...Article Review Samantha ******* HCS/457 March 29, 2014 Jean Ha Article Review Obesity is a common disease now in the United States, but it is one of the main diseases here in the Coweta County communities. The Piedmont Newnan Hospital has conducted an assessment which addresses these needs and ways to help the people in the community to get healthier. Obesity problems within the community has been going on well over ten years, but with the new technology and community leaders, plans have been put into place to gather information and start making changes happen. A main concern that leaders have in the community is the ability to make people continue to live a healthy lifestyle rather than going back to their old ways. After a yearlong of research along with two-way meetings the Piedmont Newnan Hospital that is located in Newnan, GA completed a community health needs assessment. After the assessment was conducted, the team created implementation plans in the Coweta County community. Sarah Langly, CEO of community benefits at Piedmont Newnan Healthcare, stated “What we found was not surprising and is similar for many communities. Each community is dissimilar as far as prioritizing those needs and where Piedmont can have the most impact by working alongside existing community groups.” Health facts on the public and collaboration between community stakeholders, leaders, and district council permitted Piedmont management to determine the main concerns...

...Obesity: The Epidemic Obesity: The Epidemic When you hear the word epidemic you automatically associate it a deadly virus or disease. Would you believe me if I told you that obesity is considered an epidemic? Well now in the 21st century obesity has become a national epidemic. Obesity is a major contributor to some of the leading causes of death in the United States. The percentage of obese children and adults is steadily increasing due to the lack of physical exercise and the consumption of food with a higher fat content. Providing free nutritional programs along with free memberships to gyms can help with obesity. A majority of the foods we eat are loaded with high calories, sugar, and fat and contribute to obesity. People spend most of their time eating and they don’t always eat healthy. “Where dining out was once reserved for special occasions, it is now part of many Americans’ weekly, or even daily, routine… According to ERS estimates, food away from home accounted for 42% of U.S. households’ food expenditures in 2009.”(Morrison, Mancino, Variyam, 2011, pg. 35). Fast food tend to be energy dense, poor in micronutrients, low in fiber, high in glycemic load and excessive in portion size, causing high calorie intake. “Consumers now spend almost $600 billion annually at fast food and table-service restaurants. The fast food industry, in particular, has been frequently criticized for contributing to the national obesity problem by selling foods high in calories, saturated...

...Ogunyanwo Walden University NURS-6050N-12, Week5 DB5, Policy & Advocacy for Population Health Dr. Ralyea, C December 19, 2015 Obesity by definition is an excess in body fat, while overweight is an excess in body weight from bones, muscles, fat and water. A tool called Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to calculate obesity and overweight in adults and children. Adult ages 20 and above who have a BMI of 18.5-24 is considered normal, while a BMI of 25-29.9 is overweight, BMI of 30 is obesity, and a BMI of over 40 is morbid obesity (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease) A child is obese/overweight if their BMI is at the 85th percentile, and above the 95th percentile is obese. It is difficult to tell if a child is obese or overweight because they grow at different rates. Unlike the adult, a child’s height and weight is compared to other children of the same age and same sex. According to the state of Obesity, Maryland ranked the 26th most obese/overweight state in the nation. The current obesity rate is 29.6%, which is up from 19% in 2000 and from 10.9% in 1990. (State of Obesity). Obesity/overweight is caused by an imbalance of energy because body weight remains the unchanged when the amount of calories consumed is equal to the number of calories used up by the body, genetic disposition, socio-economic and behavior determinants. Obesity/Overweight predisposes an individual to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis and certain types of cancer...

...example. (30 pts) CAN MEDICATION CURE OBESITY IN CHILDREN? A Review of the Literature In March 2004, U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona called attention to a health problem in the United States that, until recently, we have overlooked: childhood obesity. Carmona highlighted that the “astounding” 15% child obesity rate constitutes an “epidemic.” Since the early ‘80s, that rate has “doubled in children and tripled in adolescents.” Now more than nine million children are classified as obese. While the traditional response to a medical epidemic is to hunt for a vaccine or a cure-all pill, childhood obesity has proven more elusive. Lacking success of recent initiatives suggests that medication mightn’t be the answer for the escalating problem. In this literature review, I will consider whether the use of medication is a promising approach for solving the childhood obesity problem by responding to the following questions: 1. What are the implications of childhood obesity? 2. Is medication effective at treating childhood obesity? 3. Is medication safe for children? 4. Is medication the best solution? Understanding the limitations of medical treatments for children highlights the complexity of the childhood obesity problem in the United States and underscores the need for physicians, advocacy groups, and policymakers to search for other solutions. What Are the Implications of Childhood Obesity? Obesity can be a devastating problem from both...

