...I have wrinkly and dry hands. I grew up with eczema and other skin problems that ended up making my hands look as if they were old enough to have grandchildren. I relayed this to an elderly patient I was working with at the assisted living home I interned at as she marvelled at the not far comparison her and my hands shared. The occupational therapist had me do some hand strengthening and mobility exercises with her patients so I sat with an older resident with Parkinson's and we picked up pennies and pinched putty together. The neural issues in her right hand made it difficult to clench and unclench, but it didn’t stop her from holding my hand into hers to tell me that I was doing a fine job interning with her OT and that my old hands were going to do a lot of good in the future. This was my introduction to what occupational therapy did with others and it became my invitation to learn and do more....

...like. Notice how well this student clearly related each infant behavior to some aspect of Piaget’s account of the sensorimotor period: He stated which substage of the sensorimotor period the child probably is in, and tied the notions of assimilation and accommodation to specific infant behaviors. Observation Paper #1 A couple (husband and wife) were sitting on the grass at a music festival with a young male infant, who was probably between 12-18 months old. He sat on his mother's lap with a group of the adult's friends around them. They were sitting together on a blanket with a clearing in the middle for the child to play and move around while they all enjoyed the music and talked to each other. As I was sitting there, I observed the infant's mother hand him a small box of wheat thins which he easily grasped in his hands and held, looking at it for a little while. Then he dropped the box which hit his mother's foot and rustled to the ground. His mother picked the box back up for him and put it back into his hands. He then dropped it again on her foot and it landed again on the ground next to them. According to Piaget the child is in substage 5 of the sensorimotor period. The child is testing the cause and effect of his dropping the box of wheat thins on his mother's foot next to him. He is causing the box to fall, and then watching and studying it as it bounces off her foot and finally rests on the ground (causing a rustling noise from the crackers). Piaget would also...

...September 28, 2013 Michaelia Henry ID No. 0210073 M.Arch 1 Course: Critical Theories in Architecture Lecturer: Arch. Jacquiann Lawton Critical Theories in Architecture: Modernity Exploring Research Methodology – Writing Dialectical History Thesis Statement Craftsmanship is the basic human impulse to do a job well for its own sake. It involves Creative Thought, Precision, Apprenticeship, Crafting an Object Well, adhering to The Structure of the Workshop and the Practice of the Intelligent Hand. Contemporary Jamaican Woodcraft is an example of Craftsmanship. Introduction Fashioning furniture, doors, windows and other architectural elements out of timber is an old practice. Before the industrial period, many of these items would be crafted by hand. The effort and care taken to create each piece; seen in the final product. This is one way of romanticizing traditional woodwork. A more cynical view would be to criticize the minor imperfections of these pieces – the uneven pattern created by carving by hand, the lack of perfect symmetry in the manmade spindle form. This cynical view has some validity – if; the priority of making the object is the actualization of perfection. Social commentators like Richard Sennett believe this kind of priority misses the true point of Craftsmanship – the desire to do something well for its own sake. I agree. The actualization of Craftsmanship is not about the making a perfect object. It is about the intrinsic need to do a job well for its own sake. There...

...novel approach for grasping that only uses local 3-D information acquired from sensors. Given data of the environment from 3-D sensors, our algorithm generates arm/hand configurations that may potentially achieve a good grasp, then computes features of these candidates to select the best candidate and execute its grasp. These features capture desirable properties of potential grasps based on sensor data, which our learning algorithm then uses to predict how likely the grasp will be successful. This algorithm was tested on STAIR in real-world grasping of single objects and of objects in cluttered environments. Significant improvements in both cases were found. Introduction As the field of artificial intelligence becomes increasingly advanced and integrated, it is time to revisit the half-century old “AIDream,” where intelligent robotic agents were envisioned to interact with the general human population. To this end, the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Robot (STAIR) project aims to introduce robots into home and office environments, where they will facilitate and cooperate with people directly. In order for robots to have any non-trivial use in such environments, they must have the ability to manipulate objects, which is provided through robotic arms. An arm usually has a manipulator “hand”...

...Chapter 11: Case Three: Lifebuoy/Unilever Asia Private Limited, p. 168 1. The camera follows a little boy around his back yard and through the wooded lot to the old baseball diamond, before he makes his way down an alley to his best friend’s house. Along the way his hands encounter a multitude of things from bugs to a frog and an old toy he found in the trash while walking down the alley. While at his friend’s house his mother calls him home for supper and his hands make contact with even more questionable substance! Upon entering his house his mother tells him to wash his hands so hastily he washes his hand and hurries to the table. He jumps up on his chair and reaches for a drum stich as hastily as he washed his hands. Just before his hand reaches the drum stick the camera freezes. The camera then pans in on his hand to a microscopic level revealing no germs before panning back out and sending everything back into motion as the family scurries to the dining room table to eat. The commercial ends as the camera pans in on the bottle of Lifebuoy soap on the bathroom sink. 2. Lifebuoy’s first attempt to market this new hand soap was based on its lab proven ability to kill more germs than the leading competitor. Consumers where so convinced their brand was better they did not believe Lifebuoy’s claims. Lifebuoy was determined not to make the same mistake twice and thus searched for another angle. While observing children an associate had an idea; tie the faster acting more effective...

