Changing Healthcare Trends

...CHANGING HEATHCARE TRENDS Health Promotion: Changing Healthcare Trends Marla K. Clement Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V 11/8/2011   Health Promotion: Changing Healthcare Trends A trend recognized in today’s healthcare setting is that of a shift from professional dictation to patient directed healthcare. An emphasis on the treatment of disease, which was highly successful in the past, is not the answer for today's healthcare needs. Today, patient education is the primary focus with the emphasis on prevention of disease by screening for risk factors and encouraging patients to practice behaviors that foster good health. In the past patients would seek medical care only after symptoms had developed that interfered with their lifestyle. Todays’ trend reflects patients taking a proactive approach to preventing a disease after they have been exposed to the education through mass media such as commercials, the internet, or brochures obtained from clinics or physicians’ offices. With the advances in technology medical professionals are able to reach far more people than in the past. This technology has given professional nurses the ability to encourage more patients to improve their health while fostering positive behavioral changes, referred to as health promotion. Health promotion is defined as the process of empowering patients to improve their health while fostering behavioral, cognitive and emotional activities as to advocate health and well-being of the population...

Health promotion does not include education alone. It consists of proactive decision making taken by individuals, families, and communities to promote and sustain an optimal level of health. Health promotion can be broken down into two parts, active and passive. In passive health promotion, the individual is not actively participating. An example of passive health promotion would be government regulation, including FDA approvals or sanitation programs. Active health promotion involves the individual actively participating. Active health promotion would include an individual choosing to eat a proper, healthy diet or performing daily exercises. Health Promotion

...Running head: HEALTH PROMOTION 1 Levels of Health Promotion Latha Verson Grand Canyon University Health promotion, also known as prevention, has always been prevalent in health care. It has always been considered better to stop an illness from occurring rather than treating it once it has. But that is not the extent of health promotion. Health promotion is the provision of information and education of individuals and families (Unknown, 2012). As stated by the World Health Organization, health promotion seeks to give an individual control over their health. In health promotion, the actions taken are not limited to just individuals, but also extends to the community, environment etc (Unknown, 2012). Prevention also involves taking control of the determinants of health like the community, economics, environment (Unknown, 2012). Every state, county, town, has its own different approaches to health promotion. But mainly, they revolve around improving personal health, clean environment, strong community and better personal skills (Unknown, 2012). Health promotion is extremely important in the nursing field. Nurses are usually the primary care givers in a medical setting and have direct contact with the patients. Nurses can spread the message that prevention is better than the cure. They can bring across the point that prevention is more cost effective and can provide a better life for patients. They can help to prevent diseases from occurring and spreading and can advocate...
