Jacobs, B., and Wright, R. (1999). Stick-up, Street Culture, and Offender Motivation. Criminology, 37, 149-168. The purpose of this article is to understand the reasons, motivations, and decision processes for offenders committing such acts of robbery. Arguments made by the authors include the act of robbery stemming from the need for quick cash, which is many times shaped participation in street culture (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 149). Motivation is described as the main variable for criminal behavior (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 149). While examining the motives for robbery, many things pertaining to street culture arose. However most of the crimes committed are economically motivated (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 163). Robbery was found to be the response to how offenders view themselves as needing money (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 163). It was also found that although street culture is main motivator for robberies, it is often overlooked (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 165). It was also found that offenders are sometimes drained by their own situations (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 167). Whether it be financial, emotional, or pharmacological, robbery is seen to them as a way out of that situation (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 167). Lastly, it was found that being a street robber is an approach of life that includes ways of thinking and behaving (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p. 167-168). In this article, the authors indicated that their findings supported the central purpose of the sample. Included was the many different reasons street robbers choose to live the lifestyle in which they rob people on a daily basis. Based on the studies conducted, the authors were able to prove that street culture assists with shaping and activating the decision to commit robbery (Jacobs & Wright, 1999, p.

...Criminal Justice The literature on criminal profiling has risen to a considerable volume. It includes not only a high number of true criminals but also many scholars’ articles and texts. In light of this, the paper will be on the history of profiling, with specific analysis of inductive and deductive profiling. History of Profiling Offender profiling also referred to as criminal profiling, offender analysis psychological profiling or simply profiling is an investigative exercise that was initially established to provide behavioral counsel to the police investigations. Likewise, people have projected many definitions of what essentially institutes a profile, and what the objectives of this advice should be. Nevertheless, whereas many variation exists about content and...

...and calculated serial killer. It will mention several different specific serial killers and their histories to support the facts. Another area that is explored is the difference between mass murderers and serial killers. Many times theses terms are used simultaneously; however the fact is that they are different. Reviewing the classifications, behaviors, motives, childhood neglect, sanity, and how profiling and other methods will assist in catching a serial killer. Understanding and studying serial killers can help in preventing them to start killing, or in catching them before they continue killing. Research shows that the problem of serial killing can be addressed by understanding its causes, identifying common behaviors and motivations of serial killers, and using this information to develop tools for law enforcement to prevent initial or repeated killings If a person commits a murder, it doesn’t constitute to be tagged a serial killing. I will be including material in order to define what serial killer is, and why we are so obsessed with understanding them. To fully discuss and understand serial killers, we must first distinguish the differences between them and mass murderers. The term mass murderer is often used interchangeably; however, the two terms are technically different. Mass murder occurs when a large number of people are killed at the same time or within a short period of time, or ritualistic manner. (Time Life staff, 1992). “ The term ‘serial killings’...

Types of Sexual Offenders

...types of sexual offenders Sexual offenders are a major problem in today’s society. There has been an increasingly amount of research done in order to fully understand, and identify the types of sexual offenders. Researchers are trying to focus on finding types of treatments that could help sexual offenders. Since there are a lot of different types of offenders, building a treatment program is seen as a difficult task. ...Canadian prisons have always been lacking the needs of offenders and programs to help them. Till now they have the same problem; however, they have been improving and meeting the needs of the offender’s population in a slow manner. Many incidents have occurred during prison time as well as after inmates have been released from prisons. Due to that Canadian corrections have slowly taken more time into their programs and treatments to help the inmates rehabilitate themselves and be able to get back into society in a better state than what they had arrived in. Overtime there have been many facilities available in order to help inmates with certain behavior issues and severe issues. In this paper I will be covering the different types of inmates and how each of them is treated with different programs. Incarceration rate has slowly been going down and there have been more treatment programs to help the offenders rather than just punishing them. Once again, in this paper, I will thoroughly explain how this is done with different types of offenders including; Women in gangs, impaired offenders, offenders who have been diagnosed with HCV (hepatitis C or AIDS), and sexual offenders. Not everyone will be getting treatments or put into programs in prison. Majority of the people are the ones who have a higher risk of danger when being put back into society; however, to prevent this, programs have been available in Canadian prisons. As you read on in this paper you will find out the different...

