INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY
The Godfather, written in 1969, by a renowned Italian-American author, Mario Puzo, is based on the organized crimes that New York witnessed post World War II. The book opens with the wedding of Connie Corleone, daughter of Don Vito 'The Godfather' Corleone, head of the most powerful of the five great Mafia clans or 'families' of New York. He is a paradigmatic mafia don. Don Corleone is shot at by a new contender for power in the city, Virgil 'the Turk' Sollozzo, who plans to obtain power by the lure of vast profits in the drug trafficking trade. In Don Vito’s absence, his elder son Santino Corleone assumes the responsibility of the don to manage the family business. Hearing of his father’s news Michael returns home and during his hospital visit saves his father’s life from yet another murder attempt. These incidences filled Michael with vengeance and he plans to kill Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey and convinces Santino and Tom (family’s consigiliere) for the same. After the Don is incapacitated by his assassination attempt, the book follows the Corleone family's progress as they must now adapt to the changing times and power dynamics and maintain the Corleone Empire. Santino 'Sonny' Corleone is too blunt and brash a man to ever become Don while his sibling, Freddie is weak and ineffective. The book follows the journey and transformation of the youngest, and hitherto the Don's most distant, son Michael as he realizes that though he may have tried to live by society's norms, rejecting what his father represented, inside lives a true Sicilian who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and protect those he loves. Michael has a tough task ahead of him, he has to locate his father's would-be assassin, crush the rival gangs and regain once more the respect that the name Corleone inspired in New York. Vito serves as Michael’s advisor, but old age starts to take its toll on him and he eventually dies. Michael smartly launches a campaign to remove all his enemies. He gets all the heads of the families killed along with Tessio, an old associate and Carlos, his brother in law who he suspects of treachery. All his plans prove to be successful and by the end, he is able to legalize the Corleone family and restore it to its full glory.

SUMMARY AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS
PART 1: Vito is portrayed as a man who is looking for friendship in return for his services, a man who is happy on the day of his daughter’s wedding and is also hearing to people’s requests. He is shown as a loving and caring father and a husband to his family. Vito's youngest son, Michael is a celebrated war hero who comes to the wedding with his girlfriend. Vito's godson Johnny Fontane, a popular singer, pleads for help to secure a coveted movie role, so Vito dispatches his consigliore, Tom Hagen to the studio head, Jack Woltz, to secure the casting. Woltz is unmoved until the morning he wakes up in bed with the severed head of his horse. Next, drug baron Sollozzo, backed by the Tattaglias, asks Vito for protection and in return he promises a share of his drug business, but Vito refuses. He disapproves of the drugs business. Sollozzo tries to get Vito killed but he survives and ends up in a hospital after being shot at five times by the assassins. Michael, his youngest son, saves his life in the hospital and in the meantime Vito’s eldest son Sontino takes over the family business. The book starts with the wedding of Don Vito Corleone’s daughter. In the opening part of the book, Vito seems to be a very kind and ethical person. He listens to the requests of different people even on the day of his daughter’s wedding. He comes across as a man of moral values as he refused to kill a man on the request of the undertaker and also didn’t give support to Sollozzo’s drug cartel. Vito is depicted as a mafia lord who is also a family man. This comes across when he refuses to take a photo as his youngest son was not yet present at the wedding. We also see his leadership and persuasive skills by the way he deals with Woltz. The way he refuses Sollozzo’s offer shows his negotiating skills. He seemed like a master of the art of surface-acting. He is very smart and logical as a mafioso, always knowing when to take a deal or not, and how to go about doing so PART 2: This part of the book shows the lives of different members of the Corleone family after the shooting of Vito. Sollozzo tries to pressurize Santino to accept his offer and also tries to murder Vito in the Hospital. Vito is saved by his son Michael. Michael comes up with a plan to kill Sollozzo and McCluskey. On the pretext of settling the dispute, Michael lures the pair to a restaurant, murders them and flees to Sicily where he falls in love with a girl and marries her. A murder attempt against Michael saw his wife being killed. Meanwhile, the situation in America worsens as the five Underworld families takes to war. Santino is now in charge of his family business. He attacks his brother-in-law Carlo on the street for abusing his sister Connie. Carlo does the same thing again, and this time Santino is killed on his way to his sister’s home. Santino Corleone appears to be a hot headed man who is driven by emotions and who acts on impulse from time to time. His behaviour is sometime not appropriate like when he speaks out of turn during the conversation between Sollozzo and Vito. His temper and impulsive attitude is seen when he attacks his brother-in-law in the street. Further, it was because of his this attitude he got killed while going to his sister’s house to repeat his act. His civilian son, Michael Corleone on the other hand appears to be calm and collected personality who thinks before taking an action. The way he plotted the murder of Sollozzo and the way he carried it out is a testimony to the same.

