The Footprint of a Nursing Home Leader

...The Footprint of a Nursing Home Leader Many of us promised our parents that we wouldn't ever put them in a nursing home.  Reality is that more than 3 million Americans rely on services provided by nursing homes at some point during a year and 1.4 million of these reside in the Nation’s 15,800 nursing homes on any given day (Bonner, 2013). In my position as Vice President of Operations with a publically traded healthcare company, I support twelve nursing homes. One such nursing home is a 194-bed for-profit Center that provides post-acute, rehabilitative, skilled nursing, and short and long-term care services. This Center is located in Texas approximately 5 miles from the border of Mexico. In an effort to support the Centers’ mission to “Make a Difference – Every Day, Every Time,” there are six key objectives vital to success: 1. Culture: Maintain a productive and positive employee environment. 2. Care: Provide quality care so residents may achieve their optimum level of functioning thus living an improved quality of life. 3. Census: Anticipate community health needs and develop business partnerships that help improve market share. 4. Cash: Ensure timely and effective collections. 5. Cost: Control operation costs. 6. Compliance: Comply with regulatory requirements. Strong leadership is essential for this Center to successfully reach its key objectives. While the leadership at this Center has a history of consistently attaining key objectives...

Elder Abuse in Nursing Home

...were abused or neglected (Wallace, 2005). While the majority of abuse happens in the home by a family member, there is a rise in the amount of elderly abuse being reported in nursing homes. In 2000, states were asked to indicate the number of elder abuse reports received from nursing homes. Based on figures from 54 states, the total number of reports was 472,813 (Teaster, 2003). A study prepared by the minority staff of the Special Investigations Division of the House Government Reform Committee found that 30% of nursing homes in the United States, 5,283 facilities, were cited for almost 9,000 instances of abuse from 1999 to 2001 (Waxman, 2001). The report stated that 1,601 of these instances could have or did cause the resident serious injury or death. The instances reported ranged from physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, bedsores, inadequate medical care, malnutrition, dehydration, preventable accidents, inadequate sanitation and hygiene. Some other shocking finds of the report were that more than 40% of the abuse violations were not reported until formal complaints was brought by residents or family members. 1,327 of the nursing homes were cited more than once for abuse violations during this two year period, 305 were cited for three or more violations and 192 were cited for five or more abuse violations (Waxman, 2001). If you have an elderly parent of relative in a nursing facility there are signs to look for to determine if your loved one is being properly...

Nursing Homes

...Generally, a nursing home is a residential facility offering daily living assistance to individuals who are physically or mentally unable to live independently. Residents are provided rooms, meals, assistance with daily living, and in most cases, some medical treatment. The U.S. nursing homes and long-term care facilities industry includes about 80,000 establishments (single-location companies and branches of multi-location companies) with combined annual revenue of about $210 billion. The severe shortage of nursing assistants, home health and home care aides, and other paraprofessional workers is the primary trend influencing the current wave of concern about the long-term care workforce. National data on turnover rates show wide variation, depending on the source of the data: One source suggests that turnover rates average about 45 percent for nursing homes and about 10 percent for home health programs, while other data place average annual nursing home turnover at over 100 percent per year. High rates of staff vacancies and turnover have negative effects on providers, consumers, and workers: The cost to providers of replacing workers is high; quality of care may suffer; and workers in understaffed environments may suffer higher rates of injury. The future availability of front-line workers does not look promising. There will be an unprecedented increase in the size of the elderly population as the “baby boom” generation ages. This is why questions such as, nursing-home growth,...

Nursing Home Abuse

...Nursing Home Abuse Nursing homes are meant to be a safe haven for the elderly to cared for in their golden years and instead of become a nightmare for a lot who have been subjected to countless acts of abuse and neglect. Furthermore, the significant others of those in nursing homes are subjected to highly stressful conditions by having to meet harsh economic requirements. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, there are nearly 17,000 nursing homes in the United States that currently care for 1.6 million residents, a figure expected to quadruple to 6.6 million residents by 2050. In past years, there have been reports that nearly 1/3 of all nursing homes have been cited for abuse violations. Each year the number of incidents increases while there is a significant underreporting of nursing home abuse and neglect. More than twice as many nursing homes were cited for abuse in 2006 and with numbers expected to quadruple these numbers are going to rise. Reports show that there are thousands upon thousands of abuse cases yearly and investigators believe many violations go undetected or are simply not reported, leading federal regulations to believe the problem is underestimated. Even when serious issues have been identified federal and state enforcement policies have not been effective in ensuring that the issues are corrected and remain corrected. The first issue I have found with abuse of the elderly in nursing homes is economic. Medicaid and Medicare which cover...

Nursing Home Crisis

...Nursing Home Crisis Many may not understand what goes on at a nursing home. They think that it is easy work just taking care of the basic needs of a resident. As for the time that I have been a nurse aide I have found how hard of work being a nurse aide is and how much many nursing home forget the importance of meeting the basic needs of their residents. You would think that this would be the most important aspect that all nursing homes must meet, but just like every other business a nursing home is also money base, it is not charity. Many times in this hard economy nursing homes have to make cuts, and unfortunately they are cutting all in the wrong places. Many times office jobs in the nursing home are the last to be cut and the nurse aides are the first to be cut, and the reason being is because many states do not have laws stating the aide to resident ratio. Today, a local nursing home has just got a new hope in recovering the problem of the loss of success that their nursing home has encountered. They have begun to cut nurse aides and have begun to run the halls short-handed, unfortunately their complaints have went up and their residents have become very unhappy. The nursing home has now decided to fire the current administrator and hire a new administrator in hope for new ideas and better success for their nursing home. Although the new administrator has many difficult problems to solve she has a lot of faith in recovering the problem the nursing home is now encountering...

