Environmental Health Term Paper: Childhood Obesity in Low Socioeconomic Status Communities
Jordan Landers
Florida State University

Abstract
Obesity is at an all time high in the Unites States, affecting 35% of adults and 17% of children. Childhood obesity can be very detrimental causing emotional, physical, and social strain on the lives of adolescents. Those that are affected the most are citizens that live in low socioeconomic status communities due to lack of education and lack of resources. There are shortages of grocery stores and markets that offer fresh fruits and vegetables thus communities rely on fast food restaurants and convenient stores for food. Furthermore lack of fresh food coupled with physical inactivity is the main reason for the rise of childhood obesity and obesity in general in the past 30 years. Creating safe places for children to play as well as providing food and resources is the only way to eliminate the ongoing obesity epidemic.

Growing up there has always been a certain degree of importance placed on the diet and living a healthy lifestyle to live a long and successful life. As of late there has been a boom in fitness sales, gym memberships, and importance on diet and quality food consumption, yet in the past 30 years the United States has seen a drastic increase in the amount of obese individuals. With social media and so many other health initiatives taking place across the country, why is there still a rise in obesity levels amongst adolescents and adults? This shift in weight can be attributed to numerous sources such as fast food consumption, overall poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and a shift on career focus, but one of the main factors that people often don’t take into account is how financial constraint can affect ones health. If one does not have the financial security, they often live in communities that have low

Old West Research Paper

...Dylan Winstead    Mr. Trenary AP US History 12 January 2018     The Development of the West     Life in the Old West or also known as the ‘Wild West” was probably different than what you might think. When many people think of the Wild West, they think of  gunslingers and people constantly robbing banks, but in reality, this was very much not true. In the early 1800’s, many Americans considered the west “unfit” for civilization. However, later on, several amounts of  people started migrating towards the west because of its farming and agricultural opportunities. Many people became farmers, ranchers, and even miners because of the land’s rich soil and its natural resources. Just think, if it wasn’t for these Americans, the development of the...

Old Paper

...Over the past 40 years, Newark has gone through tumultuous racial segregation. From the very beginning, Newark has been ever changing especially socially following the Newark Riots of 1967. In an effort to redevelop Newark, our African American residents still suffers as a result of its revitalization. Through the social shifts of the 1950’s, Newark’s people of color have endured unfortunate circumstance due to the change in the city’s government, poor housing, and troubles in the economy. With hopes to pursue a new life, many African American families migrated to the northern states with the thought of living a dream that guarantees a home, job and free education for their children. After escaping Jim Crow and his segregated laws, many African Americans soon had seen that battle was only half fought. An influx of poor, uneducated, unskilled, African Americans came up north to take advantage of the greater job opportunities and the higher welfare benefits here. Prior to the migration of southern blacks the city of Newark had already been structured by its people. People were separated by ward. Newark was, and still is the most diverse city in this city. In Newark, injustice was directed toward African American residents living in the poverty stricken Central Ward. Its five wards are split apart and essentially segregated. The West Ward, once known as predominantly Irish-American neighborhood today is home to neighborhoods composed primarily of African-Americans and Haitians...

Old Management Paper

...Management 338B International Business U.S. Regulators Bar TransCanada From Restarting Keystone Pipeline The article I read relates to the company TransCanada Corp. from restarting its pipeline due to two small spills. According to the authors, Lefebvre and Cummins, The United States Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Harzardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), is requiring that the company must perform specific safety tests and root-cause analysis to address two separate spills that resulted in the loss of approximately 410 barrels of oil (400 in one spill and 10 in another). The company states that they are complying with the US governments requests but that the leaks have been caused by unrelated technical problems. The article points out that this comes in a period of time that the company is requesting to expand its pipeline to the Gulf cost of the United States. This expansion also being contested by environmentalist organizations in the United States who feel that the form of crude being piped in is more corrosive and damaging to the environment. Transcanada denies this and Canada’s government has cited “years of pipeline operation” to demonstrate that the “oil Sands” are no more likely to leak that traditional oil. I thought this article points out the complexities of during business in foreign countries. The company, TransCanada has to not only comply with regulations of its own country but meet standards and requests of countries...

Lollipop Rough Draft

...It was a few minutes after 10pm on a Monday night and I had just remembered that my rough draft essay for my dual enrollment English class was due the next day. Even though I wrote the date it was due down, I always pushed it off to do “another day”, well another day became that night. I had to write 500 descriptive words about the nature of opening and eating a tootsie pop; I didn’t even have a tootsie pop. I knew I would have to improvise, so I grabbed the old lollipop in my pantry and started opening it. As I opened the lollipop I wrote down descriptive thought I had. I started with the sound I heard, I wrote down “crispy crackling”, then I thought about how it looked “hard, glazed strawberry”. Before I knew it the lollipop was gone,...

