...In her essay “Women Talk Too Much,” Jonet Holmes argues that to dominate talking depends on many different factors, including the social context in which the talk is taking place, relative social confidence and perception (299-304). By contrast, Ronald Macaulay declares his statement in his article “Sex Difference” that language use and development as a result of the social environment have a great impact on the talking between women and men, not the sex differences in language (307-313). It is explicit that both Holmes and Macaulay express their personal perspectives about the similar purpose of talking, the dissimilar factors of language development and the perception of language that could affect their conversational style. In Holmes’ article, she told about the purpose of talking in public between man and women, “Formal public talk is often aimed at information people or persuading them to agree to a particular point of view” (301). She agrees that public talk is often undertaken by those who emphasize their degrees of public status. In addition, when the men have an effective talk in public, the purpose of the speech is to improve their social status. In private context, women contribute to establish social contact with others and develop personal relationship. Likewise, Macaulay illustrated his opinion in his article that those different social positions would affect the talking between women and men. “It is also obvious that those in a position of power often expect...

...The role visual style plays in communicating the ideas, themes and issues raised by the film Before to the introduction of ‘auteur theory’ Douglas Sirk directed films that were illustrious for classical Hollywood narrative. However, he used his power as director to step outside of the Mainstream Hollywood narrative and stylistic conventions (Core 1994), using techniques such as mise-en-scene to communicate the ideas, themes and issues raised in his films. All That Heaven Allows directed by Sirk is a perfect example of his clever use of visual style to communicate themes of social status, repression and nature. The film was popular at its release as ‘critics were well aware that Sirk's films attracted a humorous popular reception’ (Philip Core p132) but was critically dismissed as a women’s weeping movie (Nick James, 1994). Told from a women's point of view and post WWII exposure gives a sense of context and what life was like for women of the time. As Carrie quotes from ‘walden’s book’ it becomes evident that mise-en-scene enriches the film and gets an insight into post WW2 life. Carrie is trapped, however it is not just the dialogue of the film that is used to expose her entrapment. Carrie is represented as a prisoner in her own home. The use of the TV double comments on what Carrie is going through. Sirk presents the television as a symbol of repression and defeat, a tiresome life. Sirk uses the television set to explore the theme of Carrie as an onlooker on life and...

...In the book The Kite Runner, original social status is proven to create barriers in life regarding the aspects of friendship, mindset, and adaptation to change as we observe Baba’s and Amir’s life journeys in order to discover how it affects these aspects. Amir’s friendship with his hazara servant’s son Hassan takes a sudden toll as he ultimately comes to believe that traditional and historical beliefs outweighed true friendship as he was a young child. The mindset of Baba does not adjust when he and Amir are forced to move to America, as he still believes he possesses the same amount of power as he did in Afghanistan. While living in America, Baba never fully adapts to the American culture and way of life as he continues to live and act the way he would when he was back home. Baba showed this through his attire, and gestures while out in public and at work. Through the many examples in the book, alongside of studied evidence, there is a clear correlation between original social status and barriers which are presented when it comes to friendship, mindset, and the adaptation to change. Being born a Poshtun boy into a wealthy family, Amir is expected to portray specific qualities of a man and society expects him to associate himself with a particular crowd as this factor influences his friendship with Hassan. Baba pressures Amir to portray qualities of a masculine man, such as being aggressive and violent, which is not in Amir’s nature. Baba motivates Amir by comparing him to...

After reading this there will be a better understanding of how we value clients and their overall well-being. As individuals age, they face many obstacles that can put limits on their lives. For example: “When older adults lose the capacity to drive a vehicle, it severely restricts their social interactions, is an assault on their mental well-being, and lessens their independence.” (Biological Aspects of Later Adulthood, Chpt. 14, pg. 590) After losing the basic abilities that enabled them to venture on their own some begin to go into withdrawal and sometimes even depression. Their roles have been shortchanged and their knowledge is undervalued or seldom used. ...it. I remember in high school, more specifically sophomore year, I was lucky and thankful enough to be the recipient of a substantial gift from my parents. For my 16th birthday they gifted me with a $15,000 check and said to spend it wisely. I could not believe it, I was so ecstatic and shocked I had no idea what to do. After a few days of careful consideration, I finally decided buying a car would be the best investment at the time. I did what most people do and bought myself a car, a BMW. Little did I know that the BMW would come with negative judgments from my high school peers. In the eyes of my peers I was known as the rich snobby kid who used his parents’ money to buy himself a flashy BMW to boast about. I was placed into a virtual social class of sort, being “better than everyone.” I was viewed as a selfish show-off, called rude and unwanted names just because of the car I owned. But this could not be farther from the truth. In no way did I feel better than anyone else, nor did I ever boast about having a fairly decent car for my age. But of course in our society, what I said did not matter, everyone judged me by the car I drove. I was left with feelings of sadness, dissatisfaction, and disappointment. I almost wanted to sell my car because I knew that would be the only way to make the judgments disappear. In James Twitchell’s Two Cheers for Materialism, he discusses the emphasis that our society puts on materialism. He supported that fact that in our modern society we buy...

