Obstacles contribute to growth in my experience, especially in academics and athletics. Which happen to be the two most important topics in my life currently. Obstacles, failures, or setbacks, are all defined with a similar phrase; an event that hinders success. Whether that takes place in school, on the field, or in the ring, I’ve had plenty of experiences with obstacles. I want to describe how a setback in my track and field athletics helped me determine who I wanted to become.
Sports have always been my outlet and I struggled as a kid and early teenager to find a sport that was truly for me. Soccer is another favorite, but it’s not the same kind of rush, or sense of accomplishment that I feel from my track events. My events in track and field are rather, unique. I participate in throwing events, which means I throw different regulated items using different, but regulated techniques. My personal favorite is shot put- throwing an 8.8-pound metal ball into a pit of sand. Shot put has always come easy to me, until I was injured in my junior year season. Resilience is the one I’d like to focus on. That is the quality that I am most grateful for today. After my injury, which was a broken collar bone, I had to make a choice of quitting, or trying to make the best of the situation. I was still attending practice and I decided to simply just switch hands when I threw. Now if you’re ambidextrous this would be an easy solution, but me being overly right hand dominant, switching was not so easy. Nevertheless, I began to train, train, and train some more. After a week I began to notice it was getting easier, I could still throw. It was incredibly painful, due to my collar bone being so sensitive, but my hopes of competing were no longer
