...Omar Khayyam Omar Khayyam Omar Khayyam was one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. He was acknowledged as the author of the most important treatise on algebra before modern times. This is reflected in his Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra giving a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle. His significance as a philosopher and teacher, and his few remaining philosophical works, has not received the same attention as his scientific and poetic writings. Early life and Career: Omar Khayyam was born on the 18th of May, 1048 in Iran. Omar Khayyam’s full name was Ghiyath al-Din Abu’l-Fath Umar Ibn Ibrahim Al-Nisaburi al-Khayyami. He was born into a family of tent makers. He spent part of his childhood in the town of Balkh, northern Afghanistan, studying under Sheik Muhammad Mansuri. Later on, he studied under Imam Mowaffaq Nishapuri, who was considered one of the greatest teachers of the Khorassan region. Khayyam had notable works in geometry, particularly on the theory of proportions. He was a Persian polymath, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, physician, and poet. He wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, and music. The treatise of Khayyam can be considered as the first treatment of parallels axiom which is not based on petition principle but on more intuitive postulate. Khayyam refutes the previous attempts by other Greek and Persian mathematicians to prove the proposition...

...Master of Scientific Management Frederick W. Taylor: Frederick Winslow Taylor is a controversial figure in management history. His innovations in industrial engineering, particularly in time and motion studies, paid off in dramatic improvements in productivity. At the same time, he has been credited with destroying the soul of work, of dehumanizing factories, making men into automatons. What is Taylor's real legacy? I'm not sure that management historians will ever agree. Under Taylor's management system, factories are managed through scientific methods rather than by use of the empirical "rule of thumb" so widely prevalent in the days of the late nineteenth century when F. W. Taylor devised his system and published "Scientific Management" in 1911. The main elements of the Scientific Management are [1] "Time studies Functional or specialized supervision Standardization of tools and implements Standardization of work methods Separate Planning function Management by exception principle The use of "slide-rules and similar time-saving devices" Instruction cards for workmen Task allocation and large bonus for successful performance The use of the 'differential rate' Mnemonic systems for classifying products and implements A routing system A modern costing system etc. etc. " Taylor called these elements "merely the elements or details of the mechanisms of management" He saw them as extensions of the four principles of management.[2] 1. The development of a true...

...Economics IAs 1st one – Like always, first start off by explaining the article and repeating the most important aspects. You should also cite the article if you have the possibility. In this case just repeat, “ Spanish unemployment has hit record high” and stuff. Then go into explaining how the unemployment is cyclical unemployment. Because the state is “in debt”, that state of the economy caused greater availability of workers than there are jobs for workers. You can show the typical cyclical unemployment diagram and just explain it to the situation. Then because you have to talk about the effect of the unemployment, I would talk about the decrease in retail sales. It is the easiest one and still good to explain. Because of the unemployment and people’s incomes decreased r they have no fixed income, they will not be willing to go out and buy more stuff so the demand for products (usually luxury goods) will decrease because you only demand them when you have a higher income. So because of the cyclical unemployment, the demand of retail prices decreased as well (“Spanish retail sales were down 3.7%”). You can make your second diagram showing that it’s really easy. The entire Keynesian theory is based on the fact that unemployment results from insufficient effective demand for goods and services in an economy. So because of the lack of demand, the unemployment will also be pulled down (but just from the Keynesian theory! Not the new classical. If you don’t know much about...

...The invasion of D-Day The invasion of D-Day was a very important battle during World War II. It was the battle in which the Allies landed on German-controlled beaches in an attempt to gain the upper hand on Hitler and the Axis powers. For me, I learned about the Axis and Allies through playing old WWII video games a s a kid, but not many people actually know what these two words mean or consist of. The Axis powers were the bad guys and consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Oddly enough, Italy switched over to the Allied powers later in the war. The Allies were the supporters of the U.S., the good guys. They consisted of Poland, Britain, and Russia, formerly known as the USSR. The United States was also a part of the Allies but they didn’t join into the fighting until later in the war. A big portion of the credit of the victory on D-Day has to go to the 101st airborne division. They parachuted in and fought from behind enemy lines to flank the Germans from the rear. They had a huge impact on this very crucial battle. D-Day was the beginning of many Allied victories that led to the end of Hitler’s reign. The 101st airborne were a very big asset to the Allies. They were an elite force of skilled paratroopers that were the best of their kind. These highly trained killers were dropped in during the invasion. They actually had a lot of miscommunications on the landing zones and drop sites for these men because of the poor weather conditions. They had planned the invasion to...

...Patton Analysis In the film Patton, many events and important people were depicted, including the battle of the bulge, Sicily, France, General George Patton, Erwin Rommel, Omar Bradley, and Bernard Law Montgomery. General Patton was commander of the Third Army in which he led them ti victory after a crushing defeat in the Battle of Kasserines pass. Erwin Rommel was general of the German army and he was widely respected for his ability to lead. Omar Bradley was second in command to General Patton and was head of the operation in North Africa. Montgomery was general of the British army and at this time he was winning every battle he got into. All of these people were important during world war 2 because they all led an army into battle and were victorious throughout the war and because they all were highly thought of and respected. Sicily and France were both places in which Patton led the Third Army and took then from the Germans. The battle of the bulge was a German offensive in which rot hope was to split up and surround the British and American forces. The directors purpose of masking this film was to inform people of general Patton's accomplishments while he was commanding the American Army. It was to show the war through the life of George Patton and to show how Patton changed the course of the war by actually disciplining the US Army. This movie shows the theme that discipline is the key to winning a war because without discipline, no one will know what to do and...

