In 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were given the authority to conduct inspections of the workplace. The administration performs these checks to verify that organizations and businesses adhere to the standards, guidelines, and requirements issued by the administration to ensure safe workplaces (OSHA Inspections, 2002). To be proactive instead of reactive, I am drafting a plan that should be carried out should a compliance officer visits our organization to conduct an investigation. The plan will outline the organization's rights and responsibilities. The plan will present detailed guidance and the specific procedures to prepare the safety managers and upper management for an inspection. This will include what …show more content…
Citations notify the organization the regulations and standards that were violated. They also give us information on the approximate amount of time it takes to correct the purported hazards. There is a long list of penalties that may be proposed. In response to those citations and penalties the organization has 15 days to present a written objection to the administration. The Area Director will forward the objections to the Occupational Safety Health Review Commission (OSHRC). This organization does not work directly with OSHA (OSHA Inspections, 2002). Our organization also has the right to ask for an unofficial, off-the-record, or confidential meeting with the Area Director to review the case. Our organization also has the right to petition for modification of abatement. The petition has to have a detailed plan that shows the administration the necessary steps taken to reach compliance. Any additional time needed to achieve compliance must be cited throughout this period (OSHA Inspections, 2002). A copy of the petition must be posted at each of the places where a violation happened. The petition has to be available for everyone to see. Our organization has to confirm this to OSHA. Safety managers need to ensure all these things happen. The person who represented the company during the investigation will also receive a copy of the petition. The organization could also dispute the abatement period, citation, or a proposed penalty. Again, the organization must submit the notice to challenge to the OSHA Area Director within 15 days.