...updated: November 2008 Highlights What are finger foods? When should I introduce finger foods? How should I introduce the finger food? Which foods make the best finger foods? What are finger foods? Just about any bite-size piece of food that your baby can pick up and eat by himself could qualify as a finger food. Not only is eating finger food fun for your baby, it's an important early step toward independence that also helps him develop his fine motor skills and coordination. Food play can get messy, but don't be too quick with the washcloth: Let your baby enjoy this important hands-on learning experience. When should I introduce finger foods? When your baby's between 7 and 9 months old, he'll probably let you know that he's ready to start feeding himself — by grabbing the spoon you're feeding him with or snatching food off your plate. At first, your baby may just rake food into his hand and bring it to his mouth, but eventually he'll figure out how to use his thumb and forefinger to pick up food. This fine motor skill milestone is called the pincer grasp. How should I introduce the finger food? Simply scatter four or five pieces of finger food onto your baby's highchair tray or an unbreakable plate. You can add more as your baby eats them. Feeding your baby in a highchair rather than in a car seat or stroller will reduce the risk of choking and teach him that a highchair is the place to eat. Which foods make the best finger foods? Your baby may have a good appetite...

...enzymes, my eyes felt heavy as if there were a bag of stones on them, my head began to feel dizzy and then my head suddenly hit the table. When I opened my eyes, I saw light all around me, I thought I was dreaming but then Dr. Chuck’s voice was all around me again, I groaned and then he said something about having too much sugar. My vision came back, I looked at the board, on it were graphs and tables that I didn't understand. As my elbow hit the pen beside me, it fell and rolled to the tile beside me, I rolled my eyes at nothing in particular because I was too lazy to get it. Suddenly, a hand touched me, I jerked a few centimeters away because I was pretty sure that no one was sitting beside me. I looked up and saw the cutest face ever. He smiled at me and handed me back my pen. But I just gawked at him. I looked up and down at him, I could swear my eyes were bulging. He was around 16 years old. He opened his mouth to speak but Dr. Chuck banged his stick on the leg of the table. Shush! He shouted. He then looked at the boy beside me: “Four,” he said. “What are you doing here?” Four, got up and talked in low voices with Dr. Chuck. As he came beside me, he smiled and then...

...free to read it. Enjoy! WHY WE WIN: THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH First let's explain exactly why beating the micro limits is so easy. I think knowing why what you're doing works is extremely helpful when you're learning. Poker is a game of skill, like chess or backgammon. The short term goal of poker is to win money, but the underlying goal of any game like poker or chess isn't actually to 'win'. The goal is to make fewer mistakes than your opponent. If you make fewer mistakes, you win by default. The only time this isn't true is when some inherent luck is involved, as it is in poker. Bad play in poker can win, but only in the short term. The Fundamental Theorem of Poker as presented by David Sklansky is as follows: “Every time you play a hand differently from the way...

...orifice.” Another interesting body gesture is the way you sit in a chair. If you were in the presence of some Muslims or Thai people you would not want to cross your legs when you sit down. The foot is considered the lowest part of the body, physically as well as spiritually in Middle Eastern countries and Thailand. It is also offending to reach for more food in Pakistan with your left hand, because it is seen as being unclean. The left hand is to wash your private areas in Pakistan. Another body gesture that is unusual is sticking your tongue out at another person. In the United States, sticking your tongue out at another person means your being silly or being “punk’d.” But, in some parts of Tibet, sticking your tongue out at another person is a way of greeting people. One of the most disrespectful body gestures in the United States is spitting on another person. But, if you find yourself at a wedding in Kenya, spitting on the head is a form of blessing. Although, this old tradition is fading away, when Kenyans shake hands the older of the two will spit in his hands before hand. This means he is transferring the goodness of his saliva to another as a blessing. The “thumbs up” body gesture means “ok” or “good” in the United States, but in the Middle East it means you want to have sexual relations with the person you are giving the “thumbs up” to. The last body gesture I learned about is getting into a cab in Australia. In the United States we are used to getting...

...The First Man I Ever Loved Everything reminds me of him. When I see a little kid running around with a mass of curly hair I picture his hair; his black curly-q hair with streaks of gray that shimmer in the sunlight. I see the tiny spot on the top of his head that is beginning to bald, and smile when I think about how I always have to put sunblock on it because he denies his old age. When I drive by a house with a pretty little garden I remember all the hours he put into making his own garden perfect. I reflect on countless memories of him and me working and chatting as we weeded, hoed, planted, and tended to the garden. He used to call me his “Bean Queen” because when it was time to pick beans we would have a contest to see who could find the biggest bean as motivation to keep picking. By the end of the day his back and chest would be as red as a tomato from the sun. I would always push my hand into his red skin and quickly pull it away to reveal a quickly fading handprint. He would grin his goofy grin and shoo me away. When I see a school bus drive down the road I think about the routine we had every day after school. I would come home and do homework until he came home from work. When I heard his sweet, booming voice I would run down the stairs and give him a hug like I had never hugged him before. I would tell him all about my day while he flipped through the mail. Even after long days at work he would listen to me go on and on about every little detail of my day. When...