...Effects of Childhood Obesity Programs Debra S. Murray HCS/465 April 29, 2013 Elizabeth McNutt, FACHE, MS Effects of Childhood Obesity Programs Childhood obesity problems have been on the rise in the United States since the 1970 s. Physicians and parents have become increasingly worried about the effects of their weight on their future. This review will study the aspects of childhood obesity programs and how effective they are in showing children how to make healthy choices when eating. The studies I researched for this paper were the effects of programs in place to prevent childhood obesity. The purpose of the studies was to discover reasons children have the problem of obesity at a young age, and if they will continue to have weight problems as they grow older. This issue is very important for health care administrators to study because it has become a huge problem with children and their future. According to Birch and Ventura (2009), “Despite this problem, actions have been taken through implementation of both obesity prevention and treatment programs.” To date, prevention programs have focused on early school-age children. Many outcomes have been targeted and these include; changing eating habits and choices, increase exercising. The article also notes that current findings of the already implemented programs have produces little success in childhood obesity. The International Journal of Obesity also notes that few intervention programs have been developed for intervention...

...don’t have much money, sometimes are limited to resort to fast food or other unhealthy meals. Obesity refers to the condition of having excessive body fat. Obesity presents a huge problem both physically, mentally, as well as emotionally. People dealing with obesity have to face with humiliation, depression, and sometimes even discrimination. Who is there to blame for this issue? It isn’t likely to find kids exercising like children used to be. Instead, kids are inside playing their video games, on the computer using a social network, simply not being active. Thirty eight percent of public school children in were overweight or obese in 2010 (Allday 2011). Fingers can be pointed in a different number of places, fast food restaurants, soda companies, schools, and sometimes parents in their own homes can be at fault as well. It’s no question that obesity awareness needs to be raised but we as a society must work in unison to get to the main goal, healthier eating and a more active lifestyle. Method This case study was chosen to expand the knowledge of this epidemic issue within our communities. The study explains the overall issue of childhood obesity, health risks, diagnosis and treatment, and the awareness and prevention of the nutritional disorder. Within our group we decided upon this topic based on the doubling rate of obesity in the Bay Area. To aid our research we utilize peer review journals and articles from non-profit organizations, as well as other health reliable sources...

...Obesity Capstone Implementation Project Dr. Reid Hope Locklear UNCW Obesity This process of this project was focused on Obesity in which I used information from my Community Assessment to help prepare this project. During completion of the Community Assessment it became clear that one of the major disadvantages that my community suffered from was Obesity. My target audience included a group of participates that range in the age of 20-35 years old in equal numbers of both female and male participates. Teaching was conducted at the local Bariatric Center. My goal in this project was to make participates more aware of the risk associated with obesity and teach them a healthier lifestyle. Program Objective: The objective to this teaching plan was to have participates be able to recall ways to have healthier choices in regards to diet and exercise. They would be able to demonstrate a knowledge base on the way to lead a more heather lifestyle. In the first stage of this teaching experience I wanted to get a base as to what members of the group felt it meant to be obese and their view on obesity and risk associated with this disease. I asked the question to 10 participates within this group if the participate was aware that Obesity was a disease? 10 out of 10 stated that they were not aware that obesity was a disease. I proceeded to ask the participates to use one word to describe...

...Leading America Away From Obesity By: Amber Stroh New health policies are being enacted to educate Americans about healthy eating patterns in hopes of absolving the obesity epidemic, but those at highest risk have low-income and may be unable to comply. According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s research, approximately one in seven Americans in 2013 struggled with food insecurity; slightly less, at a rate of one out of ten, are households with children (Coleman-Jensen, Gregory, and Singh). At this moment there are Americans experiencing the difficulty of an unwarranted fast or eating under their caloric requirements due to a shortage of resources. The least expensive foods available tend to be high in calories, salts, sugar, and fat (Drewnowski, Specter SE). A change in mindset may be needed to direct people to more healthy food choices but their resources may not cover the costs to purchase them. Food pantries make healthy food options available which helps to lessen this health disparity. Multiple issues are being addressed as the government seeks to guide Americans to a healthier way of life (McCary). Many new health policies have already infiltrated our lives, such as new school lunch regulations, taxes on sugared beverages, and MyPlate. Shortly our nutritional food labels will be replaced. "Calories from fat" will no longer be labeled, however "added sugars" will now be required on the label (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, USDA). Both...