Annotated Bibliography

...Annotated Bibliography: What the Literature Says About Juvenile Sex Offenders The following articles, factsheets, and studies have been compiled to assist attorneys and individuals working on behalf of youth charged with sexual offending. The information contained in these resources aim to help others realize the fundamental differences between adult sex offenders and juvenile sex offenders, which include positive responses of juveniles to treatment, low recidivism rates of juveniles and negative impact of registries on youth development. It is our hope that this information will be used to improve legal outcomes for juvenile sex offenders, and uphold the purpose of the juvenile justice system as a rehabilitative, not punitive, system. PUBLICATIONS BY TOPIC Recidivism Rates/Amenability to Treatment Judith V. Risk-Need Responsivity Model

...Polaschek and King (2002) proposed individualised rehabilitation programs for violent sexual offenders (rapists), based on the parallels with general offender groups such as non-sexual violent offenders. Since these treatment program types are so rarely reported on it may be salient at this point to assert that the literature identifies a significant correlation between sexual offences by violent offenders. Lievore, (2004) suggests that clarification must be drawn to the point that some authors contend that frequencies of violent behaviour amongst sexual offenders are predominantly by violent offenders who also offend sexually. However a different set of processes contributes to sexual and violent recidivism. Moreover, designers of treatment...

Separation Of Sex Offenders In Prisons

...The majority of the public believes that when an offender serves their time in jail or prison, he or she will ultimately be free to go. However, that is not always the case. Sex offenders are often viewed as being potential recidivists, therefore certain states and the federal government have put laws in place to keep these potential offenders in prison. More than half the population of sexual predators which includes, rapists, pedophiles, and other sex offenders are held past their sentence on a recidivism assessment which is almost impossible to challenge. Legal procedures known as civil commitment can be determined or assessed by the sole opinion of a psychologist or expert. The law implemented serves as the people’s obligation to protect...

I will discuss some of the many programs offered by various states ranging from “Pets in Prison” to obtaining college degrees. I will explain the various types of counseling offered to sex offenders, pedophiles and murderers. Those are a few topics I feel should have special interest in the counseling/rehabilitation area. I am sure most would agree that prisoners should receive some type of counseling and rehabilitation, but where do you draw the line on the rehabilitation services offered? Should the money from taxpayers be used to fund certain types of programs, how does the prison system decide who gets to participate in which programs, and how can counselors and judicial boards ensure there will be no regression? Forensic Psychology

...patient is not something a forensic psychologist will do. Traditional psychological tests and interview procedures are usually not applicable when dealing with a forensic situation. In forensic evaluations it is important to assess the consistency of factual information. Forensic psychology is the application of psychology to the criminal justice system. This is however, different from forensic science. While a forensic psychology deals with legal issues, such as public policies, new laws, competency, and whether a person is sane at the time of a crime, they focus on the psychological perspectives involved in the legal system. Some examples of when forensic psychology is used in the criminal justice system are treating mentally ill offenders, consulting with attorneys, jury selection, serving as an expert witness, analyzing a criminal’s mind and intent, and criminal profiling. There are some forensic psychologists that choose to focus on research, which could range from the examination of eyewitness testimony, to improving interrogation methods. There are also forensic psychologists that focus on public policy, such as designing correctional facilities and prisons. In 1901 a man named William Stern studied memory by asking students to study a picture for forty-five seconds, and then recall what happened in the picture. This is when eyewitness testimonies began to lose credibility, because often times the participants were incorrect in explaining what happened in the picture...