Page 3

PART 3: Vito is saddened to learn about the death of his son and Michael’s involvement in the family business. To end the feuds, Vito met the heads of the Five Families and withdrew his opposition to the drug business. He immediately sued for peace. He also stated that he will forget about his son Santino’s murder. But he reaffirmed that Michael should not be harmed. Michael took the reins of the family and promised his new wife to make it legitimate within five years. Michael moved family operations to Nevada, and delegated New York operations to old members. Michael replaced Hagen with his father as his consigliere. With the intention to buy out Greene's stake in the family's casinos he travelled to Las Vegas. Vito collapsed and died while playing with his grandson. Michael Corleone has decided to be godfather to his sister’s son on her and her husband’s request. While this baptism is being performed, Michael Corleone’s men are out killing the heads of all the other mafia families. He also gets Moe Greene killed to acquire his property in Las Vegas and make the Corleone family business legal. After the baptism he sends his family to Las Vegas while he stays back in New York to take care of some unfinished business. This business includes getting Tessio and Carlos killed. Tessio was an old associate of his father but had turned traitor. Carlos worked for Barzini and used to torture Michael’s sister which was a part of the plan to kill Santino Corleone. When the news of Carlo’s death reaches Connie, she gets hysterical and accuses Michael for it. When Kay asks Michael about it, he denies it. Michael becomes the new Godfather. Vito was shown weeping on his son’s death which would have come as a shock to many of the readers. But if we think carefully, then the act was expected. Right from the start he has been shown as a person who values his family and so it was quite natural that the death of his eldest son brought tears to his eyes. Also, he knew that his business was harmful and hence did not want his youngest son to join the same implies his self-awareness. Even at this stage he shows his ability to read the situation and shows immense leadership qualities as he tries to end the feud between the five families. He was a keen observer and during the meeting he deduced that Tattaglia was under orders of Don Emilio Barzini. We see the farsightedness of Michael as he makes immediate plans to relocate his business and at the same time goes about his task to taking his business and his family name to where it belonged. In the last part of the book, Michael comes off as a tactful man who had everything planned all along. He was not moved by vengeance. A cool headed individual like him could not have been. On the other hand he was smart and a farsighted individual. He saw that the only way to get his family safe and his business back to where it was and yet legal is to kill the heads of the five families and move to Las Vegas. He gets all the heads of families and Tessio killed. His ruthlessness did not stop here. After this, he meets his brother-in-law who he knows is responsible for his brother’s death. Here again he shows great skills in reading people as he guesses that Tessio is a traitor and that his brother in law was involved in the murder of his brother Santino. In the end, Michael becomes the Godfather.

