Coping with Learning Disabilities Many people around the world suffer from some type of Learning Disability (LD).
Learning disabilities affect the way people receive, process, analyze, and store information. Many types of learning disabilities have been identified over the years. They can affect many different facets of a person's life, such as concentration, focus, reading, math, or writing. Many people that are diagnosed with a learning disability have more than one. LD has always been difficult to define as a disorder, but is typically seen as “unexpected” underachievement (Swanson, Harris, and Graham 2003). There are many tools and techniques that have been developed to help these people cope with their disability. Many disabilities are diagnosed early in life when a child is noticed to have difficulty communicating effectively, speaking, reading, writing, solving a math problem, or any other task that should be performed at their appropriate age level. There are many different types of learning disabilities that have been identified. Some of the more common ones are dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Although they are not classified as learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism also present learning difficulties. Dyslexia is the most common, and most well known, learning disability. According to Montgomery (2007), “The term “dyslexia” is used as a shortened version of “specific developmental dyslexia” for individuals who have an unexpected difficulty in learning symbol codes at a level in accord with their intellectual ability (p.65). This means that dyslexia is a disorder that makes it difficult to read, write, spell, and sometimes speak. Usually the term learning disability is usually used in

Wally Odom Teamwork

...This week we discussed the topic teamwork and explored Wally Odom, 2011 article, “We Work Best When We Work Together.” Subsequently, Odom, started out the article focusing on Casey Stengel comment about the challenges of managing a professional baseball team. Furthermore, based on Mr. Stengel observation he stated that this was true for life in general, he said, “It is easy to get good players,” however, “Getting’ them to play together, that is the hard part.” Henceforth, the statement may appear basis, or abnormal, but is, however, a normal behavior within a group setting, that not everyone on a team shares the same goals for the success of the team because their attitude and drive do not align or support the mission and vision of the organization....

...trade-eligible. Last week, Grantland took a look at some of the bigger names on that December 15 eligibility list, including Ryan Anderson and Jeremy Lin, but a few other players merit some follow-up now that the deadline has passed. Here's the rundown: Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers have a bunch of mid- and low-salaried players who can now be included in deals: Matt Barnes, Grant Hill, Jamal Crawford, Ronny Turiaf, Ryan Hollins, and Willie Green. Chauncey Billups won’t become trade-eligible until January 15. There are three interesting things in play here: •Health. Billups’s brief comeback is already over, though he’ll presumably return soon. No one knows when Grant Hill will play again, or how effective he’ll be when healthy. Lamar Odom is rebounding better and generally looking almost like an NBA player again, but he’s still shooting 32 percent, including a horrid 4-of-24 from long range, and it’s unclear how much the Clippers will really be able to count on him against good teams in the playoffs. • Rotation issues. Crawford is essential and isn't going anywhere. Barnes has, in many ways, outplayed Caron Butler, whose contract expires after next season. Barnes is a feisty defender and one of the most intuitive cutters in the league, a skill that fits nicely on a team with two offensive centerpieces that draw so much attention; he’s shooting 64 percent on two-point field goal tries. But he doesn’t have Butler’s ability to space the floor, and with Hill’s uncertain status...

To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis

...Tom Robinson was found guilty and was sentenced to death. Even decades later this speech is still important. Evidence of this is the case of Kirk Odom. In 1981 eighteen-year-old Kirk Odom was accused of rape and theft. Evidence of this is “The officer pulled a sketch of an unidentified black man out of his pocket and invited Odom to agree that the person in the drawing looked strikingly like him. “I said, ‘No, it doesn’t look like me,’” Odom recalls. Then the officer took the teenager’s name and address and allowed him to walk away thinking that was the end of that. A few days later, Odom was arrested and charged with a brutal crime. The victim had seen her assailant only fleetingly and in the dark, and the composite drawing that had been based on her description – the one that the police officer had thought looked just like him – referred to a black male of “medium complexion” when Odom’s skin is very dark. He also had a convincing alibi, having been asleep at his mother’s house at the time of the attack. With such shaky evidence, Odom assumed that the authorities would soon realize their mistake and the whole nightmare would go away. “I didn’t think anything was going to come of this, because I hadn’t done anything,” he says” (Pilkington.) This quote shows just how racism affected trials even decades after Atticus had been delivered...

Behaviors of Effective Leaders

...behaviors that are conducive to the success of their leadership. Sometimes those behaviors may be abnormal or part of a syndrome like psychopathy. Other times behaviors are considered normal according to personality ratings. Taken together these behaviors can be characteristics found in an effective leader. In addition, behaviors of an effective leader can be categorized into three themes of personality traits, personal leadership styles, and leader self-identity. While not all behaviors are conducive to effective leadership, all the above themes are vital to the development of successful leaders of the past, present and future. The shared themes were synthesized from three articles all of which discussed the effective leader. First, the Odom, Boyd, and Williams (2012) article, “Impact of Personal Growth Projects on Leadership Identity Development” whose purpose was to explain the importance of personal growth in the identity of self for potential leaders of the future. Next, “Fearless Dominance and the U.S. Presidency: Implications of Psychopathic Personality Traits for Successful and Unsuccessful Political Leadership” written by Lilienfeld, et al (2012) whose purpose was to explore psychopathic personality traits that are present in effective leaders in the business and political world. Finally, the purpose of the last article written by van Eeden, Cilliers, and van Deventer (2008) called “Leadership Styles and Associated Personality Traits: Support for the Conceptualization...
