...Looking to the Future of Office Work It’s no secret that technology has completely changed the world we live in, and the use of technology is growing at an exponential rate. The use of technology within the work place is no different, and has many effects on the different aspects of a job. Clerical work has by tradition been manual processing, organizing, distributing, and maintaining different information for an organization but as technology continues to enter the work force, clerical jobs are being affected in a variety of ways. “Technology can change not only the content of jobs but also the number of clerical jobs” (Hodson & Sullivan pg. 316). It can be argued that technology will lead to both job growth and job elimination in regards to clerical work. Clerical work can consists of a lot of record keeping and coordination, and some aspects of the job can be done completely by computer now which may lead to the displacement of some clerical workers. The jobs that are likely to see the biggest decline are the non-customer facing jobs like switch board operators or typists. Deskilling may occur because the tasks that once needed to be completed manually are now completed by a machine or computer. Because the worker in this case is no longer using his/her skills, they become deskilled and automation takes over. Inevitably, this may lead to these jobs becoming obsolete and ultimately eliminated. In contrast, many clerical jobs should stay strong even with the implementation...

...The Empowerment of the Future of Women “Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult”, Charlotte Whitton (The Soul Sisters). Hilary Clinton, Sarah Palin, and Oprah Winfrey are just a few names who have taken women leadership to the next level. But why does progress still seem to be a struggle for other women? Men seem to be dominating the political world in the U.S., and females seem to be striving to be the next powerhouses, but their professional image seems to be standing in the way of their future. Although women have made significant progress in obtaining low level leadership positions, their professional image continues to prevent them from receiving these same positions in higher forms. Political standards for future female candidates have become increasingly difficult to fulfill. The claim made for women not obtaining these higher level positions is simply because women are “less hierarchical, more cooperative and collaborative, and more oriented increasing other’s self-worth” (Eagly, pg. 2). Candidates for the job must be “likeable and tough” (Braude), which is seemingly become more and more difficult for female leaders these days when men are strong participants with these characteristics. When one wants to put a female and a male in a rink together, who would come out on top? The obvious choice would be the male, but it is not time to give a female the chance? The opportunity for women leaders...

...Customers, future Customers The most important stakeholders of your business are your current clients and future clients. The current business process and challenges are affecting them as below: Clients provide copy of their supporting documents such as passport to the office. But since the office stores these documents on location which is accessible to that office only, when needed, other office often ask same documents again from the client. This could affect the client satisfaction. At the time of travel, employees often need updated documents and since they do not have quick access to those documents, they ask customers which makes customers unhappy because same information is asked many times. Sometimes Customers make change in their travel plan or update details they had provided initially. They inform one office about their change in plan. But since the latest details are not communicated to all concerned employees, employees often use outdated details to make business. ...mid-1800s, and Steeley Associates restored it. For almost a decade, Steeley has leased it to the university for academic office space. The house is located on a wide lawn and has become a town landmark. However, in 2003, the lease with the university expired, and Steeley Associates decided to build high-density student apartments on the site, using all the open space. The community was outraged and objected to the town council. The legal counsel for the town spoke with a representative from Steeley and hinted that if Steeley requested a permit, the town would probably reject it. Steeley had reviewed the town building code and felt confident that its plan was within the guidelines, but that did not necessarily mean that it could win a lawsuit against the town to force the town to grant a permit. The principals of Steeley Associates held a series of meetings to review their alternatives. They decided that they had three options: they would request the permit, they could sell the property, or they could request a permit for a low-density office building, which the town had indicated it would not fight. Regarding the last two options, if they sell the house and property, they think they can get $900,000. If they build a new office building, their return will depend on town business growth in the future. They feel that there is a 70% chance of future growth, in which case they will see a return of $1.3 million (over a 10-year planning horizon); if no growth (or erosion)...

...very simple – trading futures on the Nikkei 225 as the underlying. The Nikkei 225 was traded as a future on both the SIMEX and the Osaka markets. There were always known to be differences between the two markets which could be arbitraged. The idea was to exploit the differences between the 2 markets , and execute in the cheaper market on client orders. This would then allow Barings to net a profit as they execute in the cheaper market but quote the client the price in the more expensive market. The underlying idea was of course to always be long one and short the other. Leeson was long Nikkei 225 futures, short Japanese government bond futures, and short both put and call options on the Nikkei Index. He was betting that the Nikkei index would rise, but instead, it fell, causing him to lose $1.39 billion. 2. What went wrong that caused his strategy to fail? Nick Leeson’s strategy failed because the Nikkei 225 index kept falling while he continued to bet that it would rise. On the 17th of January 1995 a huge earthquake struck Kobe in Japan. The Nikkei plummeted putting Leeson’s positions under a lot of stress. The Nikkei plunged to 17950 by the end of that week and Leeson started recording big losses. Leeson’s solution was however to ask for extra funds from London to meet his margin calls and continue trading. His view was that the move down on the Nikkei was temporary and he could ride it out. In the weeks that followed he almost doubled his futures position to 55,000 contracts...
