...to spend so much time and effort to re-locate an old building on its campus, and, - Why the Nusserwanjee Building? The answers to these questions can be linked to the day, May 1, 1991, when twelve prominent architects of the city brain-stormed at the Indus Valley School to evolve a design criteria for its new campus. The school had just acquired a plot and since it was the first time that a custom–designed campus for an Art and Architecture institution was being built in Pakistan, it was expected the brain-storming would generate some fresh, innovative, ideas. Interestingly however, the consensus at the end of the day, reached, perhaps half in jest, was that an ideal environment for a school of art is in and around an old building, and that the School should find such a building and move into it! Hardly a week later, Shahid Abdulla, one of the founders of the Indus Valley School, excitedly called to say he had found a beautiful old building, right in the heart of Kharadar, which was for sale and about to be demolished. Before one could express one’s reservations about the location, he quickly added, “We will save it and move it to the campus in Clifton.” What he had seen was the hundred-year-old Nusserwanjee Building, a stone structure in two blocks of three and four storeys with large halls and high ceilings, originally used as warehouse and offices – ideal spaces for art and design studios. If this building was to be transplanted at the new campus, the school would...

...RELOCATION OF NUSSERWANJEE BUILDING It used to be in the heart of old Karachi, but now the Nusserwanjee Building stands not far from Karachi’s sea edge. This is the miracle of South Asia’s very first building-relocation project. One can’t but marvel at the idea that this century-old stone structure, which is in two blocks of three and four storeys with large halls and high ceilings, is at the campus of the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. The very first step in the relocation effort was through documentation of the building, which was carried out by detailed measured drawings and photographs. Then, considering the seismic zone of Karachi and the fact that the soil stratum at the new site near the sea was a reclaimed sandy beach as opposed to the firm land at the original location, some special measures were introduced. The decision to introduce iron columns was an innovative one as these now support the floor slabs for all four floors, including the mezzanine. Detailed identification of all the material was done and each stone, piece of timber etc., properly marked prior to the dismantling which commenced in April 1995, stone by stone, piece by piece, and completed within three months. The procedure involved the careful removal of each piece of timber and stone which was then tagged permanently for identification, carried to the ground floor, stacked temporarily, loaded on the trucks for transportation to the Clifton site, unloaded and re-arranged according to a...

...Nusserwanjee Building Relocation Introduction: The Nusserwanjee Building Project is unique in the architectural history of the subcontinent. The Nusserwanjee Building is a 100 year old Kharadar landmark, named after Karachi philanthropist, Jamshed Nusserwanjee (Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta, philanthropist, theosophist, the first mayor, the architect and father of modern Karachi). Today, it has been relocated, stone by stone, to become a part of the IVS campus. History: The Nusserwanjee Building was originally constructed in 1903 by Jamshed’s father, Nusserwanjee Rustomji Mehta, as warehouse and offices of Nusserwanjee and Co., a very prosperous trading and manufacturing enterprise. An additional wing was constructed in 1919, using R.C.C. for columns, beams and roof, the latest construction technology then prevalent, and plastered rubble stone and coursed stone masonry. The building’s new history, so to speak, begins in 1991 the year Indus Valley was born. That year, 12 prominent architects of the city brainstormed for the evolution of a design for the campus of the new institution. A few weeks later, Shahid Abdullah, one of the founders of the Indus Valley, found the beautiful old Nusserwanjee building, then used as a warehouse and for offices, which was for sale in other words it was to be demolished. What followed was...

...there would be enough dimensional lumber to get you to the moon and back six times. Clearly something needs to be done about new construction, remodeling and demolition because of the major negative effects the results are having on the planet Earth. Land resources and the environment are affected by all forms of construction activities. The environment is impacted directly, with regard to the actual tract of land affected and the immediately surrounding area (Yeang, 1999). Moreover, there are various indirect impacts which result from construction activities with wide ranging ecological, social and economic outcomes. These consequences have traditionally been negative, with land resources destroyed in the aspiration of development of buildings and infrastructure. Therefore, it is clear that issues relating to the environment and natural resources are irrefutably linked to construction processes. Construction is the assembling of components or materials together in order to make a structure for a particular purpose – such as providing shelter for...