LEADERSHIP THEORIES
Fiedler Model When the conditions were moderately favourable, Don Vito adopted lenient type of leadership. He never gave excessive directions to his men and concentrated on making good relationships. He was high on the Leader Member relation aspect of the Contingency model. However, when the conditions were unfavourable, Don Michael Corleone adopted hardnosed type style of leadership which was effective in that situation and allowed him to conquer the Mafia world again. He was high on the Position Power aspect of the contingency model. Authentic Leader An authentic leader possesses the following qualities: Know who they are – Don Vito Corleone had a good understanding of his strengths, weaknesses, needs and desires. He knew that he cannot stand against all the big families so he had to have a good relationship with everyone by stopping killings which were affecting the business.

Page 5

Know what they believe in (values) – He believed that drugs and narcotics was a harmful business and hence did not use his political support for the same so he refused Solazzo’s proposal as it was against his ethics. Act on those values and beliefs openly and candidly – He carried out his acts openly and blatantly. He never shied away from his beliefs and values.

Transformational Leadership Theory Idealized Influence: A leader commands respect and trust from his followers. Corleone had built a powerful community around him which included judges and politicians.Vito was always true to his word and kept promises. For Instance, when he told the heads of all 5 families that he would not avenge Santino’s death, he was believed by all. He recognized the need of revitalization and used his personal ability to his advantage to have a profound effect. Individualized Consideration: Vito gave individual attention to his followers or to anyone who came to him for help. Even during his daughter’s wedding he attended to everyone who approached him for help or advice. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE After the death of Santino Corleone, Don Vito Corleone displays exceptional emotional intelligence and calls off the violence by addressing everyone’s insecurities. Vito displays following traits:  Perceiving Emotions: Don Vito Corleone has a fine understanding of his strengths, weaknesses, needs and desires. He was open towards his emotions. He said how he felt about his son’s death and such an act should not be repeated Reasoning With Emotions: Don is self-regulated and finds ways to control and channel his emotional feelings. He calls for truce even though the other families killed his elder son Understanding Emotions: Don Corleone is internally motivated to expand his business. He loves his job and works during his daughter’s wedding because he considers work to be of utmost value. However, he is a family man and showers adequate care to his family too. Managing Emotions: Don Vito Corleone acquired his powerful position because of his innate ability of earning other’s loyalties. He is willing to go the extra mile to help others and in return asks for friendship and so he has good political friends of him.

PERCEPTION
Attribution Theory: It tries to explain the ways in which one judges people differently, depending on the meaning we attribute to a given behaviour. Our perception and judgment of a person’s actions are influenced by the assumptions we make about that persons internal state.

Page 6

Distinctiveness: It refers to whether an individual displays different behaviours in different situations. Don Vito Corleone was a character who displays that he was largely governed by external factors. He is shown to be happy during his daughter’s wedding. We see that he tells Johnny Fontane to act like a man when he cries in front of him and later we see Vito himself crying after the death of his eldest son. Consistency: Don Vito always gave importance to loyalty and respect. He rejected the offer of getting into drug business and stuck to his values. This shows that he was internally high on consistency. Stereotyping: We have a stereotype of a Mafia leader of being a bad person. But Vito is shown to be someone completely different. He is driven by his ethics and values and refuses to be involved in the drug business. He is shown as a family man who loves and cares for his family. Halo Effect: We see many examples of Halo Effect throughout the book. Tom Wagen could be judged by the readers on his one act when he accepts Sollozzo’s advice to convince Santino to help Sollozzo in his drug business. By this one act he seems like a person who could be easily subdued. Though in many parts of the book we get evidence to the contrary but this image of Tom stays in the minds of the readers.

