O’Brien uses an alternate persona to really convey his purpose through a misleading type of diction. From the very start, O’Brien immediately informs the reader that his daughter, Kathleen, was not actually there and that he wants to enter a make-believe scenario in which she was, so maybe, for this once, he can really express what has been bottled inside him.”I want to pretend she’s a grown up”, and “want to tell her exactly what happened” (125), are both prominent quotes, that are, in a way, foreshadowing that he is about to wander into sketchy waters. By saying these things about his daughter, it really sets up the chapter to be read in a different form that portrays the meaning in a different way as well. It makes the reader want to sympathize to the author, because it implies he is trying to explain something touchy to his daughter. He explains and describes the fear of removing the pin from the grenade like the soul was removed from the body of the man he killed, It was,”not a matter of life or death” he said, and he was in no real peril he also described. So then it increases the concern that the reader has while reading,”Ambush”, because while he is now claiming that he had no intention of killing the man, along with that he also brings a sense of justification. Justification is always used to prove someone’s point, or to back up their action. This implies he used his point of view as an innocent way of hiding his true, concrete feelings, but we, as readers, harness O’Brien’s denunciation of himself regarding to the death of the man he killed. ...Tim O’Brien lies to his daughter when she asked, “You keep writing war stories,” said, “so I guess you must’ve killed somebody.” He lied to her to hide the truth about his war life feeling that she was too young to hear about these talk surrounding the Vietnam War. He firmly believes that his daughter will ask him this question again once she grows and I do agree with it. I think that his daughter, Kathleen, will ask him again once she comes to an age when she understands what situation push her to take actions.
