Obed Britt appeared in court at the age of seventy-three to recount the events of the Revolutionary War which passed on June 7, 1832. Though the document does not specifically state Britt’s age, I estimate that Britt was about eighteen when he enlisted because of the time that he recounted his memories. In 1777, Obed Britt heard of the rumors that the British were coming inland, because of this, Britt enlisted. Soon after, he was discharged because the officers said that the rumors of the British based on no support. The second time Britt enrolled into the Army, Britt marched from Williamsburg to Yorktown, Virginia by the command of General Thomas Nelson and Colonel Mason. “This turning point in the American Revolution prevented the British from dividing New England from the rest of the colonies, and it was the deciding factor in bringing active French support to the American cause” (aoc.gov). Later, with Captain John Curd, Obed Britt marched to the Barracks and was later discharged home. Again, Britt enlisted in the army on 1779 with Captain Tarleton Payne and served in the third Virginia detachment of the Virginia line. Britt marched to Fredericksburg, Virginia where he was appointed sergeant to a company until he reached Petersburgh, Virginia. Britt was under command of different Colonials until he marched towards Charleston, South Carolina. Because Charleston was surrounded by the British, Britt and the other soldiers waited on Santee River to receive more information. The soldiers captured a few British, but before they could bring them back to their base, the American army was forced to retreat.
