...Reflections of the Diversity and Leadership in Nursing INTRODUCTION For many years, people tended to think of nurses as one homogenous group. Nurses were expected to be able to take care of problems in whatever circumstances they were presented. Things have changed, today, nurses are increasingly having the choice of specializing and branching out to other fields in nursing. Nurses have the diversity to continually educate themselves and raise their level of knowledge. Mary O’ Connor, explored the art of the nine dimensions of nursing leadership and the relationship between the nine dance metaphors. In this paper, I am going to explore one of the nine dimensions . I chose of diversity as a vehicle toward wholeness, and reflect on my own story of diversity and what I believe is a good nurse leader. The first ethical dilemma presented was between a parent's religious beliefs and wanted the safety of their daughter to be left to God and what was ethically and legally the responsibility of the hospital. The parents wanted limited medication and medical assistance for their daughter. The limited use of medication caused the labor to be prolonged and was starting to put the fetus in distress. The nursing supervisor had to determine when to intervene so that mother and fetus would continue to safe, and the mother could have a healthy delivery. The fist steps were to determine whom the stakeholders were and how any decision made by the supervisor would affect each of them. Determining what ethical lens was being used and how to use that lens would ultimately determine how to solve the dilemma. The rights and responsibility lens were used. ...Communication is a major component of the nursing profession. A problem that is common in the facility where I work is ineffective communication in the workplace. Ineffective communication in the nursing profession could potentially have a negative effect on nurses as well as the patients that are cared for on a daily basis. One example of ineffective communication that often comes to mind is in giving report from one unit to another. It is imperative to give a clear, concise report on your patient to others that may be involved in their care. So many times, when a patient is being transferred, report is called and given to one nurse. Many times the nurse who receives the report may not even be the nurse who will be caring for the patient. When this occurs, it is extremely easy for orders to be misunderstood, important parts of the patient’s history to be missed and allergies that are miscommunicated.