...others in terms of their possessions, advertising takes advantage of this kind of thinking and manipulates our society into buying their product. Without advertising, these goods would have no variety or distinguishable characteristics and could not allow conspicuous consumption. In today's society, people are no longer afraid to put their lavishness and self indulgences on display. Advertising easily influences their target audience into buying their product because in doing so, they remind others that they have status, power, and wealth. Aesthetic trumps function when it comes to our possessions (Krahmer 22). Apple is constantly developing and releasing new technology when their current models suffice and unsurprisingly, the masses flock to these retail establishments in order to buy the latest model. It is not uncommon to see people camp outside of an Apple store days before the release of a new product. Due to their advertising campaigns, Apple has now become a status symbol for the wealthy. Although that iPhone has become a common sight in our society, it still seen as a luxury and emanates an air of prestige. Having the latest model of the iPhone or Macbook means that “we've made it.” Technology isn't the only area where consumers buy based on looks and brand. Profits on luxury cars tend to be higher than for other models. Fancy cars have always appealed to everyone, wether they belong to the lower, middle, or upper class. However, it is only the upper class that are...

...Pakistan. The respondents for this study were 10th grade students (300 male & 300 female). A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire for information gathering about different factors relating to academic performance of students. The academic performance was gauged by the result of their 9th grade annual examination. Standard t-test and ANOVA were applied to investigate the effect of different factors on students’ achievement. The results of the study revealed that socio-economic status (SES) and parents’ education have a significant effect on students’ overall academic achievement as well as achievement in the subjects of Mathematics and English. The high and average socio-economic level affects the performance more than the lower level. It is very interesting that parents’ education means more than their occupation in relation to their children’s academic performance at school. It was found that girls perform better than the male students. Keywords: Quality performance, achievement, socioeconomic status, demographic factors, gender and academic achievement. INTRODUCTION In this era of globalization and technological revolution, education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and is linked with an individual’s well-being and opportunities for better living (Battle & Lewis, 2002). It ensures the acquisition of...

...these wives. The researchers’ motivation of choosing this topic had been influenced by the everyday situation of people they knew who had experienced being separated to their husbands due to infidelity. Also, the media had contributed to their choice because nowadays, infidelity has been featured to many movies, television shows and social media sites. In this study, the researchers have employed a descriptive design. The participants involved in this research were 40 wives, age ranging from 25 to 65 years old and coming from different cities and towns of Pampanga, who have experienced infidelity of their husbands. Their sample was gathered through snowball sampling. For their theoretical framework, the researchers used the Lazarus model of stress and model of behavioral self-regulation. To quantify it, they used the Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (COPE) inventory of Carver, Scheier, and Weintraub (1989). With the help of a professor, they have translated the inventory for their Filipino participants. They have also developed a demographic profile checklist. There were five variables in the checklist which were age, socio economic status, educational attainment, religion and occupation. The results showed that majority of the wives used turning to religion (emotion-focused), positive reinterpretation (emotion-focused), planning (problem-focused), and active coping (problem focused) as their coping strategies which garnered the highest scores respectively. Older wives...

...puts students into a full learning mindset. I think students should wear uniforms because of three reasons: it reduces bullying, combines social classes, and keeps students focused on their education. One goal a lot of schools have in common is to reduce the amount of bullying and uniforms do just that. Roughly 160,000 students miss school daily due to the fear of attack and/or intimidation by other students. (Source B). Without uniforms, students often get bullied or picked on for what they may be wearing. Those number of students continue to increase in number every month. Even President Clinton made a statement encouraging the use of school uniforms in February 1996 as a crucial part of a program to improve the safety within the school, in addition to discipline. With uniforms, everyone would be similarly dressed, which gives bullies less of an excuse to pick on someone. (Source A). Subsequently, uniforms would promote a more bully-free environment for both the students and the school. Schools that require uniforms also combine social classes. This ties in with bullying as there is a relationship between wealth and bullying. While students in schools with uniform policies have no way of distinguishing the rich from the poor, schools that don’t require uniforms have a huge contrast between the rich and the poor. Usually, the higher social classes wear the expensive, designer clothing while the lower...

...The Walking Dead In the TV series “The Walking Dead” is about a group of people trying to survive in a war between them and the zombies. In the few episodes we’ve watched, we analyzed how they interacted and what are the strategies they've done to save their lives. Now, if this happens in real life, how we’re going to react in this situation? What are going to be our decision if one of our loved ones got bitten by a walker? How does this situation will affect our lives? This paper will explain how the characters act around other people and the way they respond to the others which are social interaction. While, social structure is the framework of society. In this show, we’ve seen a lot of examples of social structure and interaction for each of the characters. Some of it is the master statuses, status symbols, role conflict, and role exit. First of all is the role conflict occurs when an individual is experiencing a dispute between two or more characters that involves because of the incapability: example, in episode two, when T-dog was torn between saving Merle and himself. At first, he tried to go back to save Merle, but he accidentally dropped the handcuff key into the drain. Merle thought he did it on purpose, but T-dog didn’t have a chance to save him, so he left Merle on the rooftop, but before he leaves, T-dog put a big chain then padlocked it. Made sure that the walkers wouldn't come in. In this case, T-dog doesn't have a choice. If he didn't leave Merle both...