LEARNING
David Kolb’s experiential learning theory Accommodating: Santino Corleone is depicted as a man who displays Accommodating style of learning, characterized by concrete experience and active experimentation. He was brash and this shows from his impulsion of doing things. He was the type who preferred doing rather than watching. Feeling played a large part in his decision making and he was also moved by intuition rather than analytical thinking. Converging: Michael Corleone is depicted as a man who displays Converging style of learning, characterized by abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. He is the kind of character who tries to analyse a situation and then take an action. His learning cycle depicts Thinking and Doing approach to go about a task Assimilating: Tom Hagen displays Assimilating type of learning, characterized by abstract conceptualization and reflective observation. He is a cool headed man who prefers watching rather than doing. This can be seen throughout the book as even in toughest of the situations he prefers to take a backseat and not take any action though he does analyse the whole situation which shows that he prefers thinking rather than feeling. Diverging: Michael Corleone is depicted as a man who displays Diverging style of learning, characterized by concrete experience and reflective observation. He was tactful and cool headed and was unmoved by vengeance. Thus, he saw things from different perspectives. Shaping Behaviour Reinforcement: Throughout the book we see Vito and Michael use various reinforcement techniques to get their job done. Right in the beginning Vito portrays himself as someone who will be a friend who wants his friendship. Here he used positive reinforcement as he is

Page 7

one person whom you would want to be friends with. Apart from this we see various characters using ‘punishment’ to shape others behaviour.

PAC Model
Adult Ego: In Adult ego, people behave in thinking, rational, calculating, factual, unemotional manner. The adult gathers information, reasons things out, estimates probabilities, and makes decision with cool and calm behaviour. After looking at Michael Corleone personality, we have a greater appreciation for his character as he is controlled by his adult ego without any superego to socially check his actions and behaviour, who is hostile to the family business, and proves to be a worthy successor to his father's position. He doesn’t even use any defence mechanisms because he eliminates all of his problems before they exist. His cardinal dispositions of always remaining logical, objective, conscientious and extraverted proves his position. Child Ego: Child Ego is a state in which people behave, feel and think similarly to how they did in childhood. Santino "Sonny" Corleone was the eldest of the Corleone children and the most involved in his father’s criminal business, known for his temper and compulsive aggression and rash decisions who is hot-headed, violent, and reckless, this behaviour of his is controlled by child ego state as he reacted to a situation without planning and analysing it thoroughly that leads him into a death trap set by a rival family.

CONCLUSION
The Godfather is a book that through its different characters displays various concepts and theories of Organizational Behaviour. Vito’s ‘family business’ could be compared to a present day organization as it follows a hierarchy and has its own set of rules and regulations. Reading through different occurrences in the book, reader can easily relate it with different theories of learning, leadership, perception etc. and can get a better understanding of the same.

GROUP WORKING
TEAM DEVELOPMENT After the announcement of project, we met after the class and discussed how to go about the project. It started the working of team. FORMING As we had worked together before, members were known to each other , so this process has taken a little time in the form of expected roles of the members in this project. STORMING This stage was reached in the first meeting of the team, as we discussed the approach and role of members. At length discussions occurred on who is the best one for a role. Mohit became the informal leader and different works were assigned amongst the members. Some conflicts about the roles were resolved , by assigning best role as per the ability of member. By the second meeting , everyone was clear about their respective roles and the performance expectation of team from members. NORMING In second meeting and thereafter discussions through group mails, team finalised its norms of working and started movement towards performing stage. Mails became established manner of communication between members. Even during the vacations, project progressed and coordinated through frequent communication amongst member through this medium, a virtual team concept got realised. PERFORMING As the role became clear , procedure and norms got fixed for the project. Team started working on the task issues. It has gone through the process of rational decision making. First the task at hand was analysed , i.e. it was divided into different steps . One was to select a book , read and summarise. Other was to analyse the story and its characters on the framework of organisational behaviour. And other was to summarise all the work and prepare a comprehensive report. After analysing the problem, we started working on suggesting different alternatives. It includes suggesting different books which can be reviewed. Some of the names suggested were “who moved my cheese”, “Six thinking hats”, “Alchemist” “Fountain head” and “Godfather”. Thereafter, these alternatives were analysed. Godfather was chosen on its merits of every member having a good knowledge of its story and character as a good movie is there based on the same story. After deciding the novel, everyone was instructed to read the novel at least once and share their insights. Then these insights were analysed as per the organisational behaviour theories and noted. Thereafter some team members were assigned characters of story to analyse. Then their finding were discussed in group and modified wherever necessary. It occurred with arguments and comments, but those
Page 9

were constructive for the project. After the discussions got over, noted points were summarised and written in a logical order. It completed a draft of the report. After that all points were analysed for completeness of review and some points were added e.g. Kolb’s experiential learning theory. Then this report was prepared on the lines of draft prepared earlier. ADJOURNING Even this project has got completed; members will work as a team on other projects, but with different roles. So, this stage has not come in team till date.

