Star Wars

...Episode IV: A New Hope Far off in a distant galaxy, the starship belonging to Princess Leia, a young member of the Imperial Senate, is intercepted in the course of a secret mission by a massive Imperial Star Destroyer. An imperial boarding party blasts its way onto the captured vessel, and after a fierce firefight the crew of Leia’s ship is subdued. The dark, forbidding figure of Darth Vader appears, brutally interrogating the crew and ordering his stormtroopers to search the ship for the secret documents he believes it is carrying: the technical readouts for the Empire’s mightiest weapon—a planet-sized battle station called the Death Star. In the confusion, Princess Leia slips away and hides the secret documents, as well as a recorded plea for help, in the memory of R2-D2, a maintenance droid (robot). Leia is taken prisoner, but R2 gets away in an escape pod, along with his best friend, the protocol droid C-3PO. After crash-landing on the planet below, a barren, desert world called Tatooine, the droids set off in search of civilization but soon quarrel over the way to go. R2 insists that he has a mission to perform, but C-3PO wants no part of such an adventure. The two droids go their separate ways but are soon reunited when they are both captured by Jawas, child-sized scavengers who trade in droids and technological scraps. The Jawas sell the droids to Owen Lars, a moisture farmer on a remote homestead. Owen’s nephew, young Luke Skywalker, cleans the droids and, as he does...

Starwars and Gangsterism

...George Lucas managed to illuminate the world in 1977, with his mesmerising and delightful rousing adventure, Star Wars. A story of an epic struggle between the defiant good alliance and the malicious powerful evil empire, this sci-fi classic is charged with spectacle and adventure. Its evocative sound track and its avant-garde, eye-popping special effects, without a doubt, proclaimed it a revolutionist. Lucas paid homage and terrifically borrowed clichés and themes from other movie genres and synthesised them together. This, therefore, created a cultural phenomenon that is to this day universally revered by anyone and everyone. In this glorious fantasy, even Gangster Films contrived to lure themselves right at the beginning. In one of the first scenes, we see guards alarmed from the noise of a space craft that has no intention in making a silent entry. As they stand prepared, holding their guns, a medium shot of a door being forced open with fusing lasers, informs us intruders are moments away from invading the shuttle. Fuming explosives jumps into the screen, tearing the door down. Still at a medium shot, Storm Troopers barge in shooting relentlessly. At an eye-level, we can see the submissive sentinels being attained and falling to the ground, helpless. The Troopers then nonchalantly walks over the attained at a low angle, similar to how gangsters would treat their victims. Obviously insufficient and powerless, the remaining guards run away. In walks Darth Vader in a full...

Mexican Wars

...Good vs. Evil By: Maria Domingo 3rd block- Ms. Best Good always seems to overcome the evil in every story, novel, movie etc. In both Beowulf and Star wars there is a hero and a villain. Their stories each have a meaning on what is good and evil, most importantly sacrifices. They fight for what they believe and to save their own people. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar builds a great Mead-hall called Herot, where his people and warriors can celebrate and share stories. Despite their celebrations, Grendel, one of Evil’s sons, terrorizes them and kills them every night he hears them happy and cheerful. One day Beowulf, a Geatish warrior, comes upon Demark to defeat Grendel. He fights him unarmed and defeats him by tearing off the monster’s arm. Grendel is mortally wounded and dies in his swamp. However Grendel’s mother seeks revenge, killing one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisors. Beowulf still fights back by killing her as well. Years pass and a dragon comes to terrorize Denmark, Beowulf also defeats this monster, but dies in the process. He had given all his strength and courage to save his people. In Star Wars IV, Darth Vader had intercepted Princess Leia’s ship and interrogated the crew and ordering his stormtroopers to search the ship for secret documents he believe is there. Princess Leia gets a message in one of her robots, R2, and lets them escape so someone can get the cry for help. Eventually Luke Skywalker finds R2 and stumbles across a bit of the...

