop crying after the pain goes away but they refuse to move elbow. Children move their shoulders but not their elbows. Children may be holding their arms slightly bent at the elbow. Children may be pressing it up against abdominal area.

There can be many causes that may lead to dislocated radius in the child. For example, jerking a child’s arm, pulling the child up by hand, breaking a fall with the arm, swinging a toddler by arms and rolling over in an awkward way are some of the actions that may cause dislocation of radius.