Paper Brigguetes

...How to Make Charcoal from Paper By Karren Doll Tolliver, eHow Contributor Homemade paper charcoal briquettes can be used in backyard grills.  Commercial charcoal for grilling food is expensive and can be harmful to the environment. However, industrious do-it-yourselves can make their own "charcoal" from newspaper. This reduces the amount of newspaper refuse as well as the amount of commercial charcoal consumed. In addition, no lighter fluid is needed with the homemade charcoal paper. Therefore, petroleum-based products are also conserved. Making your own charcoal takes only water and a washtub. The time spent forming the charcoal paper briquettes is negligible, although they need to dry for a couple of days in the sun. Things You'll Need • Washtub • Water • Old newspaper Instructions 1 Tear the old newspaper into pieces about the size of your hand or smaller. 2 Place all the torn newspaper pieces in the washtub. Cover with water and let sit for at least one hour. The newspaper will be ready when it is thoroughly saturated with water and is mushy to the touch. 3 Grab a large handful of the mushy newspaper. Form it into a ball about the size of a golf ball or ping pong ball, squeezing out as much water as you can. Repeat until all the mushy newspaper is in ball form. Discard the water. 4 Place the wet newspaper balls in the sun for at least two days. Do not let them get rained on. They must be completely dry and brittle. At this point they are ready for use in the same...

Books Will Always Exist

...Our homes are full of books of every genre. There are only few people who don't like reading. Accordingly, even the most lazy can't help but keeping on reading if the story is enough engaging. The most of times in our homes we find physical books, rather than digital stories. I think there is a reason for this. What is better than the smell of paper, especially when you buy a new book? It is something inimitable, that never will be replaced. Concerning to this, we cannot not talk about the smell of old books. It reminds you something ancient, of another epoch or of a parallel world. Something beset by an aura of fantastic. On the one hand, I think many people prefer to buy new books, rather than borrow them in library, due to the characteristic smell of brand new printed paper. However, the smell of ancient books cannot be recreated and that’s why, on the other hand, library are so full of requests. There are those who neither care to have their own literary works, nor library books. Actually, they don’t want physical volumes and prefer to have all they would want to read always with them. In other words, they like digital readings. For instance, a tablet make this real. This means you can choose among a great number of possibilities the book you want to read in that particular moment. The advantage consists in the fact that you have not to bring ten different volumes with you, but just one light tablet. Your back will thank you! Likewise, many people prefer digital books...

Activities for Health and Well Being

...Health and Social Care Activities for health and well being Introduction The unit requires me to manage an activity in a health and social care environment which will benefit an individual or a small group of service users, the activity will allow me to work on my communication skills with contrasting age groups. With the activities I have designed I would have to take into account the physical, intellectual, social and emotional side of each child. For this I will be visiting Woodend Preschool where I will be holding an activity to evaluate the children's skills and assessing how well we communicate between each other, by the way our body language comes across. Before making my final decision about the activity, I will have to take into consideration the skills each child has, the facilities, safety implications, equipment and time. Also I have to plan, improve and evaluate my activity; I have also made samples for each of my activities. The preschool and early school years are also full of changes, from three to five the child’s motor skills, language, thinking and social development change dramatically. A01- Suitable Activities and Reasons for Choice I have created a range of activities that would be suitable for Pre-schoolers aged between three to four, at this point in their life the child's development is important, it is a time where the child’s world will be dominated by fantasy and vivid imagination. Banana Stalk Paper

...B-Stalk Paper Background of the Study Paper is a felted sheet of usually fibers laid down on a fine screen from a water suspension. It is commonly used by everyone especially students and employees for their activities, reports and quizzes. It is also used for writing, printing and packaging materials in many products especially now that “No Plastics” campaigns are implemented. According to Wikipedia (2013), the environmental impact of paper is significant, which has led to changes in industry and behavior at both business and personal levels. With the use of modern technology such as the printing press and the highly mechanized harvesting of wood, disposable paper has become a cheap commodity. This has led to a high level of consumption and waste. With the rise in environmental awareness due to the lobbying by environmental organizations and with increased government regulation there is now a trend towards sustainability in the pulp and paper industry. Worldwide consumption of paper has risen by 400% in the past 40 years, with 35% of harvested trees being used for paper manufacture. Plantation forest, from where the majority of wood for pulping is obtained, is generally a monoculture and this raises concerns over the ecological effects of the practice. Our proposed business is intended to reduce the deforestation issue worldwide. That’s why we created an eco-friendly paper instead of cutting down old trees in the forest. We recycled the stalk of a banana plant to produce...
