Secondary Methods
I had the opportunity to observe Ms. Lomardino’s French classes, I and II. In both classes, the bellringer instructed students to define vocabulary or phrases in their notebook. Next, Ms. Lomardino reviewed the answers from the bellringer. Next, both classes practiced speaking the langague after the review. French I students finished their presentations about their favorite hobby and French II students engaged in two-person conversations in front of the class. In the last twenty minutes of class, French I students completed a quiz and French II answered a series of questions about their health that were due at the end of class. The walls in Ms. Lomardino’s classroom are covered in art prints from French artists, maps of French speaking countries, posters of French movies and student art work. She instructs them that she will call out two numbers, and these two students will have a conversation in French in front of the class. The conversation is based on the information from the bellringer so Ms. Lombardino allowed them to bring their notebooks with them if they wanted. Right before she called a number, I heard a girl next to my seat say, “Man, my heart beats so hard right before she calls those numbers,”. Students around her laughed in agreement. This reminded me about how nervous students can be when having to present in front of the class. No students hesitated when there number was called as Ms. Lombardino’s approach to turns was objective. The students realized that every student had an equal chance of going next. The atmosphere in Ms. Lomardino’s class was very conducive to learning a foreign
