Land (2014), "The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail” (para. 20). All organizations big and small battle to have a competitive advantage to stay afloat of be number one in the business. By innovation, creativity, and design companies are able to pull ahead and remain in the business world. Innovation, creativity, and design have three very different definitions but have some similarities and all three components to a company’s survival.
Fist definition is innovation, innovation according to “Businessdictionary.com” (2014), "is the process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay” (para. 1). In the reading, innovation is broken down into two components. One is creativity, and the second is implementation. Implementation is when we take this great thought or idea and put it to practice. The second term is creativity; creativity is an idea or thought. “Creativity is an essential part of innovation – it is the point of departure” (Stamm, 2008, p. 3). The second definition that will be defined is creativity, creativity according to “Businessdictionary.com” (2014), “is a mental characteristic that allows a person to think outside of the box, which results in innovative or different approaches to a particular task” (para. 1). Lastly we have design, design is “as the conscious decision-making process by which information, as an idea, is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible or intangible” (Stamm, 2008, p. 18). Stamm also writes three different definitions in the book and one relates with creativity. The definition states that design is a “creative activity” (Stamm, 2008, p.18). It seems that even though all three have a different meaning by itself but put them together and you have a formula for success.
Innovation, creativity, and design have three very different definitions but have some similarities and all three components to a company’s survival. By utilizing all three, components, together gives any company a great competitive advantage. As said in class by Howard it is like a wheel if one piece is not well put together it will not spin smoothly.
