The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Cultural Viability (Case 25)

The following is a general environmental analysis of the ultimate fighting championship the business sector of the mixed martial art industry, with an analysis of UFC. The first section of this report will cover an overview of the trends in technology demographics, economics, political/legal, and social/cultural-global.
Political/ Legal
From the government side there always have been concerns for UFC for the safety of those who are involved in the sports because the first six UFC events had no time limits, no mandatory safety equipment and very few rules and also many observers assumed that “you’d have to have a death wish or at least be a little unhinged-to put yourself in that arena.” Which lead Senator John McCain started a campaign to ban the UFC; many agreed that the sport is too violent. Result of that the UFC is still illegal in the USA state for example New York, and lawsuits blocked it in other areas as well.
Socio-cultural and Global UFC is becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the worlds. Many people around the world watching wrestling, and showing interest to this extreme form of sport. UFC start holding event globally, and “UFC programming reaches more than 416 million household worldwide via channels in Europe, Australia, South America, in Asia, middle east and also in North Africa.” which is why UFC is becoming popular around the world. The increasing number of audience around the world is an opportunity that UFC should take advantage of it.

Technology The internet is getting bigger and better day by day and also in mobile technology people are now able to watch anything on their cell phone. UFC has outlet their live event in pay per view (PPV). To watch live event or big championship game you have to purchase pay per view. ‘In 2009, a highly successful video game, UFC Undisputed, was launched. The game was so popular that new version of the game was launched in 2010.” To gain popularity UFC is taking advantage of such technologies.
Demographics
“The size of the UFC fan base in the United States is estimated to be approximately 31 million people. The primary viewing demographic of the UFC was to be men aged 18 to 34; In the USA the UFC fan base is estimated to be approximately 11 million people of 35% overall fan base.”
Economy:
After the recession the economy of USA seems to be in a stable position and slowly gaining. “The USA GDP will be increasing in upcoming year by 2.2% and the world GDP in 2014 will be 2.9%” (Economic intelligence unit). This is an opportunity for UFC to build on, since the world economy is taking an positive turn after a recession. USA still expects unemployment to average 9.2 in 2011 (Economist Intelligent Unit). This might be a bad for UFC because those who are unemployed have less motivation for purchasing and spending.

Porter’s five points. * Competitive rivalry (high) The competitive rivalry is high because UFC would face competition from within its industry. The fighting show like WWE, people are crazy about WWE and which also had and has popular fighters such as Rock, Triple H, and Undertaker. It also can face competition from other MMA promotion such as DREAM, Strike force which also has famous fighters like ICON. * Barrier of Entry (low) The barrier of entry is low because we all know that UFC is growing very quickly around the world and people are switching there interest to UFC. The brand name Ultimate fighting championship can be a firm’s most valuable asset. A brand name is a firm’s promise for quality and consistency. Fans tend to gather toward what they know. * Substitute (low) The substitute is low in UFC because UFC is hard to substitutable because UFC is not a traditional sport such as baseball and football. UFC is totally is different sport it is fighting sport. And product such as sugar cane and whisky are easily to substitutable but not UFC. The UFC continually mentions MMA’s more dynamic striking, and more fighting it was * Power of supplier (moderate) The power of supplier is moderate in UFC because as I mention UFC is becoming popular and people are switching there interest to UFC. We have many suppliers for UFC such as internet, cable, Pay per view, fighters gym etc. Also we have many suppliers for UFC game such as GameStop, BestBuy. * Power of buyer (moderate) The power of buyer is moderate in UFC because UFC is becoming popular around the world and they have started showing there live event via PPV or TV channels. Most people do not know about the UFC as they find out about UFC people will buy TV channel and purchase PPV to watch live event of UFC. Also UFC has launched its video game which is popular too. Competitor Analysis UFC are facing big completion from other MMA promotion such as DREAM which has popular fighter and also the other MMA promotion Strikeforce which has popular fighters like ICON. UFC also faces completion from other fighting sports such as Boxing, WWE which had and has very popular fighter such as Steve Austin, Rock, Undertaker, Shawn Michael and Triple H. UFC should consider the threat of such competition. Internal Analysis
UFC has a strong league of fighters such as brock lesner, Anderson Silva etc. with the help of its strong brand and market position it is able to recruit fighters with relatively low cost. UFC position in the markets is high and strong- a major strength in this industry as they are ahead of many rivals. UFC also a market leader in MMA; this is strength for UFC. UFC unleashed their popular game; popular shows such as The Ultimate Fighter are major strength of UFC. UFC broadcast their show all around the world and large amount of people are switching their interest to UFC and also UFC doing there championship event in Australia, Canada etc. which is making UFC popular and it is strength of UFC. A problem UFC should consider is the injuries of the fighters that might create a fighter scheduled fights.

Alternative strategies After examining all the factors involved one of the strategic move that UFC can take is penetration of the US market. Competition is rising in the US market as more MMA promotions are making their way to the people. UFC should focus on their core fan base and try to focus on the regions within the United Stated if they want to avoid losing market share to their competitions. UFC brand image in the field of MMA is strength that they should make good use of and increase their promotional activities such as advertising to each more of their target market. UFC should do their shows or main event frequently to other countries which will help UFC to gain more popularity.