...at E3 in 2013, Dice and EA have been working collaboratively to produce possibly the best, modern star wars game to ever hit the gaming market. A trailer was revealed back in April of 2015 showing some in game engine cinematics, teasing some of the immense environments from the star wars universe. However this created an uproar of angry gamers on the internet complaining that the trailer did not represent what they may be seeing visually in the game. And in response, yesterday, at EA's E3 conference in LA, the team from sweden finally were able to silence their haters and blew them away with an incredible gameplay trailer featuring the map hoth on the multiplayer game mode walker assault. The trailer begins inside a hoth echo base on the rebels side, first highlighting that all footage was recorded off a PS4, and from what i can initially tell, the graphics look outstanding. It can be noted that the footage is from pre alpha which shows that graphics and performance in the game will be enhanced before the game ships late November 2015. The trailer throws you straight into the battle with familiar recognisable faces with the customisable character option where you can decide what face you want from the variety of races in the star wars universe. EA DICE went back to the archives of Lucasfilm and Skywalker Sound, pulling the models, props, and sound effects used in the original trilogy of films. They were then captured and integrated into the game, with the hopes of creating one...

Star Wars Conspircy

...Alfredo Sigala Conspiracy Theory Death Star Attack Introduction We’ve all heard the Death Star attack. We all know about Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance and how they were able to steal the plans of the Death star to find its weakness. Then mounted a foolhardy attack on the most powerful, well-defended battle station ever built. And we’ve all seen the video of the one-in-a-million shot that resulted in a massive chain reaction that not just damaged, but completely obliterated that massive technological wonder. Like many, I believed what i saw during the attack. But as I watched the video again, I began to realize that all was not as it seemed. And the more I questioned the official story, the more clear it became. Like many citizens, I have many questions that I would like answered: was the mighty Imperial government really too incompetent to prevent a handful of a ragtag team of rebels from destroying one of their most prized assets? Or are they hiding something from us? Who was really behind the attack? Why did they want the Death Star destroyed? No matter what the answers, we have a problem. We all heard the story of the rebels stealing the plans for the Death Star. Darth Vader chasing down Princess Leia for stealing the plans. The chase was stop at Tatooine when Darth Vader Star Destroyer was able to blast Leias cruiser. Princess Leia was then captured by Darth Vader on her ship, Tantive IV. But before getting captured by Vader she was able to give the plans...

The Birth of Fantasy Football by Luke Esser

...can be forgiven for not noticing at the time, since a little distraction called the Cuban missile crisis had nearly thrust the world into nuclear war in the last week of October. Now approaching its 32nd birthday, fantasy football was born of three fathers -- the founding fathers of a game that slowly matured into the sports colossus that today inspires, infatuates and confounds millions of players. At first glance, 1962 may not seem such a long time ago. American Graffiti offers a snapshot of that era, nostalgically asking the question, "Where were you in '62?" But it was the dark ages in football years. We're not simply talking about a time far enough back that the Raiders still played in Oakland. We're talking about a time so distant, so remote, that the Raiders played in Oakland and were absolutely terrible. Our three founding fathers went on a road trip back East with those terrible 1-13 Raiders, a trip worth remembering only because of the bundle of joy that came bawling into the world one cold, dark fall night. The man who conceived the idea for fantasy football, and who deserves the most credit for the birth of the game, is the late Wilfred "Bill" Winkenbach, who was a limited partner with the Raiders (he owned a financial stake in the team, but had no say in its operation). Winkenbach devised and played precursor fantasy games involving golf and baseball in the...

...DJ Greenlee Comm 250-media ethics group speech My group chose to work on Media Ethics. My group was comprised of Courtney, Zach, Brady, Myrell and me. Our goal was to get the project completed in the time that was provided and inform the class on media ethics. Throughout the speech we also informed the class on media ethics, the Super Bowl, deceptive nature, and the banning of commercials. I think we achieved the goal because the speech was the right amount of time, the class was very interested in what we were talking about and everyone in the group did their part, which made it successful. When the small group was trying to figure out what we were going to do for the speech it was easier than I thought it was going to be. We figured out how we were going to do it by everyone choosing a topic and just doing it. All of us knew it was going to take some hard work but we knew we could do it. Our implied leader was Myrell. She stayed on top of everything and was always there with everything we needed and knew exactly what to do. The groups task needs were very important because we wouldn’t have anything to do and the speech wouldn’t have been completed. We had to do most of the work on our own such as the research on our topics but when it came to criteria that needed to be talked about together we brainstormed the subject and decided on if it was good for the presentation or not. Luckily our group was made of a bunch of great students and everyone did their work and no one...