...Midterm Paper: Love and Basketball The main characters in this 2000 American romantic drama film are Sanaa Lathan as Monica Wright and Omar Epps as Quincy McCall. The movie started as a Quincy and his friends playing basketball and Monica asked to play, but when they realized she was a girl they began telling her what she can and cannot do, basket isn’t a sport for girls through reflected appraisals. Quincy was shocked that a girl could love basketball and even more shock that she played so well. Quincy and Monica begin small talk when his mother went over to meet her new neighbors and they had so much in common both loved basketball and has dreams of playing in the NBA. From that conversation, they used social comparison to see who is better than the other but Monica proved to him she can do everything he can do. Monica’s self perception was that she was ugly compared to her sister and didn’t do normal things girls would do. She faced criticism from her mother about her boyish ways, never wearing a dress and earrings, and always playing basketball. Quincy attractiveness landed him all the attention from girls at his school, at his games all eyes were on him and every girl wanted to be his girlfriend. President Carter, wanting to nurture goodwill in South America, continued negotiations and finalized two treaties based on the 1967 theory. The Canal Treaty prescribed twenty-two years for control to gradually pass to Panama. The Neutrality Treaty required Panama to keep the canal open and accessible. A "statement of understanding" permitted the U.S. to defend the canal "against any aggression or threat" but not to intervene in Panama's domestic affairs. In September 1977, the signing ceremony with Panama's ruler, Colonel Omar Torrijos Herrera, was held in the presence of Western Hemisphere leaders. Approval in...

...Book review Confessions of an Economic Hit Man John Perkins’s book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man left an unforgettable impression. As Perkins says himself it is a confession. A confession of a greedy man, a man who allowed himself to be an economic hit man, a man who took advantage of that he was born in one of the wealthiest societies in the world. Perkins shares his knowledge about how one country wants to control the wealth of the whole world, corporatocracy. What he shows is that in developing countries there is a huge gap between rich and poor, usually only one family controls the most of the wealth in the country. United States provide loans ‘for development’ through organizations like The World Bank and USAID. By those loans they create a vision that they help poor people to get jobs and to have a better life, but in reality only wealthy people get the benefits. Country can’t cope with the loan and therefore becomes obligated to United States. Perkins describes his life as an economic hit man, his work in MAIN. He was MAIN’s economic hit man, provided economic forecasts in favor for the loan. Perkins also describes how he stopped taking part in making less developed countries obligated to United States. Perkins begun writing the book in 1980, but threats and bribes always convinced him to stop. Even though, the book was finally published in 2004. I believe it takes a lot of courage to write a book like that despite everything. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man...

...He graduated in 1962 with a degree in engineering. For the next few years, Noriega trained obstinately at the U.S. Army School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia becoming highly decorated in intelligence, counterintelligence, and jungle operations and then went on to take a course in psychological operations (Psyops) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1967, Noriega returned to Panama and joined the Panama National Guard. One year later, he was promoted to lieutenant. That same year, the leader of Panama, Amulfo Arias was removed from power by the military a short 11 days after winning his second election. Many speculate Noriega played a major part of this military uprising. Control of government power was assumed by Colonel Omar Torrijos. Torrijos already had a great deal of respect for Noriega but one incident sealed the deal. In 1969, Torrijos was out of the country, a group of guerillas tried to seize control of the capital. Torrijos needed to get back into the country quickly and safely. Noriega planned for Torrijos plane to land on a runway with no lights. Noriega got cars to line up along the dark runway and turn their lights on so the plane could land discreetly yet safely. Torrijo landed and with the help of Noriega’s troupes, Torrijo effortlessly reclaimed...

...General George C. Marshall I selected General George C. Marshall for my leadership and management paper. Born George Catlett Marshall, December 31, 1880 in Pennsylvania, he was both a military leader and a diplomat. Regarded as one of the principal architects of America’s defeat of both Germany and Japan during World War II; I will define the ways in which he was a leader and manager. The leadership roles he had and their similarities. The obstacles he had to overcome and whether or not he was effective. How He Was a Leader and Manager General Marshall was one of a rare breed of people who are successful in all they do. While we all know people who are successful in one thing or another, seldom do we see someone who consistently are effective in such a broad range of jobs. If you look at General Marshall’s career, regardless of the challenge given him, his leadership and management was guided consistently by a set of never-changing principles. “His traits of honesty and candor gained the trust of millions of Americans and the respect of world leaders during his 50 years of selfless service” ("About George Marshall", 2009). He managed people, programs, and materials during both a time when the world was at war or during peace time. He strove to do the right thing in everything he did and quickly became a master of any situation. He earned the undying loyalty of those who either served him or served with him. ...Both Generals Omar Bradley and George Patton were undoubtedly great battlefield commanders. While they both came from different backgrounds they both were intelligent men. Patton was born to a military family in California and Bradley was the son of a schoolteacher in Missouri. They were both graduates of West Point. One thing that I found interesting was the fact that in Africa, Bradley served under Patton and in Europe Patton served under Bradley. Bradley stated that Patton was a soldier first and the greatest example of this was even though Patton was his superior in service by six years, he never questioned the decision for Bradley to be his superior in the 12th Army Group. Patton was often outspoken and seemed to receive criticism for some of his comments and actions, including the all famous slapping incident. However, it is of note that happened on his way to Bradley’s Headquarters and when Bradley heard about the incident from Patton he felt that he would have done the same thing. Patton was said to have been a “glory hound” and quick to anger to the point that he would often overstep his bounds when it came to disciplining troops. Bradley was more of the calm and collected type personality, and is commonly referred to as the GIs General. There is an instance that Bradley was observed refusing the help of his Aide and smoothing out the ground with an entrenching tool for his bed. He expected his subordinates to get the job done and was quick to replace those...