Nursing Home Reimbursement Analysis

...term care systems, Medicaid has complained about reimbursements have been lower and if they become lower than quality car would suffer. However, if states set Medicaid nursing home reimbursement levels and the federal government make changes also think the quality of care will come down or suffer. The withdrawal of services will affect quality, if they are not covered or no longer funded than these services will no longer be provided. It seems that no matter what the reimbursement levels are it does not affect the quality of care given by the staff. The quality of care is still there, the options for seniors for long-term care types are independent living, retirement communities, care retirement communities, senior apartments, continuing care and nursing homes. Assisted living communities are for those seniors that can no longer live alone but do not need the care that nursing homes provide. Nurse Shortage in Nursing Homes

...Nurse Shortage in Nursing Homes Nursing shortages have been an issue in the health care field for a few years now. This shortage is seriously impacting nursing homes and the elderly in our society today. With a shortage of 8.1% of nurses in 2008, it is important to understand what is happening to nurses (Addressing the Nursing Shortage, 2010). To help one understand the nurse shortage more, this paper will discuss resource scarcity, stakeholders, economic flows, changes in supply and demand, pricing decisions, along with a business proposal. The business proposal will discuss where the market has a shortage of providers, list of services the firm will provide, explanations of set prices, and who will be hired and how much one will be paid. Resource Scarcity and Stakeholders Economic Flows According to Jacobs & Rapoport, “Economic flows can involve both money and services.” There are a couple of economic flows that could affect the nursing home and the nursing shortage. The first would be how the nursing home provides health care to the elderly. If the firm does not provide good service to the patients and customers, most nurses and patients would not want to stay at the nursing home. The second economic flow that could affect a nursing home is money. If the nursing home does not have the right amount of money, patients are not going to get the service they require. The same could be said about the nursing shortage in nursing homes. If the money is not there, then the nurses...

How Can Telehealth Improve Patient Safety in Nursing Homes

...Wesley D. Pointjour Final Research Paper: Telehealth In Nursing Homes Health Quality Management April 02, 2015 Introduction In many nursing home facilities, patient safety is little to non-existent and if they are, there displayed on a need be and not obliged basis. They are displayed case by case rather than nursing home protocol. Even with changes in regulations, reporting systems, and documentation over the past couple of years, the nursing home industry still has its share of problems. Patient safety is meant to provide patients freedom from healthcare associated preventable harm, meaning when things go right, nothing bad happens. Nursing home organizations have been constantly trying to improve their reputation and the way people view them, but how? Don’t patients make up a nursing home? What about their safety? Shouldn’t we start there? How do we make improvements? Telehealth, a new approach to improving patient safety in nursing homes, will use telecommunication technologies to deliver health related services and information that support patient care, administrative activities, and health education (Dixon, Hook, McGowan, 2008). In this paper I will explore the major benefits of Telehealth and how its implications can improve patient safety in nursing home care. What is Telehealth and why is it important? Telehealth is the means and methods to improving access to care and reducing healthcare associated costs. It is also a system that can be used for education...

Modern Management of Today’s Nursing Homes

...------------------------------------------------- Modern Management of Today’s Nursing Homes Connor Watson Sociology of Organizations 12/15/2015 Final Research Paper Introduction The Silver Tsunami is coming, and because of this, there will be more elderly people entering into nursing homes and the available labor force in the United States will decrease. This idea appear may be shocking to anyone reading this, but to me, it is incredibly important information because I want to be an Administrator of a nursing home myself one day. I decided that I wanted to study how these facilities operate, especially since I have not yet done my internship work and decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to take an early look inside the industry. I hope to discover through my research an answer to the question: “how have nursing homes adapted new technologies to minimize the costs and risks of day-to-day operations?”. For my research I used two theoretical frameworks that work together in many aspects. The first framework that I chose was Risk Management. I am interested in how nursing homes prevent risks and what they do in the case of accidents. I would argue that in these facilities, risk factors are everywhere; knowing how they control any situation that has a chance of putting the patient in harm’s way is very telling of how the industry is run. The other framework that I have incorporated is the development of technology in the nursing home. In an effort to deliver better care and services...

Elders in a Nursing Home

...A Day in the Life of an Elder in a Nursing Home Bailey A Walker Ivy Tech Community College Nursing homes and convalescent centers have often received a bad reputation throughout the years. Some of these negative stereotypes were perhaps well earned, even though they unfairly placed this negative light on well managed and caring nursing homes. This certainly is the case for Salem Crossing nursing home where I volunteered. During my time at Salem Crossing I was able to learn the types of people that resided there, the reasons they are there, as well as the daily routine that one goes through while living in a nursing home. There are many different groups of people who need the assistance of a nursing home. Elders that have to live their life in a nursing home are normally physically and mentally disabled people who need 24-hour care and cannot live on their own. They live in a home with around 100 other residents that have a variety of needs. Typically they eat all of their meals there while also participating in some forms of therapy and rehabilitation. Full time nurses are there to administer their medications daily. Most nursing homes are located in towns that have a hospital nearby in case of an emergency. According to Foundation Aiding the Elderly, “nearly 6 percent of older adults are living in a nursing home,” (History of Nursing Homes). There are different types of rooms and lengths of stays available for a nursing home and your medical needs. For instance, A Place...