Competitive Advantage

...Running head: COMPETATIVE ADVANTAGE AND PRO SPORTS Competative Advantage and Pro Sports Cynthia Moreno University of Phoenix MGT 488 Ricky Lovitt Abstract Competitive advantage is defined as the strategic advantage one business entity has over its rival entities within its competitive industry. Competitive advantage occurs when an organization acquires or develops an attribute or combination of attributes that allows it to outperform its competitors. “A firm is said to have a competitive advantage when it is implementing a value creating strategy not simultaneously being implemented by any current or potential player” (Barney 1991 cited by Clulow et al.2003, p. 221). To gain competitive advantage a business strategy of a firm manipulates the various resources over which it has direct control and these resources have the ability to generate competitive advantage (Reed and Fillippi 1990 cited by Rijamampianina 2003, p. 362). There are two of competitive advantages: comparative advantage and differential advantage. We will address differential advantage in this paper and how it applies to the business of professional sports. A differential advantage is created when a firm's products or services differ from its competitors and are seen as better than a competitor's products by customers. Four criteria that determine a firm's competitive capabilities in the marketplace and judging a firm’s resources are as follows: 1. Are they Valuable? (do they enable a firm to...

The managerial roles identified in the text and portrayed through the film of the main characters were first off General Manager Billy Beane. Beane’s role was the interpersonal one. Beane was the leader of the organization he was in charge to recruit, select, train, evaluate, motivate and then direct his followers which were the players of the Oakland Athletics. Next we had Peter Brand the Assistant General Manager, who is in the informational role of the organization. Brand gathered the information on the players that Beane needed to go after and sign for the team and who also fell within the price range that they could spend. Brand was also a monitor of what was going on...

Tony Bank Case Study

...5. Tony Banks Admittedly, Tony Bank (1873) struggled during his time with the St. Louis Rams. However, he spent the best two years of his NFL career in Baltimore. He did quite a good job in 1999, achieving 2386 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 320 attempts and 8 interceptions. However, his inconsistent performance in 2012 eventually cost him his position: he was replaced by Trent Dilfer. 4. Steve McNair The deceased quarterback (1973 –2009) spent the two final seasons of his NFL career with the Ravens. McNair made good impact in the 2006 season: he started every game he played and contributed actively to the team’s AFC AFC North Championship. Just that season alone, he threw for 3,050 yards, scored 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during 16 games. However, his performance in the 2007 season was far from satisfactory with injuries among the main reasons. His overall records for the Ravens include 4,163 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He announced his retirement in 2008. 3. Trent Dilfer Trent Dilfer (1972) spent only one season with the Ravens but he did leave his distinct mark in the team’s history. He was considered the game manager during the 2000 season and led his team to win the Super Bowl ( XXXV) with 12 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown. His overall records during his short stint with the Ravens include 1502 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and 226 attempts. ...drama film directed by Bennett Miller from a script written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. The film is based on Michael Lewis's 2003 non-fiction book of the unchanged name, an account of the Oakland Athletics baseball team's 2002 season and their general manager Billy Beane's challenges to assemble a competitive team. In the film, Beane (Brad Pitt) and assistant GM Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), faced with the franchise's critical financial situation, take a sophisticated sabermetric approach towards scouting and evaluating players, acquiring "submarine" pitcher Chad Bradford (Casey Bond) and former catcher Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt), and winning 20 consecutive games, an American League record. Columbia Pictures bought the copyrights to Lewis's book in 2004. After a number of years in advance, the film was presented at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on September 23, 2011 to a box office success and positive reviews. Moneyball

...The book Moneyball by Michael Lewis is about a former major league baseball player who became the manager of the Oakland A’s. It tells the story of how he led the team to success despite their low budget by using computer based analytics to draft players. With the help of Bill James, the Oakland A’s came up with a new plan based on statistics to draft players. He went after players nobody wanted due to their low budget and his new plan. Billy led the Oakland Athletics to a successive win seasons by changing the way he measured players. He abandoned the traditional 5 “tool” the other scouts used and adopted empirical analytics. The abandonment of the traditional assessment of players for the analytical approach led to high victory for the Oakland A’s despite their low budget. By applying sabermetrics to baseball the Oakland Athletics found a way to defeat rich teams. Billy Beane had a different approach, he had metrics he used particular metrics to evaluate and pick players. Those metrics are, on base plus slugging, walks and hits per innings pitched, and base runs. James thought the statistics for baseball were inaccurate. James stated that “statistics were not merely inadequate; they lied. And the lies they told led the people who ran major league baseball teams to misjudge their players and mismanage their games” (Lewis 67). By recognizing this, it helped the Oakland A’s find undervalued players because the other scouts were still judging based on only the statistics of the individual...
