...Western Governors University Nursing Informatics Nut 1 Task 2   It is often times a question as to how we, as healthcare professionals, can go about strengthening and bettering the quality of care that we provide to our patients. There are a number of ways to do that, including purposeful rounding, treating patients as a whole rather than just diagnoses, providing family and patient centered care, etc. One important action that can be taken to better the quality of care is through the use of our ever changing, always advancing, technology. Years ago, when computer systems did not exist, we did what we could to provide the best care we could, with the most efficient communication, charting, etc. Today, with the use of our advancing technology, we have the ability to use computerized management systems for efficiency, proficiency, and increased quality of care. The various aspects of using computerized management systems in the healthcare setting, including the efficiency, privacy, and cost will be discussed. How Computerized Management Systems Increase Quality of Care It is not easy to give up old habits and pick up new ones and it is certainly not easy to do that in the healthcare setting when people's lives are under our control. Computerized management systems are the use of technological advances such as computers and handheld devices to gather and input data on each patient entering and exiting your care. The use of this technology allows us, as physicians, nurses...

Nursing Informatics Task #1

...Task 724.4.2-01-05 Discuss an original presentation to introduce the new EMR system to staff on you unit. In your Presentation: 1. Discuss how access to information is important to the delivery of nursing care, specifically how the EMR system will benefit nurses in their work with Pt’s. Hello everyone. My name is John Smith. I am a RN here at the Hospital and I am the Director of Nursing Informatics. As I’m sure all of you know to be successful in the care of our Patients you have to work as an interdisciplinary team and timely COMMUNICATION is key! As you can see I have capitalized communication to emphasize how important it is. As a Nurse on the unit a big part of communication is reporting a patient’s condition after you have assessed and treated them. This is not only done verbally be talking to the Attending MD, Consulting MD’s Patients and their Family members, but also documenting this in the Pt’s legal medical record. Without effective, accurate and timely documentation of all aspects of a Patients care by the multiple disciplines taking care of the Patients you can have severe consequences including and up to death of the patient. I’m here to discuss the implementation of the EMR system we will be going live with next month. For those of you who don’t know what EMR stands for it means “Electronic Medical Record”. I do not want you to feel intimidated by having to use a computer for those of you who don’t use one often or at all. We will be training all of...

...Technology: How It Applies To Nursing Informatics Cindy Burrus Partlow Kaplan University MN502-01 Theoretical Foundations of Advanced Nursing March 15, 2015 Technology: How It Applies To Nursing Informatics These days we take technology for granted – it is just there. We turn on the computer and are instantly attached to the Internet, free to peruse at our leisure, doing the latest Google search to find the answer to a nagging question. Technology has also been a boon in the world of medicine. Healthcare institutions are coming into the age of technology by implementing electronic health records (EHR) within clinics and hospitals. This paper will take the concept of technology and explore the meaning and affect to healthcare, and how it will affect nursing in general. Technology Relating to Healthcare In the healthcare arena, technology has made medical advances occur at an astounding rate. On a federal level, the executive and legislative branches of the federal government have launched initiatives to encourage the spread of health information technology. This came into play when the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) was signed into law on February 17, 2009, to promote the adoption and meaningful use of health information technology (HHS.gov, n.d.). The act stipulates that, as of 2011, healthcare providers will be offered financial incentives for demonstrating meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs). Incentives will...