Book Review of "Midnight Musings of a Family Therapist"

...“Midnight Musings of a Family Therapist” By: Carl Whitaker Book Paragraph It wasn’t easy choosing a book. I browsed the library and found a few titles that sounded interesting (The title has to appeal to me before I decide to read a book). So after scanning the pages of some of my choices, I finally decided on “Midnight Musings of a Family Therapist” by Carl Whitaker. After reading the preface, the book sounded like something I would enjoy. Prof. Whitaker talks about his trials and tribulations of venturing between being a psychologist and a psychotherapist, as well as being a husband and father of six. He tells many stories of the different environments that he encountered, as well as the different people with different diseases. I’m hoping this book will give me a greater outlook in the world of psychology. With Prof. Whitaker having been in so many different professions within the psychology field, I get to read about his different experiences and the various methods he used in treating his patients. So far I feel like I can relate to Prof. Whitaker because he describes how sometimes he felt he was the crazy one and not his patients. He goes on to describe how he learns as much from them as they do from him. This book is opening my eyes to the world of psychology and I hope to have a better idea of the field by the time I am finished. Summary My review of “Midnight Musings…” will begin with a look into Whitaker’s biography, a few of his ideals on marriage, and then...

...The Assignment BUS 520 Meaning of action: semantic vs pragmatic. The importance of language : How we speak about action; what are the specific circumstances between actors. Language creates new meanings. New linguistic meanings create new possibilities and social realities. And language and action inform each other. Example: the statement “Jump from the window!” can mean many things. The statement can be “reinterpreted in many ways” and “different kinds of actions” are compatible/triggered by that statement, other than the literal interpretation and action that reflects the literal meaning. Semantics views action as propositional sentences. Seen as statements that someone makes to someone about something; they refer to events in the world (mere descriptions of things). Theory of action: from what? To Why? To who? (the agent). Focusing too much on What? and Why? and losing track of Who? (The who? Is ultimately needed for understand action from an ethical perspective.) We need to understand action related to an agent (not just a logical agent but a self). Attribution (of predicates) to a logical subject is not the same as: Ascription to a self where the agent can self-designate himself in the action he performed (or better yet, that he has not yet performed). Imputation (of moral value to an action) is an improvement over attribution but it is not enough. We must distinguish between event vs. action, knowing how vs. knowing that. Action can...

Abortion vs Child Birth

...| Abortion vs. Child Birth | An Individual’s Cost and the Cost to Society | | | Abortion vs. Child Birth An Individual’s Cost and the Cost to Society “The ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.” Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (Boonstra, et al., 2006, p.6) Introduction “A woman typically spends roughly five years pregnant, postpartum or trying to become pregnant and three decades trying to avoid pregnancy.” (Boonstra, et al., 2006 p.6) This is more true today than any other time in history. The role women have played throughout history has been that of nuturer. In society today, she must also be provider. With this added duty placed on her, today’s women have had to adjust. One of these adjustments are the number of children she is willing and able to provide for. Advancements in technology in the past century has enabled her to control this, specifically abortion and the use of contraceptives. Hypothesis Changing roles in the family unit have caused the dynamic to change. Women have become the sole provider to the family in many households forcing them to earn a living as well as take care of the children. Conflicting sets of moral and ethical values within society have made their choices more difficult. By controlling which options she has availible, is society choosing for her?
