OMG GMO The article from the biology news website is about bananas; genetically modified bananas to be specific. The bananas will be used in human trails to see their effects on us. Biology news.net claims that this is the first time such a trial will be conducted on humans. The reason why this trail is being conducted is to nourish, lift the wellbeing and health of millions of east Africans. In east Africa the banana is a staple of their cuisine, unfortunately the banana lacks the micronutrient vitamin A and iron. As distinguished professor James Dale, leader of the Queensland University of Technology project puts it “The consequences of vitamin A deficiency are dire with 650,000-700,000 children world-wide dying from pro-vitamin A deficiency each year and at least another 300,000 going blind.” It seems Professor Dale is doing his part to end world hunger. These bananas which have been planted in Australia will be shipped to the U.S. for the first human trail. The bananas look just like any other banana from the outside but inside they are orange because of all the vitamin A . There are already test fields being planted in Uganda after DR. Dale claims that “"Hundreds of different permutations went into field trials up north and we tested everything to make sure our science worked here in Queensland. Now the really high-performing genes have been taken to Uganda and have been put into field trials there." The bananas that are high performing will then be planted in several locations and the hope is to get these bananas planted in surrounding counties to feed generations. From reading this article one can take away that genetically modified food is a great thing and that feeding millions over generations is a fantastic thing. It seems as though we as a human race are one step closer to ending world hunger and improving overall quality of

Introduction Food is a huge part of our daily routine - most people eat at least three meals a day and think about what they are going to eat the rest of the day. The saying - We are what we eat; transforms genetically modified food into an unknown threat to our health in the case of GM food. The result is that when our source of nutrition is modified - controversies arise. This becomes apparent when investigating the GM-food debate; a controversial issue that has attracted attention in both media and public opinion.[footnoteRef:1] [1: Genetically Modified, because of rapid developments within the biotechnology-industry such as the CRIPSR-Cas9 system, GMOs are making major scientific advancements. ] One way of obtaining information about GM-food is by watching documentaries. They are presumed to be unbiased and truthful, a reliable source of information on the subject. However, the content of a documentary is generally chosen in order to make the message it wants to convey most convincing. The success of a documentary in conveying the message is determined by how credible it is perceived to be. According to Spence et al. in Crafting...

Argumentative Essay: Genetically Modified What?

...GMO: Genetically Modified What? When you spot a food item that is labeled a “GMO”, do you know what that means? There are many people who don’t know what the abbreviated term means or even what it is, but simply it stands for “genetically modified organism”, in this case: genetically modified food. This means that much of the food consumed regularly has been altered in some way over the course of time. Essentially, it is not made from the earth; it is not classified natural. According to writer Yelena Sukhoterina, “In 38 countries, GM crops are banned on the government level, with the backing of the country’s scientists, doctors, and environmental agencies” (Sukhoterina). However, out of those countries, the United States is not one of them. Currently speaking, there are few select states that are fighting against the big GMO seed corporations, specifically they are fighting to have food labeled whether it is or isn’t GMO free. Today there is a massive controversy with GMOs and whether or not they are beneficial to our health. Although some are ignorant to believe that food is...

...(Hemphill, Syagnik). In the event that you have never addressed where the nourishment you expend regularly originates from, the time has come to begin addressing. A hereditarily adjusted living being is another adaptation of a plant or creature that is made by modifying qualities utilizing biotechnology ("What Is a GMO?"). Today, more than 40 sorts of plants have been hereditarily changed and available to purchase (Network). An astounding 90% of Canola, 88% of Corn and 94% of soy are GM ("What Is a GMO?"). The FDA asserts that GMO's are nothing to stress over, and that it is alive and well to expend sustenance that is falsely made. From their point of view, GM plants are generally as protected and tried the same as customarily reproduced plants...

Gmo's- a General Overlook

...implementing specific genes from any sort of organism occurring into several public concerns. The major ethical dilemmas and claims by many GMOs’ protesters is that a small handful of companies are re designing the world’s entire food supply by distributing and substituting natural seeds with hybrid ones full of pesticides that can be harmful to humans. One simple example to explain the ethical catches arising with genetically engineered products is to be found when two years ago after a massive earthquake struck on the island of Haiti was followed by Monsanto’s (one of the major GMOs manufacturers) donation of 475 tons of different hybrid seeds mainly of corn and tomatoes. Haitian farmers and peasants promptly responded that such seeds would be burned if entered the Haitian ground. (Bell, 2010) The multiple concerns on the environment and humanity of genetically engineered foods can be summed up in three main, crucial points. First, in order to produce such products, the seeds used are bombed with toxic chemicals that agricultural workers must wear special protective clothing when handling them. Second but foremost, the testing on GMOs has not yet given enough safety assurance for the possible negative effects on humans and agricultural environment. As of today, only 1% of USDA biotech research money goes to risk assessment (Ackerman, 2002), and no GMO product is labeled where four single companies (Syngenta, Dupont, Bayer and Monsanto) own half of the world’s seed. (Bell, 2010) Third...