...controlled environment. Students of CEC from IIM Raipur created and conceptualized a simulation game, REAL-TY-COON. The main objective of the game is to replicate real life scenario of construction business. The game is based on the concept of demand and supply and how market prices of products are determined. The game consisted of 5 set of teams. 4 set of teams played the role of suppliers and 1 played the role of builders. The division of teams was done as follows: Team Type | Teams | No. of Players | Builders | 5 | 4 | Cement Suppliers | 3 | 2 | Sand Suppliers | 3 | 2 | Stone Suppliers | 3 | 2 | Steel Suppliers | 3 | 2 | The game has 5 rounds. In each round, builders have to build a specific building allocated to them. To build any of the buildings, they have to buy adequate amount of cement, stone, steel and sand from the suppliers. They will be provided with fixed initial amount of cash. Builders can approach bank to get additional cash at a fixed rate of 10% which will be applicable for that round only, carrying forward loan for each extra round will attract an additional 5% rate per round. In case the builders are not able to get a deal from the suppliers in the stipulated time, they need to purchase the required materials by the bank at a fixed rate which might be higher as compared to the market prices. The suppliers will be provided with fixed inventory at the beginning of the game. The Cost Price of the materials will be disclosed only to the suppliers...

...people are what nick said they were or will they will turn out to be “The Eyes”. I look at one of them across from me; he looked back. We’re taking you to the eyes headquarters; you’re assigned a room number when we get there. He says. Despite the fear I was in, I nodded. Nick lied to me; these people weren’t Mayday, their “The Eyes”. Why would nick do this? This is something I will never know, it’s too late to do anything about it. After what seems to be two hours the van finally comes to a stop. I was expecting the worse to come. The double doors open, they take me by the elbows once again to help me out, it seemed to be around dawn time. There were about five buildings labeled with numbers. They lead me to building number two; there were other handmaids that look like they were captured by the eye. Entering the building I felt anxiety, I questioned myself what was going to happen to me? Does this mean I go straight to the colonies? Am I going to be tortured? Instead they put me in a waiting room for now. Minutes later a woman steps into the room. You’re another one of them that just don’t listen. You’re assigned room 220. She said. I nodded. She took me to my room and closed the door. The room smells of mothballs, or is that odor death. I sat on the bed observing the room, there was a window cracked open. I thought to myself this will be a perfect...

...My ideal house My ideal house would cost a great many thousands of dollars and therefore, even if I am very successful in life, I do not suppose that I shall possess it for a very long time. However there is no harm in dreaming, especially if the dream provides the driving force to turn fantasy into fact. As I live in Singapore, i would like my ideal house to be situated either on one of the residential estates, right outside the bustle of the city center, or on one of the coast roads so that the cool breezes from the ever beautiful China sea could waft through my windows. Wherever my house was, it would stand in it sown grounds so that I would not, on any side, be over-looked by neighbors. The gardens, with which it would be surrounded would be very beautiful, full of colorful tropical flowers; orchids and canna lilies and with many glowing flowering shrubs such as bougainvillaea and frangipani. There would be tall leafy trees for shade and underneath them, my private swimming bath would be built, where we could relax and swim in the heat of the day. there would be pleasant paths winding through the green grass and comfortable seats where my family and I could rest, when the day's toil was over. The house itself would be built of white stone which is both cool and weather-proof. It would be on two storeys, because I like the habit of sleeping upstairs. It would embody features from both the Eastern and Western worlds. In front of it, I would have a large path with...

...To Mr., I would like to interest you in a business proposition. I have a land venture that I would love for you to invest in with me. Your investment money would help me purchase the property and the materials needed to build the homes on them. I will then turn around to sell them for a very high profit that we will share in. The property I have in mind to purchase is in Florida. The land is dirt cheap since it is located in the swamps. Of course, we won’t tell that to the buyers. I will be doing a lot of the selling online so that the prospective suckers (I mean buyers) will be none the wiser. I will be building one house impeccably the others will be made cheaply. The first home will be the bait home, of course. My cousin owns a construction company and has cheap laborers and knows how to cut corners for the rest of the homes so that the buyers are none the wiser. With the money we save off of the cheap labor, homes, plus the very cheap land, we will increase our money by over 400% mark up value. We can also, have a secondary business going to get rid of the alligators off the property once the buyers figure out that they are there. So the money will just keep rolling in. If you are interesting investing in this lucrative deal please get a hold of me. Sincerely, Your...

...window and $250, he only has a window. Consequently, the glazier’s gain of business is the tailor’s loss of business. No new employment has been added. A new window will be seen in the next day or two. But the suit will not because it will not be made. This fallacy can be related to a modern-day situation. When a city decides to employ its city workers or a construction firm to rebuild some sidewalks, it may feel that it is increasing the beautification of the city while also employing some individuals. However, by choosing to remodel the public sidewalk, the city is forgoing leaving it as it is and instead building on empty land or an abandoned property. This would not only employ the construction workers for the duration of the construction (which is sure to last longer than building a sidewalk), but also the increased number of people that will be employed at the new building. The impact of this is will be felt much greater by not only the city but also the economy as a whole. The choice to build the sidewalks instead results in a loss of...

...plaintiff damages only against James Sullivan and the Keyman's Club in the amount of $3,000. From this judgment these two defendants appeal. They contend that the plaintiff failed to prove, as she was required to prove in order to recover under the statute, that she was lawfully present on the defendants' premises and that she did not provoke the dog to attack. Alternatively the defendants contend that the amount of the damage award is not supported by the evidence. The plaintiff suffered her injuries in the Keyman's Club building, 4721 West Madison Street in the City of Chicago. Located on the lower level and on the first and second stories of this building were the following: a bowling alley, a barber shop, a cocktail lounge, banquet and meeting rooms, a ballroom and various other businesses and offices. ...I. Computer Dynamics Computer Dynamics is a microcomputer software development company that has a 300-computer network. The company is located in three adjacent five-story buildings in an office park, with about 100 computers in each building. Each building is approximately 90 feet long by 50 feet wide. They are set about 100 feet apart. The current network is poorly design for its current needs and must be completely replaced. Describe the network you would recommend and how it would be configured with the goal of building a new network that will support the company’s needs for the next 3 years with few additional investments. Figure 11.16 provides a list of equipment and costs you can use to build your network. You will need to make some assumptions, so be sure to document your assumptions and explain why you have designed the network in this way. We need 5 switches has 24 ports each in each floor to create the access layer of the network and also we need 100 Cat 5 cables in each floor to connect the computer to the switches. All the switches in the four floors are connected to core layer 3 switch using fiber optic cable to handle this huge number of connection. creating Vlans on each access layer switches to give privileges to each group of users can reduce the process in the core switches. then we can create a link between the core switch and the router. The router have T3 wan interface and connection with ISP pop to provide 44.370 Mbps can be pretty good for 300 users...

...shape. All types of bricks can used for construction or some decorative function. Bricks are one of the longest lasting and strongest material used in construction throughout history. Bricks are stacked together by using mortar to make a permanent structure in a building. For example the wall of a building. Today I will present about 3 types of bricks that normally used in construction. There are mud bricks, burned bricks and cement bricks.Without wasting time, let me start my first point , mud bricks. Mud bricks are made by mixture of sticky clay and sand. The mixture will press into a mould. Then , the mud will left to dry slowly under the sun .This process will taking around 25 days. After that, the bricks are ready to use. The mud bricks are very economical and sound environmentally. These bricks are made by using natural materials and require so little of energy to produce. They are sun dried and simply manufactured. These bricks also very good in fire resistance. A standard mud brick wall can last 4 hours of fire hitting. The uses of mud bricks. They are used for construction and build. They are suitable used for construction of fire rated walls within buildings. The Great Mosque of Djenne in Mali is one of the building built by mud bricks. After that let me proceed to my second point, Burned Bricks. The burned bricks is almost same like the mud bricks and also made by clay and sand. The mixture will put into a mould. Then the sample will put into a kiln to dry it. These bricks...
